This is the kind of thing people keep sending me. Whoever is responsible for them knows what they're doing because I know flesh and blood people that are making decisions based on this nonsense.

The latest example:

Jesus. My brain turned off after the second "LIAR", and it reads like it was typed by a five-year old. I was waiting for "PANTS ON FIRE", which did not deliver. Goddamn you, Bateman.

I want everyone to feel my pain:

Dear Friend,

What does it take to be the most liberal member of the United States Senate – farther left than Ted Kennedy, John Kerry or even Hillary Clinton? For the answer, take a look at a man who could be the next president of the United States : Barack Obama.

Sen. Obama was recently named the most liberal U.S. Senator, based on the annual voting analysis by the non-partisan and highly respected National Journal. If he emerges as the Democratic nominee, one of the critical jobs of Focus Action will be to uncover the real Barack Obama—not the feel-good orator who speaks of “change” and “hope,” but the man who would be the most left-wing president in our nation’s history. And we’ll need your continued help to do so.

Obama: As extreme as they come on family issues
On abortion, Obama’s 100 percent lifetime voting record from Planned Parenthood and NARAL only begins to tell the story.

* While in the Illinois State Senate six years ago, Obama was the only senator to speak against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which protects babies who are born alive after a failed abortion. In other words, it prevents flat-out infanticide. A year later— while the U.S. Senate was passing Born Alive 98-0 – state Sen. Obama quietly killed an identical bill in the state committee he chaired!
* Not surprisingly, then, he also opposes the ban on partial-birth abortion and supports allowing minor girls to be transported across state lines for abortions without parental notice or consent.
* Perhaps most chilling is his avowed support for the Freedom of Choice Act, which, if signed into law, would threaten every pro-life law passed at the state and federal levels over the past 30 years.

* In addition, while the next president could effectively overturn Roe v. Wade with the right Supreme Court appointments, Obama is proudly committed to appointing judges who will uphold legal abortion. In fact, his judicial philosophy is typical of the radical left. He believes that judges can change the meaning of the Constitution at their discretion. Not surprisingly, he voted against the nominations of Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

How about marriage and the homosexual agenda?

* First, he opposes the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). If given the chance by the liberal Congress, Obama will overturn DOMA, potentially forcing every state to recognize homosexual “marriages” and guaranteeing that you and I pay federal benefits to support homosexual couples. Please note: Technically, he says he is “opposed” to same-sex “marriage,” but by standing against DOMA, he is standing against the only thing that prevents same-sex marriages from spreading state to state.
* Second, he has pledged to homosexual leaders that he will sign the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (forcing businesses to defend themselves against discrimination lawsuits should they not hire a particular candidate who then announces he or she is homosexual or transsexual). He also supports hate-crimes expansion (potentially putting churches at risk if they preach the truth about homosexuality).
* Then there’s his support for teaching schoolchildren (in 2nd grade, no less) about

homosexual relationships. He also wants to require women to register for the draft. And, as a state senator, he even refused to support a measure to stop sex businesses from opening near schools or places of worship!

The price of “change”: Hold on to your wallet!
Sen. Obama talks constantly about the need for “change.” But what he doesn’t tell you is the price tag, so allow me: It will be very expensive change.

He supports raising taxes to pay for universal health care, his free college program and a host of other government expansions. Among his pet projects is a bill he sponsored called the Global Poverty Act, which would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid. Over 13 years, that will amount to a whopping $845 billion increase over current foreign-aid spending! Get your checkbooks ready!

National security?
One area where Sen. Obama seems to have an aversion to spending is the War on Terror. But it’s not just the admittedly controversial war in Iraq where Obama has shown himself to be soft on terror:

* He has repeatedly voted against funding our troops in Iraq —unless the funding included a date certain by which our soldiers must withdraw from their fight against al Qaeda. Even with the troop surge producing superb results, Obama has called both the surge and the war a failure. In fact, he and Hillary seem to be in a rhetorical contest to see who can abandon the battlefield first.
* He, along with Hillary, voted to give captured terrorists and illegal immigrants constitutional rights that are reserved for American citizens. Can you believe that Sen. Obama actually favors granting citizenship to illegal immigrants convicted of crimes against children, aggravated felonies and other serious crimes? It's true.
* Perhaps, then, it should come as no surprise that Obama also voted against a resolution proposing a constitutional amendment to protect the American flag from desecration.

One has to ask: Did he learn anything from 9/11?

Ditto for Hillary?
On most of the issues I’ve mentioned, Hillary isn’t far behind Obama’s extremism. In fact, she ranked as the 16th most liberal senator in National Journal’s scoring. But the reality is that most people know about Hillary. They remember her push for government-run health care. They know of her radical pro-abortion stance. They may even recall her support for allowing young children to sue their parents.

