Toronto

Anyone who is from (or frequents) the Toronto area have any advice for a first time visitor? I have my 8 month old daughter with me, so my options are a bit limited.

I'm mostly looking for decent restaurants. I don't want/need anything too expensive or fancy, a good/interesting meal for under $20 would be great. Not that I won't spend more if you really think it is worth it (and it is baby friendly enough). Also, proximity to King Street between John Street and Blue Jays Way (we're within walking distance of the baseball stadium) is a big plus.

Also, any places to visit? I'm looking for places where I can spend about 1-3 hours at a time that are baby friendly. She (the baby) doesn't need to enjoy anything specific about it, she is only 8 months old... she just likes action and people bustling around... but I don't want to go somewhere that a possibly loud baby would be frowned upon... although she is good over 95% of the time in public. So, I'm looking for places for me where I could bring her along.

Went to a pretty good Thai place tonight, but there are so many restaurants, it is hard to decide!

Baton Rouge is a restaurant I recommend. Pretty damn good.

CN Tower is definitely worth the trip once. The glass floor, and view is great.

Casa Loma is a cool tour. Hockey Hall of Fame of course. If you want into some cool geekery go to the Silver Snail on Queen Street.

Can't thing of too much else with a baby in tow.

Thanks, Billy!

I looked some of those up just now, and I think I'll hit up at least some of them.

Do you know if the zoo is any good?

I spent most of my one & only visit to Toronto in the Brass Rail strip club. Although I had a really great time & would recommend it, it doesn't seem quite like what you're looking for. Sorry.

The Zoo was incredible from what I remember, but it's pretty far from the downtown core I believe.

Though you can get there via public transportation, the zoo is indeed extremely far from your area. If the child was a bit older, and could muck around the water park a little (and if it wasn't a crappy a day as it is today), I think it'd be worth it though.

As for dinnery type places, the Red Tea Box on Queen West is supposed to be unbelievable, if a little pricey at $25 a head. It's open solely for lunches/early dinner, but the place looks fantastic. I'll be taking my wife there for her birthday next week myself.

The Museum I hadn't been to since the revamp, but having gone last week to check it out along with the new Darwin exhibit, I'd say its well worth it as well. Its baby friendly enough too- lotta hands on stuff, lotta activities to do (you can dress your child up in all sorts of period costumes available!). Fun times. I'm not sure how long you're around, but its half price on Friday evenings, and free for an hour on wednesday afternoons. Afterwards, you can cross the street to Pho Hung, a dirt cheap and family friendly Vietnamese restaurant. If you think you can traverse the labyrinth menu, you can walk out of the place stuffed for a 25 dollar tab.

As for geekery or interesting shopping, just start at Yonge St. and Bloor and walk downwards to your area. Plenty to see and browse, from old records to fantastic secondhand and rare book places to interesting clothing and furniture choices. Nice selection of comics too over at Grey Region and Million Comixx (and right across that the cheapest Korean place in toronto, Yummy BBQ, that'll get you some authentic Korean flavor for $18 between two people).

I've basically laid out my last two weeks worth of outings for you. Well, that and starbucks. But you have that everywhere.

Enjoy the city!

Thanks! Yeah, we won't be here on Friday.

My daughter is napping, then I think we'll spend the afternoon at the ROM... and then maybe hit up that Vietnamese place... my wife and I love Vietnamese!

For lunch we ate at a nice little French place within walking distance of our hotel, although I forget the name now... it is on King Street.

Also, I should have mentioned that we do have a car... but we're trying to use it as little as possible.

I'm solo with the daughter tomorrow, so maybe I'll that shopping area.

Do lots of places close for the holiday? I was't sure what to expect tomorrow?

Oh, and what would be better comic storewise? Silver Snail or Grey Region/Million Comix if I only have time for one?

Oh man, the holiday. Completely forgot. I think everything is closed except for major malls. Go get your booze now, those are closed too.

Silver Snail's the comic icon- they have the best looking store and displays (enormous Iron Man cutout near the stairs for the second floor, pretty cool Indiana Jones window display currently) and the second floor is almost entirely Star Wars toys. Also a huge selection of indie stuff. Can't go wrong here

Million Comixx/Grey Region nexus is my stop, mainly because of proximity, that they're much friendlier, give free bags/boards on all purchases, have a huge trade section. They are also always discounting their stuff, and have a 20% sale on everything going down right now, if you're looking to spend. Apparently, their manga section cant be beat, but i have no real way of knowing. My brain dose not compute such things.

Going to Comixx on Yonge also gives you the option of crossing the street and getting some very awesome hookahs and bongs though. That might seal it, no?

I really had good Italian food at Alice Fazooli's - they're on 294 Adelaide Street West. Here's the website: http://www.alicefazoolis.com/

Just got back home from Toronto.

Thanks for all the tips! I unfortunately didn't get to use even half of them. Babies are rough!

I am planning to hit up Toronto again some day in the not too distant future, and now that I have a better feel for the place, I'll hopefully get more done (especially with a slightly older child).

I did enjoy Toronto, though, and the weather wasn't completely awful.

Also, people in Toronto didn't stare or make comments when I walked around in shorts and short-sleeve shirts when it was cold out. I get lots of comments in Ohio... yay for polite Torontonians!
