I enjoyed "Odd Thomas", mostly for the quirky characters and town they inhabit. I thought it narratively failed in the last third or so, however. It was the sort of story that made me wish Koontz would license it to some talented writers and let them run with a tv series (like Lindsay has done with his Dexter character). Someone with more imagination than Koontz could do something really fun with Odd Thomas.

I haven't read the other books, however.

I gave up on Koontz long before these came out, but seriously, Alex, if you've never read 'Watchers", "Phantoms" and especially "Darkfall", give them a read. They were all pretty good.

Phantoms didn't do much for me, and neither did Darkfall- although I loved the way it started. I feel like all of his books get worse once they take the trip into the bizarre.... they just get silly rather than creepy for me. Never could get into his stuff.

This book has a lot of good things going for it (the image of a strange smiling man with numerous dark wraiths surrounding him, for example) and then some just plain retarded ones (the backwards in time dark room, for example). It's also yet another reason I want to sit Koontz down and explain to him that no, not every villain needs to be a racist Nazi drug dealing pedophile in order for us to not like them.

That's another thing that got me; everyone...every single person in this book (with the exception of his parents, which, c'mon) gets along with and loves Odd. I mean, Koontz, c'mon buddy, have SOME conflict, have SOMEONE disagree or not believe that Odd can see ghosts, have SOMEONE be skeptical. What irks me is that there truly IS a lot of good, fun stuff in here (Odd is a nice narrator, and a charming one at that) but it's weighed down by some lazy story telling choices regarding characters and some just plain retarded stuff.

Also? Coyotes. Is this a theme with your books or something, Dean?