Obama, though, is the new kid on the block. In fact, a little more than three years ago, he was still an Illinois state senator. Now, the media is fawning over him … and isn’t about to delve into his leftist record.

That’s why Focus Action—with your help—needs to sound the alarm. Whoever the Democrat nominee is, the truth about their stands needs to be told in clear, bold colors. And, of course, the pros and cons of the Republican candidate need to be laid out as well.

Focus Action is blessed to have some great channels to communicate the truth to the American public. From radio programs to mailings to webcasts to advertisements of all sorts, we have the vehicles to get the word out. But your gifts are needed to provide the fuel to make those vehicles run—so we can inform millions of voters, not just in the presidential race, but in the critical contests for House and Senate as well. If you haven't done so recently, please consider making a donation by clicking here.

Throughout our history, great Americans have stood up to grave challenges of all sorts. As this latest wave of secular liberalism threatens us, I look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with you in prayer and action – in defense of the family.

These attacks on Obama are despicable. It makes it really tough on people like me who are easily swayed by anything we hear no matter the source. I still can't believe he's in favor of gay polygamy.
Old, yes, but I got this yesterday. I will add to the pain.

-----------------------------

This was emailed to me....interesting how people perceive Barack Obama....

Barack Hussein Obama
The Bible has warned us that 'A man will come from the East that will be
charismatic in nature and have proposed solutions for all our problems and
his rhetoric will attract many supporters!'

When will our pathetic Nation quit turning their back on God and understand
that this man is 'A Muslim'....First, Last and always....and we are AT WAR
with the Muslim Nation, whether our bleeding-heart, secular, Liberal friends
believe it or not.

This man fits every description from the Bible of the 'Anti-Christ'!
I'm just glad to know that there are others that are frightened by this man!

Who is Barack Obama?

Very interesting and something that should be considered in your choice.

If you do not ever forward anything else, please forward this to all your
contacts...this is very scary to think of what lies ahead of us here in our
own United States...better heed this and pray about it and share it.

Who is Barack Obama?

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in
Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from
Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas.

Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii.

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced.

His father returned to Kenya.

His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from
Indonesia.

When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia.
Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta.
He also spent two years in a Catholic school.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim.
He is quick to point out that, 'He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school.

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that that he is not a radical.

Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best.

In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and
never again had any direct influence over his son's education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam.
Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta.

Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world.

Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background.

ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.

Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any reverence for our flag.

While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama does not. Just look on you tube.

Do you want someone like this as your PRESIDENT?

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy and find out everything we can about this man before he's elected.

The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States, one of their own!

Would you want this man leading our country?...... NOT ME

Please forward to everyone you know.

O.k.
Now for me as an European to say that is strange would be an understatement. Since we have elections and democracy and all that stuff too, I thought I knew the basic rules. But I have never ever gotten an Email like this about any political figure here, or even in Europe as a whole. Maybe the Internets haven´t been discovered as a ground for political sniping yet here.
But it sure looks like every US Chewer had got one at least in recent times. What I can´t fanthom though is the fact that this has any impact at all. Who would even give a damn about a random Email, especially if it is related to something not so meaningless like politics. If this makes the impact you guys seem to indicate, you should have about 25 Million Nigerian Scam Millionairs. At the end of the day I am just disgusted by the sheer lunacy of lies, venom and hatred that spewed there. But people falling for this propaganda on a level that would make Goebbels spin in his grave out of embarrasment is something beyond me.
Fuck. I love the States. But could your citizens please stop making me such a hard time arguing with people about the greatness of the states? I am seriously running out of arguments regarding recent politics.

I make it a point to ignore all e-mail forwards.

That being said, Bateman, you should totally respond with e-mail chain letters that tell people that if they don't send the e-mail to fifty of their friends, then they and everyone they ever loved with die of rectal cancer.

This allows me to tell my Election '08 story:

I don't know how it happened, but I got myself on a Hilary for President mailing list -- maybe from some related issue in '04 or '05, when I was living in New York. I joined a bunch of Obama list serves the day he announced, and can't be arsed to de-join any of them. The point is that for the last several month, the war for the Democratic nomination has been fought in my inbox.

More letters like those and the kinds of people who write them will get the government they deserve. Sorry about the rest of you guys.

I recall all the b.s. emails that were floating around after 9/11 and could have pretty much crafted a form letter of " <insert debunking link here> This email is complete and utter bullshit put together by some pathetic, attention starved fuckwit. Why are you forwarding his lies?"

The people sending me said emails inexplicably took offense to my replies. On the plus side, I DID start getting a lot fewer of them.

