Croupier (1998)

Good film, and a surprising one coming from Mike Hodges, who has arguably not made a good film since Get Carter in 1971, which is a film that I like, but that hasn't aged wonderfully. Clive Owen essentially got his break (at least in film) as a result of this one, and you can see why - his performance is very nuanced and subtle, and he reminds me especially of Sean Connery in the first couple Bond films. Would of been interesting to have seen him as Bond, but alas it will never happen considering his age (four years Craig's senior, and that's something considering the early complaints about Craig's age). Anyway, the supporting cast really isn't much of a factor, as the whole film revolves around Owen, and rightfully so. Direction wasn't exceptional, but certainly not a fault in the film, as it kind of reminded me of '80s Lumet, in that it was subtle yet still had some pretty unique and/or complicated shots that seemingly came out of nowhere. I'm sure a lot of you have this, but for those of you that haven't, check it out if you get the chance.

One of the things I love about this movie is the implied sense of violence. When I watched it again, there wasn't as much violence as I thought; but it always seems to be simmering under the surface.

Lovely film. Cool and sharp like a straight razor against a sensitive part of the skin.
