Boston-area Chewer meetup

Never been to Boston before, but I'll be in town May 17-21 for a design conference at the Sheraton. Any of you interested in getting together someplace on Saturday the 17th? If nothing else, care to point a chap in the right direction for decent restaurants/bars/local sites worth visiting?

Thanks!

Meeting internet people intimidates me, but I may be up for it...

And I'll do my best to recommend things to do/places to go. Which Sheraton are you staying at? Newton? Cambridge? Downtown?

Thanks for the reply, Parker. I'm staying at the downtown location. I know I won't have a lot of free time except for an hour or two during lunches or if I decide to bail on some of the post-conference activities. Any recommendations would be incredibly helpful!

If you're going out to lunch, I strongly recommend the Parish Cafe. It's mostly a sandwich place, but the sandwiches are created by all the best chefs in Boston and they're incredible. Food costs about 10 bucks, but it's a good deal for a gourmet sandwich in downtown Boston. And it's on Boylston street, which is right down the road from where you're staying.

If you're looking for a great local bar, check out Bukowski's, which is right around the corner from where you're staying. HUGE beer list (and a great selection of international beer). No alcohol though (kind of ironic, given their name) but they also have a pretty decent food menu (including a peanut-butter burger...that's actually really good!)

I'd avoid most places on Newbury Street because they're really expensive, but the Upper Crust is a great pizza joint and the Other Side cafe (the end of Newbury Street on the other side of Mass. Ave) is a cool little hipsterish food and drink place. And pop into Newbury Comics for deals on CD's and movies and....comics.

If you really love non-trendy dive bars (like I do), I strongly recommend TC's Lounge. It's close to where you're staying and it'll give you a really good idea of local flavor. Plus, the beers are wicked cheap and the crowd is always entertaining. Pretty good jukebox too. It's right off of Mass. Ave, around the corner from Boylston street. It's an honest to goodness dive though, so be aware.

I'm assuming you're a movie lover, so if you have any time to slip away to Cambridge, I strongly recommend taking a redline train to Harvard Square and going to the Brattle. Looks like they're doing a Coen Bros. retrospective when you're in town. I'm probably going to go to the Raising Arizona/Big Lebowski double feature on Monday or Tuesday, just because I've never seen Raising on the big screen and it just might be my favorite comedy ever.

I'll add more after I think of stuff, but that should be enough to get you started.

If there is any way you can get a decent amount of free time, go to the New England Aquarium or the Museum of Science, you won't regret it. You may be better off for food just hitting Faneuil Hall, there is enough variety there where you can find whatever kind of bar/food you want, plus, its great people watching. If its nice out, grab a Sausage from a vendor on the street and take a walk around. It never gets boring, and I've lived 25 minutes from the city all my life. Anything specific you are looking for/to do?

Thanks a heap, Hero!

Nah, there's nothing in particular that I was looking for. Unfortunately, the conference runs from 7:30 to 5:30 every day, plus assorted end-of-day events, like happy hours with several hundred complete strangers (yay). In all, not a lot of time to stroll around, but if there's something worth venturing out for, I'd happily skip the provided dinner snacks. Ya hooked me with the aquarium, though. Do you know if that would be in relative easy access from downtown? Then again, I will have Saturday from 4pm on for free time.

Just hop on the Green line inbound and transfer to the blue line on Government Center (you want the Aquarium Stop).

Or, take the Green line downtown and just walk. It's not that far.

Either way, from the Prudential Center, you're talking around 15 mins, 20 tops.

If you make it out there you should also stop at Charlie's Kitchen - awesome diner with bar upstairs, great cheeseburgers, and occasionally some awesome shows like once a month or something. And if you're there during daytime and you're into obscure avant/psychedelic music go to Twisted Village records a couple doors over from there.

Seconded. I love Charlie's. Best juke box ever. My girlfriend and I had our first date there.
