Henry Rollins - 'spoken word' gigs

These are seriously funny. Rollins spouts off on everything from politics to his adventures in the gym during the making of ' the Chase' with Charlie Sheen.

'A Rollins in the Wry' is the best one so far. Anyone listened to the latest one?

This thread reminds me that I need to pick up 'Provoked'.

Otherwise, I've got the rest of his stuff and most of it's pretty great.

I've caught him live a number of times, and I love his spoken word schtick.

All props to Rollins and his continued awesomeness, with or without his eponymous band.

One of the first things I did when I moved to Minnesota was finally see Rollins live. It was great. He's gotten better over the years, he's found a nice balace to the serious and funny stuff, which used to kind of battle eachother.

Very true. Listening to Big Ugly Mouth has a glaring example of this - he kicks it off with 'Peach', which is pretty hilarious and then switches to 'Boy On The Train' which is pretty damn depressing, and you can almost hear his momentum with the crowd hit the floor during the end of that bit.

Plus he's gotten much, much more adept at the comic portion as well. I was crying with laughter when he did the bit about Internet Porn on Talk Is Cheap Vol. I album, and I've found myself laughing at and enjoying a lot more of his material, whereas albums like Nights Behind The Tree Line and Everything fall somewhat flat. I'm not sure if the material for those (can't really check Amazon Books right now due to work computer being retarded) was written around the time that Joe Cole was shot, but he seemed even more severely harassed and pissed off on those albums than he was before, and the material was way darker.

My wife thinks Hank the Tank is hawt.

I finally managed to catch him live late last year. He was on for 3 hours, and I could've probably listened to the man speak another 5. He's THAT fucking engaging a speaker, in terms of humor, storytelling, and just enlightening facts.

Most recently, I watched Live In The Conversation Pit, and there's a bit about Hank getting sick on the Trans-Siberian Railroad that actually made my stomach cramp from all the laughing.

The guy's one of my personal heroes.

Do people here watch enough cartoons to know that Rollins was not only the voice, but the inspiration behind one of Batman Beyond's villians? It find that very amusing.

Mad Stan

Hell yes I remember Mad Stan. He was basically a parody of his character in Johnny Mnemonic, which made him even more hilarious than he is on his own terms.

Exactly!
I suppose I should expect as much with someone using the Mad Bomber What Bombs at Midnight (based on Dennis Hopper) to be abreast of cartoon stuff.

Mad Stan
Yeah, there's an amusing anecdote about his "starring role" in those episodes on his Live at Luna Park release.

I've never seen that. To Netflix!

I was actually going to point out that Mad Stan sounds amazingly similar to the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight. But maybe without the snappy quotes ("I got a gimmick baby - HIGH EXPLOSIVES!")
