Next Movie Draft - Page 2

I'll play if there's room.
In again
If someone here can help me along (it'll be a first for me), I'd love to join up assuming there's room.
It's funny, on balance, I fucking hate the 80s more than any other decade for some of the celluloid atrocities foisted upon decent society (some of which I'm fully expecting to see by at least Round 3).

But it's also got at least 3 of my most beloved titles in it so if Banks gets any of those, I might even be more narked than I was about the ones he pinched off me for the 70s Draft. At least one of which is assuredly on his list and I know the other two are topping at last two other people's. Those putains know who they are too.

So which to go for first. There's the rub.
Mr. Straxboy, I will watch your career in this draft with great interest, since you stole many of my picks in the last draft already. You might very well pull of the gloves now.

And the discussion on this one might just kill the boards. Too many nostalgia flicks vs too much celluloid crap.
Kirbs needs to give us a ruling on foreign language titles up front as one of my pivitol titles depends on it...

Same as before or discounting altogether.
For consistency's sake, do we want to name a specific release to mark the "End of the '80s?"

It's going to be fucking beautiful. I think Spike's head might explode.

The rule in the 70s draft, IIRC, was that the US theatrical release date had to be within the time frame, and it had to be in its original language. That rule screws over one of my later round picks this draft, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't the case this time around as well.
Nostalgia is going to be murder. But on the other hand, how many legitimately classy picks are there for this decade? I have a feeling it's going to get ugly a lot faster than the 70s did.
I'm finding plenty. There's also lots of legitimate, justified nostalgia picks too.

Again, this is gonna be interesting.
When is this starting? I'm smack in the middle of writing final papers right now.

What I like about this decade is that, while inferior to the 70's, it's has a lot of great pick in a lot of different fields. The tough thing is balancing nostalgia movies (that are good like Crow said) with the gems that everyone will fight for.

Thanks.

So 33 plus tom de plume, Anyawatchin Angel, stump, HunterTarantino, James May is 38. Assuming James May understands the process or someone can hip him to it.

Diva would be 39 --- can't really say start date just yet. We always start on Mondays and Memorial Day is getting in the way coming up. Still deciding.

I assume Nick wants a spot so he would be 40. That's usually the cap on these things but if we only do 5 rounds and no bonus I think we can add 5 more. I'm going to hold those spots and see if past players want them. You can PM me if you want in.

Diva, Mr. May, Nick --- just give me the heads up yay or nay.

I think we'll play by the same foreign films rule unless someone can convince me otherwise. To either eliminate them, go off of foreign release date, etc.
Well, if there's a spot left, I'll take it.

For those that need continuity: Sex Lies and Videotape ends the era.
If there's a spot - count me in.

Considering last time, I've got to redeem myself.
I say lose the foreign language rule this time. This decade did quite the screwjob on a bunch of fantastic films, and I can think of even one case where the out-of-timeframe US release made it better. Let's just run with it.
So foreign titles that never had a US theatrical release (but fall in the release timeline for their home country) are out of bounds?

Technically, yeah. I'd go with Crow: foreign movies didn't get the home release they had later on. It would eliminate a lot of good flicks.

Didn't have to be original language-- it just had to be the version that was released theatrically during the period.

Thematically, that's a perfect choice, but it cuts off selections at August 1989. Forget I said anything.

I did have to be original language. That's why Le Samourai was disqualified.

And I think I like the Sex Lies marker and plan to keep it.
Sex, Lies and Videotape is an excellent cutoff point, signalling the end of the high concept 80's and the beginning of the shortlived early 90's independent movement. I like.
It's cool, I can work with this.
Well, I can see about seven possible choices that the new cutoff eliminates (and one that absolutely kills me), but it makes logical sense.

So we are going with the New York release date? IMDB has it playing at Sundance in January. We're not going with that month, right (I hope)?
I don't think a festival date counts as a release date, does it?
That's what I figured, just want to be sure before I start scouting for talent.
Kirby, I think you should post the rules in a separate thread or post them so we can go hunt with the correct time frame in mind.

Nah, festival doesn't count. I'll post a rules thread at some point. But pretty much the same as we did for last draft.
Cool, thanks Kirby.
Shit. If I'm too late, then at least put me on the waiting list, if anyone drops.
Room for one more? I'll go on the waiting list if need be.

So Chris A. and tommy make 40.

Diva, Nick, James May still deciding. So we have room for anywhere from 2 to 5 other people.
So Kirby, when?
If it starts after Labor Day, I'm in. If not, I'll give up my spot so someone else can play.
Memorial Day?
EDIT: NM. I'm so very confused.
Whoops! Yeah. Clearly my mind is fucked from stying up all night writing papers.

Tentative start date is next Friday. That would be Day 1. We'll skip Monday as it's a holiday and Day 2 will be Tuesday. We would finish on the 6th then.

Diva -- I can put you in Day 2 and you could play then right?
Damn. By Day 2, my top movies wlll likely be gone...

I do want to play. Ah well, Day 2 it is.
Kirby, might I suggest just waiting and starting the whole thing on Tuesday? Seems like starting and then taking three days off would take some of the wind out of the sails, especially if we're having each round split over two days like last time.
If at all possible, whether I start on Day 1 or Day 2, I would like a daytime slot. I really only have regular web access during working hours. Many thanks.

ETA: If that's an issue I can bow out, no problem.
Shit. Kirby, not to be a pain in the ass for you, but I might drop out depending on the actual dates that are proposed here. Is it alright if I let you know if the actual dates are settled? Otherwise I drop off right now if that would stir some inconvenience.
(This is all assuming I made it on the list. If not, I'll just fuck off quietly)

If it holds any weight, I'd vote for starting it after the weekend as well. The day it starts now would be, literally, the busiest day of my entire year.
I'd prefer a Friday, May 30 start date myself as I will be on vacation on Memorial Day through Thursday. I'm sure I can find a workaround if necessary or email someone my picks.

I'll take the comments under advisement.

I will say that if you're going to be gone for three, four days, I can't see the sense in being involved in the draft.
I'll play if there is room or if someone drops.
Kevin, you can swap with me. I herby resign with great sadness in my heart.

Though I will follow your career with great interest, my little padawan.

Sorry for the inconvienience Kirby! But better now than later.

True, and certainly don't move it on my account. If it is confirmed for a Memorial Day start, I'd probably have to bail. Any time after the 29th, though, and I'm in.
