48 Hrs 08

Last year a few of us ended up competing in 48hr film competitions at around the same time, so hopefully it works out about the same this year.

To be honest I wasn't totally looking forward to it this year, as I've been bogged down with a lot of other commitments but now that I've managed to clear my schedule a bit I'm starting to get excited again. I like the idea that I'll have a finished movie in about a weeks time and I have no idea what it's going to be.

So anyway, post here if you'll be entering one of these anywhere around the world.

I was getting all geared up for the Houston one, but my new job in Austin is going to make that difficult both financially and geographically. However, turns out Austin's having one just a few weeks later! So it works for me.

Uh-oh. That's not a good sign. Was it the audio, horrid? WAS IT THE AUDIO?

It was probably the audio. It's always the audio.

No it was the exporting back to tape, it just froze halfway through, so I stopped it, moved the work area slider up to where it had stalled ( didn't have time to do over from the beginning) started it again, then the same thing happened about 30 seconds from the end, so I did the same thing again, and it worked but I gave the parts a little over lap so that I wouldn't miss anything, but unfortunately that put us slightly over the maximum time limit of 7 minutes, and thus disqualified us from any awards or prizes. We still get screened though. and of course after it's too late a exported the whole thing again and this time it worked perfectly so the computer seemed to have just decided to fuck up right when we needed it not to.

A bunch of my co-workers won the Philly competition. I was moving that day. Congrats to them!

If I wasn't currently shooting a film for my class final, I might have entered one of these. Maybe they'll have one later on in the summer in Atl.

Well aside from the technical hiccups at the end it was a really fun weekend. We got given Animal movie as our genre, so we decided to make a fern gully type of movie where there was a happy community of woodland creatures who get devastated by an encroaching logging company, leading them to eventually stand up and fight back, which gave us the excuse to gorily dispatch as many puppets as we could.

I ended up getting about 3 hours sleep the entire weekend. Editing from 700:am Sunday until 6:45pm on no sleep was a new experience.

The team got along probably the best it ever had, nobody really got pissy with each other, pretty much just laughed off our disaster of a finish.

Well we've got our movie online at

Myspace

and YouTube

The YouTube's sound is a little old time radio sounding though.

Hope you guy's enjoy.

(I should also note that while it was shot and edited in 48 hours it has had a lot of work done on it since then and had about 2 minutes of deleted scenes reinserted)

A lot of fun Horrid, and great use of our songs! Some really fun moments there and the lizard's fantastic!

Can't believe I missed you posting this! I must have been moving when you put this up. Either way, very nice Horrid - some excellent nastiness and gore in there.

That was pretty entertaining.

Thanks a lot Nick, I'm really glad/relieved that you liked it. I think your songs really help make the third act.

thanks to everyone else for watching, it is very much appreciated

We just put our Atlanta entry on Vimeo.

edit: might not be safe for work... mainly for dirty words.

strangers with faces

I don't know what it is like everywhere else, but the folks running the Atlanta 48 Hour Film Project seem to be less and less interested each year... and the prices keep going up.

Anyway, we drew "spy" for our genre this time. The character was a meteorologist. The line was "What do you mean, we're out of it?" We were a little upset at how unorganized everything seemed to be this go round and I think it came through with how we dealt with our assigned elements... all in all though this one is definitely my favorite 48 Hour Film I have been involved in. Was a whole lot of fun and I love the movie.

Also... horrid, you did a great job with yours man. I have never seen anyone pull the "animal" genre and you turned it into a fun little movie. Good work.

That was really well done kingdaywalker, it was experimental but not to the point of alienating the audience, and your two leads nailed the awkward tension.

Like Horrid above I wasn't as stoked for this, this year as I was last year. I've been bogged down with a lot of work (which is good) and life (future ex-wives suck), but once we got a team together I found I had landed on a great team. And that went a long way toward making this experience fun.

We ended up drawing Fantasy as our genre. The prop was a tray. The Character was a Lifeguard named Harold or Harriet Ralston. The line was "That's not the way I see it."

It can thusly be viewed here...

I have to give a ton of credit to the crew we had. They were enthusiastic and willing to put in the hours. Our lead actor, Tony Ware, was a dynamo, quite literally throwing himself into his role.

I was also fortunate to have a great Co-Director who was not only able to share the burden of keeping energy up on the project, but was willing to take a risk on a serious fantasy project and take it even farther than I had first imagined. We were really pushing the envelope of disaster by striving to make a costumed fantasy drama in a span of two days. I feel pretty good about how it turned out.

Coincidentally our awards ceremony is tonight and we have been nominated in the following categories...

Best Film
Best Writing
Best Editing
Best Acting
Best Cinematography
Best Use of Characrter: Harold/Harriet Ralston (Lifeguard)
Best Art Direction
Best Special Effects
Best Choreography
Best Costumes

We used a DVX100a and DVX100b as our cameras. Fun little fact, we did have a heavy duty real deal Steadicam rig and operator but eschewed it and used a $50 hand spec built Handicam for the chase scene.

And to reiterate again, we had a really, really awesome team that was willing to work hard with us.
