Heheh. My maternal grandmother's family came from Ireland to Canada to Rochester with the surname O'Neary, does that count?

I think Fantastic Films will probably be a lot more freeform, I'll probably want to check out the 70mm stuff and the Michael Reeves tribute. I'll wait to check the schedule for the rest.

So I did my raido thing this morning. I got 9/10 in 60 seconds which meant I aqquitted myself well but didn't win the cash. I take solace the fact that only 1 person has ever got 10 out of 10 and only 3 (including me) people have got 9 .

Absolutely.

Vigilance, Jim. Vigilance. These Yorkshiremen... you never know.

Sorry you didn't win, Ken, but congratulations nonetheless! I knew you'd kick ass.

So is it like snowing ash there now?
Not in London, at least. Beautifully sunny all day.

Although a classmate's going to be trapped in Guernsey for a few days, looks like.

Unfortunately not.

All it's done is generate dozens of dull conversations and maddening anecdotes about aunts who are stuck in Majorca.
At least it's a change from the circular election conversations.

Let me know if it goes all day of the triffids.
One of my friends says it smells like ash near her house, but she lives about 5 miles away from me and I stuck my head out the window and can't smell anything. The dog seems a bit unsettled though, so maybe it smells a bit?
Mom just called me in a panic and implored me to get a mask. (I was asthmatic as a kid.)

Yes, I'm serious.

I am somewhat under whelmed by the lack of volcanic ash outside my window. I think this means Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton won’t be rescuing me anytime soon.
Only thing i'm disappointed about is that it's taken 'til now for me to realise i could have been making Bruce Campbell/Ash jokes weeks back...

I love my wife but sometimes I dispair, every time we drive past a slightly dirty car she asks if that volcanic ash.
I got stuck in New York for an extra week and had to shell out for hotels and overpriced food so I was secretly hoping everyone back home would be choking on the ash, dammit.
Hope you get it back on the insurance Rusty, still, there's worse places to be stuck.

Like Newcastle.

or Liverpool.

Haha, our hotel was in what looked like the shittiest area of Queens so I think Liverpool and Newcastle would actually be better.

Don't think there is much hope with the insurance, we were with American Airlines who basically washed their hands of us, I believe anyone with a European airline were compensated for their extra accommodation? Me and the girlfriend maxed out our credit cards and we're gonna have to sell our Leeds festival tickets, I'm well fucking annoyed.
That's appalling, Rusty. Fingers crossed things work out for you.

Were you able to make any Coming To America jokes during your extended stay, at least?

Cheers, got mine crossed too but I'm not holding my breath.

Shouting "the royal penis is clean!" in the middle of Queens with an African accent went down a storm!

Actually, we really enjoyed ourselves staying in Queens for that extra week, we found this amazing deli on Rockaway Boulevard were the food was nice as anything else we had and the guy running it was brilliant stopping by everyone's table to chat with them. He even insisted on giving us free drinks when we told him we were stranded. It was a lot better than the generally rude twats in Manhattan anyway.

Rusty have you tried your insurance? A travel expert on the BBC was saying over the weekend that if the airlines don't payout then it's worth going down that route.

Excellent!

I would've found it very hard to not just drop in little non-sequiturs whenever possible.

"So where are you guys from?"
"Why not make it a cool million?"

That sounds fantastic! Reminds me of my favourite place Here. It's this little sandwich and ice cream bar that's no bigger than most newsagents'. It's reasonably priced, fast, and always hits the spot. To top it off, the guy who runs it follows your mob! The craic between us this season has been absolutely top-class (he doesn't think Rafa's for staying.)

Is there a London equivalent of the New Beverly? As far as I can see The Prince Charles off Leicester square is the only one. And that tends to show second runs of new releases, not revivals of older movies.
Time out is always a useful place to look - I'm no Londoner but it's the best listings for the city.
Speaking of theatres, when the hell is the National Media Museum gonna put up their Fantastic Films schedule? Inquiring minds want to know, Spike!

