Forgotten Rock Bands of the 90's

I've got a lot of CDs from when I was in college of pretty much ONE HIT ROCK WONDERS of the 90's.

Feel free to add to my list of forgotten PAIN.

Ammonia- Mint 400 (You remember that song DRUGS?)
Rusty- FLUKE (Canadian grunge?)
3 lb Thrill- Vulture
Orbit- Libidio Speedway
Face to Face- I admit this self titled is one of my favorite PUNK CDs of the 90's

more to come as I sort through the wreckage of my Cd collection.
no no...I don't remember any of those bands.
Presidents of the United States of America come to mind.

As do My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult, the Cranberries, Chumbawhumba...

And it seems as though Helmet has slipped through the cracks of history at the moment.

I've been watching the NHL playoffs and Unsung by Helmet gets played pretty regularly in the Flyers arena.

Really?

Does that count, given that hockey is kind of the forgotten sport?

All kidding aside, its nice to hear that Paige and the boys are rattling around somewhere. And now you've gotten Unsung stuck in my head.

Gracias, neaux.

Thunder - my favorate band at the time

Skin - another of my favorates.

Strangley they were also both the first bands I ever saw live.

Goldfinger's Self-titled 1996 album. This was actually a neat little ska/rock album.

As I look on Amazon, I see that they just released a new album LAST WEEK? I thought for sure they were dead.

Babylon Zoo. I remember them being fairly big in Europe when I was over there on vacation in early '96 (they were all over MTV Europe). They tried to cross them over to the US with a minor push that summer, but they never took off.

Never heard of them? Don't fret...missing out on the 'greatness' of Babylon Zoo will not haunt you on your deathbed.

Animal Bag...ha! Forgot about them.

Eve 6
Fuel
Marcy Playground
Harvey Danger
Better Than Ezra
Seven Mary Three
Republica
Gruntruck

and Third Eye Blind is on their way...
Elastica.

...and I'd say that Third Eye Blind is there.
Cowboy Mouth

And Poe, even though she's not really "rock".
Swans
Caterwaul
They Eat Their Own
The Sextants
The Primitives
and whatever happened to the Smithereens?

Third Eye Blind played Mardi Gras at Universal Studios, they're not only there, they've moved in and bought new carpet.

Also:

The Soup Dragons
The Spin Doctors
Stereo MCs
Blind Melon
The Verve Pipe
The Verve

It kills me to see Blind Melon mentioned. They deserve better.

as weird as it sounds... My Cousin's husband was the former road manager for Blind Melon!

I worked at a music store at the time that 'Soup' was released. While I hated their first album with a passion, 'Soup' was a great CD that really surprised me. We played that one in-store alot and sold quite a few copies of it.

It's more a Pixies situation (though hopefully one with a better follow-through) than a Soup Dragons one.
I still listen to Blind Melon a lot, and a little Unified Theory.

Other forgotten bands:
Far
Lit
Birdbrain
The Offspring

Edited to add that it's sad to see The Verve and Verve Pipe here too, I like them.

I don't think it should include bands like Blind Melon where the driving force of the band OD'd. I'd also hesitate to include Presidents of the United States in that they did have a song or two that got radio play off their second album and Cleveland Rocks got used for the Drew Carey show theme. It's not like they're The Rembrandts or anything.

I'd potentially add Stabbing Westward and Gravity Kills to the list.

Seriously, this is a great album and the band remains, to this day, relatively well respected. I saw them at the Warp Tour a few years back and they drew a pretty huge crowd.

That's a bizarre comparison to choose. The Rembrandts wrote the Friends theme song, which is arguably much more widely known (and reviled) than the Drew Carey show song.

The Presidents' second album was released in 1996. Even if they had a song or two that got radio play off that disc (and looking at the song list, I've got no clue what those songs were), they've been 'forgotten' by everyone but their hardcore fanbase since the 90s ended.

Sorry it wasn't more clear, that second one was mostly in jest. I'm a Presidents fan myself but I know that they are a quintessential forgotten 90's band. Their two successful CD's and show they did a theme for were all extremely 90's and--while obviously not as 1-hit as The Rembrandts--they are certainly of that era and never really transitioned out.

Damn you to hell...I now have 'Lump' going on a continuous loop in my head.

Are you sure about Blind Melon being forgotten? I hear their songs at least three times a week on our local radio station, and we live in a pretty small city.

