Scott Pilgrim - Page 9

It seems obvious now, but still really clever. Blacked out text below

You can see hints of it all the way back in volume four. What seemed like a Knives-Neil-Stephen love triangle didn't actually exist. Julie is extra bitchy the whole book towards Knives, thinking that Stephen had something going on with her (this is the volume he meets Joseph, so in theory they could have already been fooling around at that point.) There's a conversation near the end of the volume where Julie apologizes to Stephen and says she realizes that she shouldn't worry about someone like Knives. Stephen agrees but looks nervous. Also interesting to note is that in that scene Joseph is sitting next to Stills.

After reading volume six, it puts the exchange in a completely different context.

Great finale to the series that really did a great job of wrapping everything up. The wait between volumes was always excruciating but MAN it was always worth it. Vol. 6 has some of the best art O'Malley's ever done and it's fitting since it's the end of Scott & Ramona's story. I really enjoyed this and I'll be going back to it every couple of months I'm sure.

(CLOSURE!)

Yeah, I recognized maybe 4 or 5 moments in volume 6 that were in the movie.

I read this on a bus on the way to a flight for SDCC while listening to the Inception soundtrack.

Just typing it sounds wrong, but actually experiencing the last book with that music felt oddly right. Characters dreaming, engaging in fantasy action, and getting closure. The action music timed pretty perfectly with the fights too.

I'm a little bummed that it's over though.

This, though, this is just lazy.

Guys, I need some help here.

First, let me say that I haven't read through the entirety of this thread since Vol. 6 was released, so I apologize if I'm asking something that's already been touched upon. I don't want to spoil anything for myself, though.

Minor Spoilers...

Okay, so, question: During his wildernes sabbatical, what exactly does Scott realize during his battle with NegaScott?!? I'm not trying to be obtuse, but O'Malley's art confused me. Did Scott realize that he had cheated on Ramona with--it looks vaguely like--Lisa Miller? WHAT did he remember?!?

Help! And, if it's clarified later in the book, just tell me to keep reading. Thanks.

In the flashback, Scott realizes he never told Kim he was leaving; he actually only told Lisa. We see the way he remembered it in the top panel, and the way it happened in the bottom panel. It took me a couple reads to figure it out too.

As for the battle with Nega-Scott, I think it's him realizing he needs to accept and recognize the bad parts of himself in order to be a better person. Nega-Scott then merges into him.

Again, minor spoilers...

Yeah, no, weirdly, I understood that right away. But that sequence (as well as seeing what actually went down with Simon Lee)--which led into a series of flashes of Ramona throughout the volumes--made me think that the person who rolled over in bed wasn't Ramona (as we originally saw in Volume 5), but someone else... like Lisa Miller. Eh, I'm probably just over-thinking things. Thanks, though.

Yeah, makes perfect sense. There's a definite "Eternal Sunshine" thing going on there. Scott chooses to forget the past and rewrite it to suit his needs. As a consequence, he never learns and never changes.
I think the key thing is that Scott's bad memory is him deliberately forgetting the bad stuff he's done in the past, thus allowing him to continue thinking of himself as a naive but purely good-hearted guy. I guess you could say Nega-Scott is literally all those bad parts of his personality that he's isolated and which have taken on his form, which is why he/it merges with Scott and he suddenly remembers everything.
I took the 'remembering' being him realizing that he'd really been just as bad a boyfriend as Ramona had been a girlfriend.

Exactly the comparison I was thinking of, and that's high praise indeed. Vol 6stuck the landing. It's very telling that I want to know more about all the characters lives after this volume.

I love how it was pretty obvious that Envy Adams got her lips botoxed. I wanted to pop them!!!

Unless you're on death row, what's the hurry?
Yeah, I did this while waiting for the last one to arrive from Amazon. Awesome finale.

Yeah, this is the FF7 reference I didn't really care for, but it wasn't enough to make me dislike the story, especially by that point.

That's what I took from all those pictures of Ramona. Granted, I've only read it once, and that was about an hour ago.

Yep, this might just be my favorite moment of that last book, as it caused me to laugh out loud.

I can't wait for this movie. If nothing else, I want to see what they've changed. It's going to be a long two weeks.

Same here [Especially, Scott's one about he and Envy ("yeah totes.")]

That was my initial reaction, too. The more I think about it, though, the more I like how it was handled. I've always loved Kim, but Vol. 6 has taken it to a new level.

I realize it's pretty silly to look back on ...Gets It Together now and laugh at Stephen's "NUTS" work hat, but I laugh nonetheless.

This is also as good a time as any to point out that I'm not a friend of Scott Pilgrim's.

I really liked the final book. Ramona's back story was long overdue but it felt like it came at the exact right point. Also happy to see Envy Adams come back. One of my favorite things about her is how she changes the dynamic of every character when she's around.

I don't get the complaints that the book focused too much on Scott and Ramona. Short-changing them in the final act would've been a huge mistake.

I unabashedly love this series, which only makes me mad at myself for waiting until the first trailer for the movie showed up to start reading it.
Shake, your original post prompted me to look for advance screening in my area. And there was! 2 days ago... GACK! Damnit...
You know, there's something so delightfully twisted about Gideon cryogenically freezing "the ones that got away" and that he ultimately wanted to add Ramona to that collection. It's a shame that won't be in the movie.

And it also has MY favorite exchange:

"Are those YOUR evil-exes?"
"YES...The answer is no."

Also, isn't the "Value: $7,777,777" ALSO a FF7 reference?
Sigh. The backlash has already begun against the movie (hey, remember when that used to wait until, like, the movie had actually COME OUT?) but it's trickling back to the books as well. I've read far too many internet posters who have written something along the lines of "I read three pages of the comic and it's annoying and precious and obviously only popular because it's got video game references, and Scott is a horrible person and I hate him". It's like they're sweating bullets trying to be cool contrarians. And it really is funny how many of these people (most of whom seem otherwise intelligent) seem to take pride in passing judgment on the comic without having actually read it.

If you live in LA there's an advanced screening at the Landmark on Monday. I grabbed an extra pass if anyone wants it, but you do need to confirm with this screening company ASAP.

Just read all 6 in 2 days. It's a very funny, heart-warming, very very clever and all around thoroughly entertaining little comic book experience no doubt. It made me reflect on how I floated through life and love a decade ago when I was Scotts age and the lessons I had to learn to be emotionally mature.

O'Malley's very gifted. Loved it.

Now bring on Edgars take.

Just finished volume 6. So good. And yes, it was the best of the series.

all the CASUAL SEX attempts made me laugh out loud.

Now to wait a fucking couple of months for the movie.

Scott Pilgrim volumes are now $3.73-$4.49 on Amazon. If you've been thinking of getting these, jump on it.

Thanks for the info, alobek. I have them all, but I'm gonna get all of them for a friend's upcoming birthday.
