Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

Game Videos has the first video of the new Banjo-Kazooie game and despite a move away from the platforming of the older games I think it looks like a lot of fun. I'm hoping that Viva Pinata was a step on Rare's recovery and from the looks of the video those hopes may be founded.

Essentially the game looks to be based around the building and use of vehicles, kind of like Banjo-Kazooie meets Lego.

- GI says their first vehicles was a 4 wheeled kart with a spring attached to the bottom that allowed them to jump things. They later found a helicopter blade that allowed their kart to fly. Later they added balloons to the vehicle and put the blade on the back and created a hovercraft.
- RARE showed them a vehicle that was a monster truck that was able to detach its chasis to become a mini bike. When the bike ramped off a cliff it revealed collapsible glider wings and started flying.- There will be 1,600 parts including weapons that you'll be able to attach to the vehicles.
- The town is called Showdown Town.
- GI says that despite the large focus on vehicles it still features platform elements from the previous games like traditional platforming, tight rope walking and jiggy piece collecting.
- Showdown Town is 16 times larger than anything RARE has created before.
- Every level has a different intro. Nutty Acres begins with a credits spoof of 80's soap opera's like Dallas.- Note collecting is back and will act has currency that'll allow you to bu vehicle blueprints.
- RARE says there are 15 different challenges spread across 6 different levels. There will also be side missions.
Looks like it could be a lot of fun

why is mario in that screenshot?

Because Rare hate their former masters.
apparently that Mario is drivable.

Game's looking great - I'm really glad Rare isn't just going with the formula on this one. I love the original Banjo Kazooie, but Tooie was just too much of a good thing to the point of being daunting right at the outset of the game.

Between this and Viva Pinata 2's announcement, Rare's made me a happy gamer recently.

Okay this video

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/dor/object...entary_p2.html

Has made me kind of excited for the game. Just having the hub world be a museum containing sections devoted to the levels from Kazooie/Tooie is greatness and the game seems to control really well.

What came out last, Conker or Perfect Dark? Because those were the last Rare games I actually gave a fuck about.

Conker's Bad Fur Day.

However Viva Pinata was actually kind of good and Banjo looks like it could capture the energy of its prequels.

That's a terribly unflattering screenshot.

How about this one

No love for Kameo?

The banjo series is a something I wanted to get into bet never had time too. They were great looking games in the day, this new one looks interesting.

Not to mention, about damn time there's some decent platformers for the 360. It can be my favourite genre (not counting the myriad of mediocre to crap platformers on any system, but counting gems like Jak or R&C that made the PS2 such a wonderful machine) and apart from Assassin's Creed, 360 is a platform wasteland.

Man this new preview on Eurogamer bumped this up to the top of my anticipation list. Game sounds fantastic and the multiplayer sounds hilarious.

I got maybe 5 minutes with the game at E3 but it is pretty goddamn fun. Reminds me of the old games in a good way, even though I wasn't a huge fan of the series. But just a big bright colorful expansive cartoon world that you can explore at your leisure. Definitely looking forward to it.

The idea of just being able to construct your own lego style vehicles in multiplayer sounds awesome.

Microsoft is offering an almost suspiciously awesome deal for this: First, the retail price is $39.99. Second, if you pre-order you'll receive a code to download the original Banjo-Kazooie on XBLA for free, two weeks before its official release.

Also, owning both Nuts & Bolts and the original BK will finally activate the fabled Stop N' Swop in the original game.
Yeah, just pre-ordered from Amazon. Forty bucks for a brand new game plus the original (awesome) BK is too hard to pass up.

I'm almost as excited to replay Banjo-Kazooie as I am to try out Nuts and Bolts. The original Banjo was one of the best games on the N64, despite it's similarities to Mario. I'm trying to remember if it's Banjo or Banjo-Tooie that had you changing yourself into a washing machine at some point.

Weren't the Banjo games collectathons?

Collectathons with charm.