1. Harvey Danger (I still enjoy every song on here.)
2. Hum (Though they're using that one song 'Stars' on that one car commercial)
3. Failure (Who I heard about only because of James Maynard Keenan's promotion)
4. The Flys (Got You Where I Want You is still a good song)
5. Len (Did this come out in 2000? "Steal My Sunshine" is still good.)

Nope, Summer of '99.
Would Everclear fall into this category? Just saying.

Also Event Horizon ( Unless it was early '00s)
Sponge

I said they were my favorite Punk album of the 90's.. its just that I do have their follow up CD (which I never listen to) I'm going to plug both CDs in my car changer this week to reminisce.

Are you thinking of Vertical Horizon? If so, then I think that you are talking about the early '00s.

How about Savage Garden.

oh... does anyone remember "Jesse, you're a good dog such a good dog!"

Yes I own PAW's Dragline CD and I catch hell for it always.

Yeah, that's it. I get the early '00s and late 90s mixed sometimes.

I respectfully disagree. While not ruling the charts I still think that they are fairly influencial. At least for my "Rock"-friends. And nothing will change the fact that "Betty" is actually one of the best albums of the 90´s.

Wha-wha-what?
That news just made my day. I love "Urban Hyms" and "Bitter Sweet Symphony" can be heard on the radio even today on a daily basis. Ashcrofts solo-outputs have been surprisingly solid as well.
Any release date yet?

I would put
-Dog eat Dog and
- Life of Agony
on the table though.

Chalk it up to the medium and my innate humor deficiency. I thought you were being "Very Serious." And thanks to this discussion I've had "Kitty" in my head for an hour (Kitty at my foot and I wanna touch it!! ...Over and over and over and..)

My personal favorite forgotten band of the 90's are The Refreshments. I still own both their albums, and I dig their brand of southwest pop.
I suppose you could have added Silverchair to the list if they hadn't just come out with a quasi-successful album last year. Sponge is a good catch though.

Maybe Veruca Salt and Reel Big Fish? There have to be a ton of ska-punk bands that were one and dones.
The Longpigs.
Dinosaur Jr.
The Wannadies.
My Life Story.
Shed Seven.
Bennett.
Spacehog.
Mansun. (I own pretty much everything they ever put out. I was a real fanboy back in the day)

Also, the Verve are already back together and playing not particularly well received live shows, including some of their new stuff. Not that great. Shame, cos Urban Hymns is pretty much one of a handful of near-perfect albums from the mid-nineties British indie scene.

I don't really think of the Smithereens as a 90s band, though. A lot of their best stuff came out in the 80s.
The Charlatans UK-- Direct heirs to the Stone Rose's throne. They should have taken over when they broke up, but instead Oasis came along and ruined it for everyone.

Luckily they are still around today. Sadly they can't even get their most recent CD released in the US....yet You can download it for free though on their website.

Faith No More-- I love Mike Patton, but I would love to see a new Faith No More album more than anything.

Ministry-- The band that defined industrial is playing it's last show "ever" next week in Chicago. I want to go, but I am broke and no one i know wants to go see them. Sucks.
Leaving Urge Overkill ("Sister Havanna," Pulp Fiction overload) out of the discussion just feels...wrong.

EDIT: And I know they continued into the '00s, but they are so forgotten that I forgot about them at first - Concrete Blonde.
I love James. Their work was patchy, but, when they were good... I just read on Wikipedia that they put out a new album a few weeks ago. I'm doubtful, at best.
I don't know if I'd put Ministry on there, they're still around. and Silverchair just popped back up.

Just because a band's no longer making music doesn't mean that they're "forgotten." There are still tons of Mike Patton fans around, and I'm guessing they didn't get into him via Peeping Tom.

Ha! Can't believe someone brought up James. Loved Laid, Wah Wah, and Seven. Seemed like they were just about to take off and then they disappeared. Maybe they are back?

I completely agree with you about Betty. I love Helmet and their sound. I interpreted the thread to mean "Bands that mainstream culture has forgotten," not "Bands that have zero cultural significance."

If its the latter, then I withdraw Helmet gladly. If its the former, I stand by my assertion. Just because you and I/your 'Rock Friends' remember them with fondness does not change the fact that 95% of America wouldn't know a Helmet song if it fell on them (Heavily, of course).

Ah, Life of Agony. Loved their cover of "Don't You Forget About Me," back when bands doing unexpected covers was a real novelty, not a business strategy.