I only got a dozen forwards this year because I typed something similar to the following message:

Dear friends, family, and acquaintances,

Please stop sending me forwards. I know this sounds mean, but I don't care if Bill Gates is going to give me a million dollars. I don't care if you found out that a presidential candidate had sex with boys when he was a child. I don't care if my favorite brand of chili is going to make me go blind. Stop forwarding me bullshit. Please.

Love,

Yes, because nothing keeps people closer than mass emails typed by someone the forwarder doesn't even know. It's like the family camping trip of the 21st century.

They may be spread by individuals but they're planted. I hope he can stay above the fray through all of this. It's obvious the entrenched interests are terrified of him, and he has a lot of flash points the Roves of the world can stoke to get regular people's panties all in a twist, i.e. mixed race, "librul," etc. What Bush and Republican neoliberalist free trade, pro-big-business policies have created is the kind of atmosphere in this country where people are just looking for someone to demonize and not informed enough to realize how they're being conned and used.

There's no way that someone dumb enough to believe that is patient enough to read the whole thing. I guess the length is just to look impressive.

I work with a fairly smart guy who refused to vote for Obama because he got the email Jake mentioned. I pointed him to this Snopes page, but I still think he believes it. I don't understand the blind devotion to the GOP that some people in this country have. I stopped believing all that Republican bullshit when I was 16. I try not to believe the Democrat bullshit either, but that's harder to see through than some of this crap. It's amazing how many people want to believe their particular form of bullshit instead of looking for the truth, and some just refuse to debunk this stuff with a simple fact check. If I wasn't part of this country, I'd say let these people have the government they deserve, but I don't want to be punished for these people's idiocy.

Work, sadly. And I'm in fucking Los Angeles, where most open neo-conservatives are Botoxed to death. I changed my last e-mail address when I moved from Texas because I didn't want to deal with the wacky political e-mails from crazy distant family members.

I try, but these seem to be waaaay more prevalent this year. I know it's an election year, etc., but the amount of them really seems to have risen, and they're mostly anti-Obama with a handful of snarky misogynistic shit slung at Hillary.

I initially wanted to disagree with this, but I gave it a little more thought (at least wrt Dawkins' "meme" theory and the anonymity of the innernets) and it makes sense. Even if the e-mail itself isn't "planted" per se, the misinformation exists and it's not like there's a shortage of smug motherfuckers who would love to cobble crap like this together to look like an intellectual giant amongst their retard peers. And this does apply to both sides of the aisle, though I have noticed many, many more right-wing e-mails to this effect than left-wing e-mails.

Now someone's going to get all butt-hurt and tell me that I'm wrong and that it's an equal effort on behalf of both parties, and that I shouldn't stereotype. Fuck it.

You'd be surprised. The aforementioned "distant family members" in my post admitted to hating reading and books, but they'd sit there for ten minutes to plow through the latest far-right bible-thumping conspiracy theory e-mail so that they would have the privilege of telling me, my friends, and my few other like-minded relatives more reasons why we were going to hell.

Same relative once told me during a get-together that I was going to hell because I was dating a black girl.

Who I had brought to the party and was standing five feet away.

And this post. All of it. I'm not trying to say that the partisanship shit only exists on the Republican side, but there are a marked number of people who, as soon as someone says "Lower taxes! It's the taxes! Taxes are KILLING US and RAPING YOUR CHILDREN", they all howl and holler and start gnashing their teeth and defending the same politicians until their last breath while bitching about politicians being untrustworthy liars, ha ha. It's unbelievable.

These kinds of campaigns take money and those with the most resources and the most profits at stake through public perception are much more inclined to pay for these kinds of services. Even though Obama's not as threatening to these industries and establishment politicians as an Edwards or Kucinich, he is still much more dangerous to them than Hillary or McCain. Therefore there's a lot of money at stake and most likely a lot of money being spent to assassinate his character using any means possible - be it network "reporters" asking questions like "Does Rev. Wright love America as much as you do" or indidious "anonymous" emails that look grassroots but aren't.

ps. I don't see how there could be a lot of left-wing planting since the left is not herded around entrenched financial interests like the extreme right is. It's also not as well-oiled when it comes to farming niches and hate groups as the right.

I hope what I was trying to say came through all right. It was 5:30 this morning and I was tired as hell. I was trying to say that I'm sure "the left does it tooooo", but nowhere near as much as the right. Maybe it's just the people I work with (aerospace industry), but it seems like at least once a week I hear somebody ramble on about Obama being a Muslim, etc. I'm getting kind of sick of it. And these are people who are very smart with regards to technical stuff. I don't see how they can be so smart in one respect, and borderline retarded in another.

I certainly wasn't trying to say the left is just as guilty, if that was what frustrated you Jake.

I'm shamed to say that this has happened over here as well. During the 2004 elections, someone (possibly the church, although it hasn't been proven) tried to mass mail leaflets claiming that the liberal candidate was an atheist and would betray the country if elected.

