The Billy Letters

I ran a couple of searches and nothing turned up, so here goes.

In the late '90s, pop-culture historian Bill Geerhart had a little too much time on his hands and a surfeit of stamps. So, for his own entertainment, the then-unemployed thirtysomething launched a letter-writing campaign to some of the most powerful and infamous figures in the country, posing as a curious 10-year-old named Billy. To his surprise, replies soon started pouring in. Everyone from Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld (on tree-fort diplomacy) to Oprah Winfrey, Mister Rogers, Janet Reno, and members of the Supreme Court had words of wisdom for Billy. ("I like the Egg McMuffin," wrote Justice Clarence Thomas when asked about his favorite McDonald's food. "Actually, I like almost everything there.") Responding to Billy's idea for a "Hustler for kids," Larry Flynt wrote back encouraging the fourth grader to "Hang in there. You'll be 18 before you know it."

As it turns out, no group hates to disappoint a child more than convicted killers, all of whom responded promptly to Billy's questions about dropping out of school. Their letters, published here for the first time, range from criminally insane to downright sensible, offering snapshots of the personalities behind some of America's most hideous crimes. Recently, Radar asked Billy to follow up with his mentors as a college student.
Read a handful of the letters here.

I read that yesterday. Some funny stuff. I loved how random Manson's was. And Flynt's advice was awesome.

These are... unsettling. And hilarious!

That's awesome. I love just how BATSHIT INSANE Manson's was with just a sprinkling of insight here and there. And seconded on Flynt's advice for a substitute to Hustler.

Thanks for posting this. I find it incredibly bizarre that Richard Ramirez keeps tabs on box-office totals.

If they had access to the internet on Death Row I wonder if Ramierez would be a Chewer.

IF?

-rr

ETA - His letters are creepy. Send pictures? Where do you go to school, who's your friend? I'm scared of this guy coming after me somehow just talking about him on the internet now.

This was terribly entertaining. I loved Larry Flynts advice to read the Sears catalog.

Wow, they get movies like 3:10 to Yuma in prison? Doesn't sound all that bad, really. And Ramirez probably does have some access to the internet, since he seems pretty up-to-date on the box office totals.

Or maybe he has a subscription to Variety.

That's hilarious stuff. Manson's didn't disappoint, it was as all over crazy as you'd imagine it would be.

"oh well, I'm just playing clown words to say I didn't forgit, Hellbilly"

Awesome. This needs to be the new "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

Is anyone else struck with the sudden urge to write to famous serial killers?

Would harassing the likes of Charles Manson be a good idea?

How fucking nuts is it to recieve a letter that has "NIGHTSTALKER" in giant ass letters on the top but then to have tiny little handwritting on the bottom.
It's funny how the later letter is not on Nightstalker's letterhead. His psycho popularity dwindled and he was left with only loose leaf.

I guess the other question is, which stationary store handled that order for Nightstalker letterhead?

Office Max. Guess he forgot to refill when he ran out.

Or he quit his job in the laundry room. At least I know my tax dollars are being used for such things as buying the Nightstalker his creepy letterheads.

Nightstalker, Inc.
