Black Hole

I was actually able to pick this up at the local library yesterday and it was definitely deserving of its praise. Probably one of the few books about teenagers that get's the horniness, love and pettyness down well. Something to wash the horrendous Degrassi taste out of my mouth.

I know it's been said Fincher has been named to direct and while this could come out well. It's pretty clear some of the sex has to be toned down unless the MPAA gets a far reaching change up. That and some of the transformations will probably gross out a few especially the guy with the neck mouth.

Not to mention great black & white art, Burns did a helluva job with this.

Definitely the apex of Burns' comic work (hey, I love Big Baby and El Borbah, but Black Hole is easily his most accomplished narrative).

I once got to watch Burns ink a drawing. He has truly inhuman control of the brush.

I just ordered a copy of this from a another library in the area, I should be getting it within the week. Having read a couple of the individual issues I'm looking forward to reading this.

It's a really excellent novel, but the movie version will be watered down to the point of why bother? Ain't a studio running that will touch all that grim teen sex.

When I was six years old I really wanted to love this movie but it was always so boring...

I have a theory that those talking slits represent vaginas. Like I said, just a theory, but I think there might be a connection.
The essence of this book is the telling. The horrors of teen sexuality is common material and Burns doesn't forge new ground (at least none that I was able to pick up on). But the art and the pacing of the story make for such a complete visceral experience. I really don't see how a cinematic interpretation can match this.

Exactly, it's not groundbreaking stuff in terms of story. It's just a very good story involving teens and sex. But that talking neck slit is going to freak the shit out of people if that gets depicted. Personally, I'd rather see an adapatation of TORSO than this story.

A movie adaption could be good, but it has to be a low key film. The book has many aspects that are intentionally grotesque and that will definitely limit the audience. The first filmic equivalent that pops into my head is Cronenberg.