Nope, I got what you said and wasn't frustrated by it. No worries.

Wait...

Maybe you should try getting more comical political forwards. This is the only type of political forwards I get and 98% of the time, it's from my Mom in Vegas.

Subj: Fwd: Fw: Income tax rebate..

The federal government is sending us a $600 rebate to stimulate the economy.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.
If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs,
if we purchase a computer it will go to India,
if we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala,
if we purchase a good car it will go to Japan,
if we purchase useless junk it will go to Taiwan...

.... and none of this will help the American economy.

The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy beer and bourbon,
since these are the only products that are still produced in the US.
Please be a responsible American and do your part to stimulate our economy.

At least that one is largely true. But it left out what a lot of people will do with their "economic stimulus checks" - hand it over to the banking industry to pay their credit card debt, thereby once again redistributing public money back to the incompetent and greedy overlords in the financial industry (since they multi million dollar federal bail-outs barely cover the massive CEO severance packages).

I look forward to the day when the Conservatives try to win my vote by labeling their opponents atheists.

ps. I don't see how there could be a lot of left-wing planting since the left is not herded around entrenched financial interests like the extreme right is. It's also not as well-oiled when it comes to farming niches and hate groups as the right.
It doesn't take a lot of resources to write and forward an email.

jvc, while that's true, that's not how these things are conjured (though that's how you're intended to take them).

How much compensation befits the chief executive who delivered the most profitable year ever for a U.S. company?

For the Exxon Mobil Corp. board of directors, the answer was a $16.7 million compensation package for Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson, up 28.6% from a year earlier.

But the Exxon board didn't increase the amount of restricted stock it awarded Mr. Tillerson. And it stopped reimbursing all top executives for their country-club memberships. source

Pause a moment, reflect back.
These events are actual events from history.
They really happened!!!

Do you remember?

1. 1968 Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed by:
Muslim male extremist between the ages of 17 and 40.

2. In 1972 at the Munich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and massacred by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

3. In 1979, the US embassy in Iran was taken over by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

4. During the 1980’s a number of Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

5. In 1983, the US Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

6. In 1985 the cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked and a 70 year old American passenger was murdered and thrown overboard in his wheelchair by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

7. In 1985 TWA flight 847 was hijacked at Athens, and a US Navy diver trying to rescue passengers was murdered by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

8. In 1988 , Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

9. In 1993 the World Trade Center was bombed the first time by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

10. In 1998, the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

11. On 9/11/01, four airliners were hijacked; two were used as missiles to take down the World Trade Centers and of the remaining two, one crashed into the US Pentagon and the other was diverted and crashed by the passengers. Thousands of people were killed by:
Muslim male extremists between the of 17 and 40.

12. In 2002 the United States fought a war in Afghanistan against:
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

13. In 2002 reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered by-- you guessed it--
Muslim male extremists between the ages of 17 and 40.

No, I really don’t see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you?
So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people...
Absolutely No Profiling!

They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President’s security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winner and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling.

According to The Book of Revelation:
The Anti-Christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, he will destroy everything.

And Now:
For the award winning Act of Stupidity Of all times the People of America want to elect, to the most Powerful position on the face of the Planet -- The Presidency of the United states of America

A Muslim Male Extremist Between the ages of 17 and 40.

Have the American People completely lost their Minds, or just their Power of Reason??? I’m sorry but I refuse to take a chance on the ’unknown’ candidate. Let’s send this to as many people as we can so that the Gloria Aldreds and other stupid attorneys along with Federal Justices that want to thwart common sense, feel ashamed of themselves -- if they have any such sense.
As the writer of the award winning story ’Forrest Gump’ so aptly put it,
'Stupid Is As Stupid Does.’

Also, NOT A MUSLIM.

And, uh, I'm pretty sure Sirhan Sirhan wasn't a Muslim either. I didn't bother to read much further.

nevermind.

Did Forrest Gump, the book, really win any awards? Why?

I usually don't get political emails, mostly horrible joke emails. No one should ever use a Powerpoint to tell a joke. They all come from my aunt, who gets pissed off when we make fun of her stupid chain mail. Last week, she sent us an endless list "you might be from Pittsburgh if..." jokes. I replied to all (the rest of the family) asking what Larry the Cable Guy's take on the subject was, and I got crucified by anyone with gray pubes. Now any snide responses are circulated around family members of my generation.

In short, I don't think I've ever come across an intelligent chain mail. Usually, they're called news articles.

Ha! That one about "Muslim male extremists," minus the Obama references, was posted on these boards by Devin's friend Will years ago.
Yes, I thought I recognized his foul stench when it was posted on board.
