The Andromedia Strain-Ridley and Tony Scott

For a made for cable movie, The Andromeda Strain looks pretty nifty. A&E got this bad boy.

I'm making an effort to at least record this, this weekend. Plus its got Daniel Dae Kim.

ok I just realized I can't spell Andromeda. Forgive me.

I do want to see it, but it sort of worries me with the "action-adventure" vibe they seem to have given to the previews. Not that the book is super-boring, but it's not exactly a mile-a-minute thrill ride.

A&E has been pretty solid with their TV shows. I just hope that translates well into the movie making department.

I loved the 70s movie a bunch, one of my favorite sci-fi films. I'm guessing they are going for more of an active and widespread plague. I wonder if it still came from outer space as in the first movie or are they going to put a "modern" terrorist twist to it.

I'm kinda excited about this. A remake well suited for the format. We'll see.

It's from space. I saw a few scenes of some teens finding the meteor on that horrible "The 20" before Iron Man.

Don't rag on "The 20"! That's where I learned how awesome Serenity would be thanks to the amazing internet fan support!

That was years ago, though. Right now there are two things I want absolutely no part of thanks to "The 20" : The Andromeda Strain and that stupid blue Lexus they pimp every thirty seconds. Seriously, over-saturation at its worst.

Yeah, I moved so I'm no longer seeing movies at AMC theaters so I've not caught 'The 20' in a while. NBC-Universal seems to abuse the crap out of it though. I remember seeing ads for Heroes before it as well.

The best part is that they recap all the advertisements you missed right before the movie starts. You know, in case you were wondering.

Back on topic though, so this is just a 2-parter? Is it in HD? I've got A&E HD so I may TiVo this (since I didn't mind the book too much back when I was in high school). I'll be interested to see what they do with the weird anti-climactic ending that I seem to recall it having.

The original taught me all about how Michael Crichton doesn't know how to end a story.

Yeah, fall off ending happened.

I reckon Robert Wise knew how to make (at least) a halfway decent movie, though.

This new one is from the guy who directed the Rob Lowe version of Salem's Lot, so I'm not expecting much.

Well color me uninterested. What a piece of shit!

It's the filmed version of tap water. I felt like I was back in the ninth grade listening to some fucker read it aloud in class.

Plus, it's damn near four hours long. What the hell?

The show will probably get huge ratings even though it sounds like a big bore.

The advertising is all over the place for this thing.

I'm watching a rerun, and it's just good enough for me to not turn it off, but not good enough to suggest anyone else see it. There has to be an irony somewhere behind Viagra being the cheif sponsor of this showing. I half expect the solution to the strain to be a healthy errection.

Um, the last 20 minutes were terrible. The Chinese Dr. could've very easily just reached into the coolant liquid and grabbed the floating body rather then jump in after it.

Also, Ted Whittall plays the President as half Clinton, half Bush, and not total parts, but single scenes. That was lame.

The story's a bit vague on this front. At first they think it is from outer space, but then there's some wormhole and possible time travel and a conspiracy involving eco-terrorists and a high tech cabal. Its all needlessly complicated and kinda grafted onto the main plot.

Exactly how I felt.

I did get some extra joy from watching the exterior scenes though, we don't get that many films shot in our neck of the woods.

I was in the mood for it so I watched the whole thing, thankfully I have a dvr so I could skip the mandatory commercial every 10 minutes. It just kept getting worse but I wanted to see how it ended.

Lastly what the hell did Christa Miller do to her mouth, it looked bunched up and not in a good way (can't think of a way to make "bunched up" sound positive so that last part may be redundant).

Part one of this miniseries was okay. But it got worse and worse as the last two hours progressed. It was laughable at the end, as I joked out loud to "throw the thumb" - only to see it happen in the movie.

I had the movie on from 7-11, going back and forth between my desktop computer and the TV room. Its pretty bad when I just let the thing play while I was fiddling with my fantasy baseball team; I even have a TV in my computer room, but I was not even compelled to turn it on. I was convinced that I wouldn't miss anything.

I knew the thing was unsaveable when they did a nice 3 minute montage of the three scientists being decontamintaed: was that supposed to be sexy or funny?

I felt and feel the same way about Crichton's stuff. Guy doesn't know how to come up with a decent ending.

I haven't seen this yet but I also noticed how funky her lip looked when I caught her on Jimmy Kimmel's show last week, maybe she had her lips done.

I noticed on Scrubs. She's starting to look like a very strong advertisement against botox.

However not good it was, it was worth it for the dude chopping his own head off with a chainsaw in the first 20 minutes or so.

Yeah, I couldn't believe they'd edit out a few curse words and yet leave in a nice head lopping courtesy of personal chainsaw usage.

"Forgive me, my son, for allowing you to hear someone say 'are you shitting me?' Would a violent suicide-by-decapitation make it up to you?"

I watched the first half of this and found it enjoyable enough. For some reason my TiVo didn't record the second one though so I'm going to have to wait for tomorrow when they air all 4 hours of it to see the 'startling conclusion!'

I had no idea they remade it! Anyway , I found it in a Bargain Bin in my local Supermarket as a 2 DVD Set for £5 ( about $9 ) . From the posts it sounds like it got chopped up a lot with ads - so I guess I was lucky to watch it on DVD instead.

OK , I nearly put it back when I saw Bratt on the cover. He always looks far too pleased with himself whatever he is playing. I think it was worth watching , especially the first part. The tension is nicely ratchetted up , the production values are great for TV and Daniel Kim is in it! There are none of the longeurs that occasionally affected the film - its very well paced.

The second part was ok but lost some impetus. The reporter chase was very formulaic as was the "eradication" by a handful of CGI choppers. What was very disappointing was the "colour-change" effect - it looked so CGI and fake!
The service tunnel sequence was also "seen it a thousabd times" and ( as commented in other post ) the flying thumb was laughable.

MAJOR SPOILER FOLOWS*****************************

Also I concur that the ending was all very rushed. Plus how was the virus gotten out of Wildfire for the twist ending?

Overall , it was very enjoyable and above average for a tV movie. I liked the idea that it is a warning from the future ( was this in the book? ).
