She's really trying to win back her old fanbase. I couldn't be happier.

So this means she's going back to Girly Sound?

I'm a fan of lo-fi...but I've never really been able to get behind that particular sound. I haven't heard much of her newer stuff, though...

I know a big deal has been made of separating female artist's music and their looks around these parts, but holy shit did I used to have mad crush on Phair.

Really dug that album too, but it's been forever since I've listened to it.

I don't think she'll ever go "back" to Girlysound. If you listen to the jump in studio sophistication between Exile In Guyville and 1998's whitechocolatespaceegg (one of the best albums of the '90s, btw...an essential in anyone's record collection), she's pretty much abandoned the rawness of those early lo-fi recordings.

I just want her to get back to what she does best: writing witty, intelligent lyrics wrapped around simple, infectious, impeccable arrangements and her propulsive Fender Duo-Sonic II. So far, all the signs are pointing to a return-to-Phair-form when her new album hits this fall.

*crosses fingers*

I still do. A woman now in her early '40s that looks half her age.

Wow, I wish I could make it to one one those shows.

I found this particularly fascinating, however:

In other news, she's writing the score for the forthcoming CBS show "Swingtown", about swinger couples in 1970s Connecticut.
Go, Liz, go!

Definitely, although I imagine Patrick Bateman's voice as I read this post.

I just read the Pitchfork review of the 15th anniversary. I think I'm ready to defend Liz again, even though I don't think I'll ever listen to Somebody's Miracle. When Exile came out... I was 17, and I liked Nirvana Pearl Jam, and the Talking Heads (with some Clash, and the Stones thrown in the mix), but there was something about Exile that opened a door for me. The independent cinema movement of the 90's can also be tied to the sounds emerging, and the DIY thing- there's a good dotted line from Todd Haynes to Phair to 120 Minutes, to so much in between and it was all becoming a vibrant and exciting thing. I can't imagine being a college radio DJ, and that constant exposure to new music without Phair being that gateway drug. But it was also the time, and what she represented, which was antithetical to most of the pop music scene at the time, even if the through-line of Madonna to whomever X is now (you could even say M.I.A.) makes a pitstop with Phair.

I made a Liz Phair mix tape a few weeks ago, and the only tunes worth listening to from Somebody's Miracle are 'Table For One', 'Got My Own Thing', 'Leap Of Innocence', and 'Closer To You'. 'Table For One', in particular, is one of her best tunes, period.

That new tune she played has potential, and it's growing on me, even in its demo-esque state. She sounds fierce again, which is a great sign.

The first NY Hiro Ballroom show (6-25-08) boot is out. Thanks to taper "woj" and to baudrillard for posting these in the official Liz Phair forum.

The sound quality is fantastic. And the show itself is fuckin' A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. That's no hyperbole. Liz was feeding off the energy and response of the audience, and it just made her performance that much more endearing. It's a historic moment that I'll personally cherish for an eternity.
