The Last Shadow Puppets

Brief catch-up: it's a side project of Alex Turner of Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane of Liverpool band The Rascals, with producer James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco, formerly Simian) handling percussion stuff and Owen Pallett (Arcade Fire and Final Fantasy) conducting the string accompaniment.

They've got this great Scott Walker/early Bowie vibe that they pull off really really well without sounding like a, well, sounds-like band. Their first album just came out in the States a few weeks back and it's solid stuff. Beyond the aesthetic influences, there's some solid songwriting here and a warm sound that's enthusiastic and youthful (these guys are still pretty fucking young, even by today's indie standards), as opposed to false nostalgia for a music they (or I, for that matter) weren't even around for.

Curious to see who else has heard/enjoyed these guys.

I knew about the Arctic Monkeys connection, but I didn't know that Pallet was responsible for the string work. It's an interesting album, seems a little over-zealous at times but it has this infectious sense of fun that sees it through its rocky patches.
