The Best Opening in Videogamedom

Thread Starter
What videogame has the best intro?

I was inspired to put this question to you guys after reading this quote in a Fallout thread:

Quote:
Count Floyd

I haven't played Fallout 2, but if there's a better opening in videogamedom than Fallout's, I haven't seen it.
I do believe FO2's intro to be quality...

Fallout 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AythkRWaSss

But my personal pick has got to be...

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyjCmnkGB1I

Rarely am I impressed by videogame intros, but I've viewed Dawn of War's more than a few times because I didn't hit escape at the beginning and consequently watched the video after catching the first few seconds.

I'm very interested to see what everyone else digs!

ps. Bollocks on the message board requiring a number test to run a search.

Ninja Gaiden on the NES, and Resident Evil and Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain on the PS1 have always stuck with me. And despite the games themselves being somewhat lackluster, the last 3 MK's (Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon) and Shaolin Monks) have been pretty amazing.

Nice topic.

Super Metroid. Not so much the stuff after "The Last Metroid Is In Captivity", more the stuff right after you turn on the system......an ambient score, a lab full of dead bodies, and the last Metroid chirping away in a jar.

That's the fucking title screen.

Agreed wholeheartedly on Ninja Gaiden, though. I'm fairly sure it's one of the first uses of cutscenes in a video game, and that moonlight duel is still pretty great by today's standards.

I agree with Resident Evil for sure, ditto RE4.

Bioshock's first five minutes or so is simply superb.

And though I'm gonna get laughed at the beginning of Max Payne really drew me into...even if the game didn't quite live up to my expectations and became somewhat laughable halfway through.

I gotta say I loved Metroid Prime's opening title sequence. No other series has got the ambient noise down like Metroid does. Every time I turned on that game the title screen and music sucked me into the world completely.
Half-Life deserves some points.
It's not technically the opening I guess, but the credits sequence of Call of Duty 4 had me completely enthralled.

The best is Bioshock though. When Rapture is revealed I lose my mind everytime. Just fantastically done.

X-Com.

I still love this fucking game. HARDCORE.

Plus it's like Liefeld did the drawings. Haha.

Plus I love the losing screen:

Anything Blizzard ever made, ever.

Also, the opening to Double Dragon on the NES.

Unnamed guy walks up to your girlfriend, socks her in the stomach and carries her off with his gang of thugs.

Mission 1 (cue cool music)

Onimusha 3.
Final Fant- Sorry. I can't do it.
No question about it: Dragon's Lair, if you also take into account the "trailer" loop the game had when you were not playing.

[update:fixed]
Not to nitpick, but it's Lair.

I wouldn't want to see the dragon's layers....
The first cutscene you see in Silent Hill 1 sets the tone of the game immediately, with that spooky fucking music.

I remember a number of opening cutscenes from PS1 games that used to blow my mind when I was younger, like FFVII, and Fear Effect 2.

Starfox: the Arwings flying out of that crazy tunnel, in zany polygonal madness (on a SUPER NINTENDO), with that alarm blaring. Hit the turbo, and the squad flies out into the fray. Awesome.
Way back in the day, the opening credits for Tenchu:Stealth Assassins on the PS1 BLEW ME AWAY. Still my favorite videogame music.
Any of the Alone in the Dark games...although, 4 should not be started up in the middle of the night with the lights off...for what should have been an OBVIOUS reason.
Echoing Bioshock and Half-Life 2(although I think Tom meant the first game, which I sadly have not played). Not really intros per se, but the the opening stages.

Syndicate by Bullfrog.

Cyborgs and hit and run abductions ftw.

For my money it's this:

Diablo II

I was always partial to the intro of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Still love that music.

The opening of Final Fantasy VIII has always been one of my favorites.

I can't believe I forgot this one:

When my buddy got his soundblaster, it was a revelation.

Rewatching some of the intros posted (like my own) really makes me want to go back and replay some of these.
Shit, I just bid on X-Com for the PS1 because it's a pain to get working correctly on my PC.

Guerrilla War - Nintendo

Still don't know how they got away with this. Imagine this game coming out today:

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Both Half Lifes
Bioshock
FF7
Urban Champion

Those all blew me away in some way or another.

Play Half-Life NOW!!
This double-post was to impress upon you how 'rad' Half-Life STILL is...

(actually, I have NO idea where this came from)

Shadow hearts from the new world is a personal fave..

Shes no Koda Kumi, and it's no FFX-2

Only kidding, I have a couple Utada albums and they are great.

Can't believe I forgot

The simple NES days were a thing of beauty

Road Rash a.k.a. the rightful owner of Rusty Cage in videogaming.
Yeah, I think Bad Dudes takes the prize on this one. It's like every 10 year old's dream.

I'll throw my vote in for (surprise) Golvellius: The Valley of Doom for the Sega Master System. Great little backstory with stunning music which just sets the tone for everything to follow.

Resident Evil 4 is fantastic (though it's more of a "pre-title" sequence that goes on for a while).
Nothing will ever top Soul Blade.
I still say Fallout wins.
BioShock is my most recent favorite, but my all time favorites go to Metal Gear Solid and Vagrant Story. MGS was just so cinematic and really unlike anything I had seen in a game before. It perfectly set up the amazing experience to come. Vagrant Story built on that cinematic foundation that MGS set but one-upped it with the absolute best looking graphics the PSX ever saw.

I second/third Onimusha 3 - an intro so good it even had its own fight choreographer. And FFX wasn't too shabby either... nothing like a bit of Sin mass destruction.
Can't believe that nobody's mentioned Descent: Freespace or Full Throttle yet.
I wouldn't call it the best intro, especially not the best of games, but I've always had a soft spot for this.

Simple, but classy.
I don't know if it's the best ever, but the first game intro to make a serious impression on me was the PC version of Mechwarrior 2
post #42 of 50
Chrono Cross' intro always warmed my heart.
It's not classic, and certainly nowhere near the best. Especially since CGI seems to improve in quality far too quickly to make them stand the test of time - but Motorstorm's intro is still exceptionally well done.

Still, Sam & Max has an excellent intro if we're going classic. As is Onimusha 3's.
I always had a massive soft spot for FULL THROTTLE, personally.
Wasn't that game not so good?
T'was pretty short, but I fucking adored the thing - one of my fave games ever personally.
Huh. I'll give it a skim if I can find it.
Give it a go Dom, like I said, its short but its done with obvious love and care for the animation, story and voice acting (Mark Hamill as the villain is gold) and the things overflowing with charm to spare.

I must have played it through 4 or 5 times over the years.