Actually, after looking at my workload for the next month, there's no way I'll be able to get up to Bradford. That drink's gonna have to be put on hold.
I know it's not London but if any of you lot are up Newcastle way you should check out the Tyneside Cinema, it's a really cool cinema and they have showings of older films all the time. Just check out the listings for their second birthday

I'm planning on going to the Superman and Ghostbusters showings.

Can't vouch for it now, but the Prince Charles put on some decent film fests back in the day. The Scala in King's Cross also had legendary horror/exploitation/kung fu all nighters (that's where Chow Yun Fat turned up dressed like some of his famous characters... good times). I don't think the Scala even shows films anymore though, last I heard they converted the building.

No idea where you would go today for a proper New Beverly equivalent. Closest thing would probably be wherever they do that Frightfest thing.

Hi guys. Another Londoner reporting for duty. And with the day off work, guaranteed the rain's coming down soon.

Oh, and I don't know if it's still required, but if it's UK release dates that you want, I go here.

I dont have sky and I been downloading Lost from Itunes.

I hope and pray that the last episode appears on there tomorrow. I just know I'm going to have it ruined by some assclown in his facebook status update...

I think I might be spending a lot of time at BFI Southbank this July. Just a guess, though.

Greetings. Been here for a while, first time posting in this thread. Originally from Yate, near Bristol (Greetings Mr. Savage!). Currently existing in South California. Just wanted to say hello, apologies for the intrusion, fairly inebriated.Carry on.

welcome Diomedes! Hopefully you'll find this thread one of the most fun, inclusive and self-deprecating on the entire web! How's life in So Cal and what do you miss (or not miss) about life in Yate?

Although I have only passed through it yate seems like a really nice place. Welcome to the boards man

S'happening, Di? (I'm pronouncing that "Dee.") If you like to rub shoulders with not just the common man, but movers and shakers on the political stage, you're in the right thread.
Thank you for the warm welcome Gentlemen. Yate's nice, but once you've been there a while then somewhere else is in order. The more I go back the more I miss it. I was recently stuck back home for a week more than I'd planned due to act of Volcano. I had nothing to do for a week besides miss work, go to the pub and catch up with friends. It was (obviously) terrible.

Whatever your politics or background, I hope we can all agree this was a truly harrowing event made more harrowing by the fact that only now, 38 years after the murder - yes, murder - of innocent people in Derry, an apology has been made.

While appreciated, an apology can't bring those victims back to life. Or any of the other innocents killed, wounded, traumatized, or disadvantaged in some way by despicable individuals, not just on Irish soil, but across the globe.

Congratulations to those who were vindicated today. The event is a truly inspiring story of hope. And full marks to Cameron (a guy I'm no fan of) for having the nerve to make an apology of that magnitude on behalf of other, lesser men... who couldn't even admit to their own wrongdoing.

It's good news on the apology but 12 years and £195M to figure out that it was unjustified?

Jesus Christ sometimes I wonder about my country.

I think this is key. It's about vindication, of course it doesn't change things but with any luck it will help the families move forward. Say what you want about Cameron (I'm no fan) but his apology seemed heartfelt.

The report is being criticised by the paras.

That's probably the most fantastic quote ever.

Of all the horrible stuff that the Heath administration wraught his allowing of the violence in Northern Ireland to escalate to such a level is perhaps the worst. It's interesting that Cameron was the first Prime Minister to publicy apologise for this, because it was largely the Conservative party who allowed the culture of violence in Northern Ireland to flourish.

Now to get myself banned. Whilst I'm happy that 'justice' has been served in the case of the Bloody Sunday atrocity I do think it's wise to not take such a cut and dried approach to the entire 'troubles'.

Outside of Bloody Sunday there are countless atrocities commited by all sides in the troubles which make making standard 'these guys were in the right' 'these guys were in the wrong' judgements a little shortsighted.

My issue with the Troubles is that with Ireland being the victim and Britain being the aggressor stuff like the Belfast School bombings or the Hyde Park bombings or the hundreds of British dead tend to get forgotten.