I think on each level you had to get 8 Jigsaw pieces, 100 notes, 5 jingos and something else.
Yeah, that's why I never played them for more than 10 minutes. I hate games like that.
Im actually really looking forward to this. Its been a long time since i have played a platformer and itll be a nice change of pace from all the FPSs. I dont know if im just jaded, but shooting people just isnt as fun as it used to be.
I don't give a shit if something is a "collectathon" as long as the actual collecting is fun. Which both Banjo games are.
I was a pretty big N64 gamer back in the day and never picked up a Banjo game. Is the original game even worth bothering if you didn't play it 10 years ago or better yet, hated the fuck out of DK 64 and Star Fox Adventures?

Donkey Kong 64 is collectathon gameplay taken to almost Dadaist extremes and Starfox Adventures is just willfully dull. Banjo-Kazooie is pretty much Mario 64 and has the benefit of some truly fantastic worlds and creatures. There's one level which essentially consists of you trying to swim around a gigantic mechanical shark.
So nostalgia doesn't factor in to the originals? Like I loved Goldeneye back in the day, and if it wasn't for the memories, there would be no way I'd ever play that again.
What Spike and Slater said.

Banjo-Kazooie is of course highly derivative of Mario 64 but I think it exceeds it in nearly every way. I thought Banjo-Tooie started to suffer from collectathon bloat and never quite finished it, though I always wanted to take another crack at it. Also I think it ran at about 15 frames per second. DK 64 was just a mess.

I would only avoid Banjo-Kazooie if you hated the fuck out of Mario 64.

I don't think that's the case here (although I haven't played BK in years) because the 3D platformer genre hasn't really evolved the way FPSs have. I mean, Mario 64 is the first one ever and is probably still in the top five. If you like the genre, BK is a must.

For me it's a mix of nostalgia and also recognising that with Banjo Kazooie Rare were at their peak in terms of level design. To be honest it's probably more nostalgia.
I'm actually worried that it's nostalgia. Mixed with what passed for good camera control back in those days, I do wonder if it's still any good. And I dug the hell out of back then. However, it's a hell of a fucking deal, considering XBLA prices now, which means that in and of itself, the N64 game will probably cost between 10-20 bucks. I guess it's preorder time. Anyone know a release date (for either) yet?
Shit, I may go and blindly preorder this. I really am wondering why this game is only going to cost $40. I doubt this was cheap to make.

The new game comes out on Nov. 14th. Expect to get the free game in the last week of October.
The original Banjo-Kazooie is definitely one of my all-time favorite games. After seeing the footage on IGN, I really wanna play Nuts & Bolts, but I don't have a 360!

I think the pricing schemes for this and the 2nd Viva Pinata are to try to draw in more kids to the system.
I think this game is going to do a great job at showing how hopelessly out of touch Rare is with today's gaming market.

Yeah they should have totally implemented a cover system into the game.
Can't believe this is actually within a month or so of coming out - I'm hoping that Banjo can still resonate in today's marketplace, because I'd like to see this world continue to evolve in future games. But hey, I never expected to see Banjo in any form on the 360, so I'll take it, even if it is the last one.
Demo came out today. Just curious as to everyone's thoughts on the game.

The humor and art direction are spot on, and there's definitely a hint of that earlier Banjo magic...but the vehicle stuff just leaves me completely cold. I've quit the demo twice now midway through, both times because I've been completely bored/uninterested in completing the jiggy challenges in the first level.
I really enjoyed the demo and tooled around in it for well over an hour, got three of the Jiggies in BanjoLand but had issues with the damn Clanker's Eyes one.

I'm not 100% sold only because it's the holiday season and I'm really, really cheap, but I liked it a good deal more than I thought I would and may pre-order it at least for the original BK and get to this game whenever I get to it.

Absolutely gorgeous too. And funny. However the full game turns out, it's clear Rare did not half-ass this project.
The demo's been getting nearly unanimously positive reactions around the 'net, and while I don't want to spoil it by downloading it myself, I'm very relieved by what I've heard thus far.

Can't wait until I can hop into the full game in just about a week n' a half.
What's the verdict from you guys who played it?
This game is cool as shit. I need to play some multiplayer. Some of the vehicles out there are fucking nuts. The Xwing and Tie Fighter look bad ass.

25 bucks at Amazon. fucking worth it. It feels a bit janky at first to get used to the controls, but building shit...it's that Little Big Planet feel. And then we can play multiplayer.
