Radiohead - The Best Of

I was just thinking the other day how I wish Radiohead had a best-of album. I already own all the songs that will be on it, but it would be nice to have it on a CD (I don't have a burner and I like voting for those guys with my dollar anyway).

There will also be a Quad-Vinyl Box Set for the hardcore.

I'm not sure how keen the band are on this, actually, so this might not be the voting-with-your-dollar situation you might want it to be. EMI is releasing the best-of, and Radiohead declined to participate (just as they did with the box set that came out around the time that In Rainbows did). I'm not sure how royalties would work in this scenario, but it doesn't sound like Yorke and Co. are supporting the release.

Cool move, now I don't have to dig through all the cds for my favs. Plus it will fill in the gaps on some tracks that I am missing.

Personally, I have about four versions of most of the songs on this album, so I have zero use for it. And it seems Bends-heavy. Here would be my Radiohead best of album (directly off my ipod).

Paranoid Android
Karma Police
Idioteque
Planet Telex
Sit Down Stand Up
Creep
Pyramid Song
The National Anthem
Talk Show Host
No Surprises
Wolf at the Door
Exit Music

Looking at that now, it seems woefully inadequate. As any Radiohead best of would be. No B sides, no In Rainbows, and maybe not enough Bends. Radiohead has too many good songs for a best of. Just get any of their albums.

Dave is right -- this and the previous box release were moves that EMI announced after the band left the label. They timed the box set with the release of In Rainbows, and this Best Of with their tour, to make some money off the band's post-EMI work.

They're legally entitled to do this, of course, but yeah, the band has come out and said they're against these releases.

Label shenanigans aside, Radiohead is one of those bands where I can't imagine listening to songs outside of the context of the album. Have I? Sure, I've put on particular songs, but I almost view their discography as a linear story -- looking at the tracklist, the Best Of order seems downright crazy to me.

Well dang. Now I'm all conflicted.

Download it. Screw EMI, those money grubbing bastards!

It's not the download. It's the CD. I guess I'll just have to upload my songs and then put them on a burner.

How can you not have a burner, Matt?

I expected better of you, young man.

I was thinking the same thing. They come in all computers. They will probably be included in Happy Meals soon.

I guess this would be a good starting point for someone not familiar with Radiohead, but other than that it strikes me as pointless (not for the record label of course).

I've found in my experience that there are Radiohead fans that own the majority of the their albums and then there are people that think "creep is teh awesome!".

I've made my share of Radiohead mixes that I'd enjoy more than this set any day. Creep in between Karma Police and No Surprises is an awful choice.

These days you can probably find a burner that wouldn't cost much more than the CD.

Can I be both? Because I am (if you jettison the leet speak).

I have to admit that they've geared this pretty well toward the pop Radiohead fan; that demographic who liked the singles or maybe who couldn't follow them past Kid A. Out of 16 tracks, 11 are from the first three albums, which are far more accessible. The remaining tracks are the most traditional and pop-centric of their later releases (with the possible exception of "Everything In Its Right Place," although its placement at the end almost makes it seem like a coda to the set).

The selection creates an alternate history for the band in which they slightly changed their style, but remained essentially a somewhat idiosyncratic rock band, rather than evolving into the more adventurous unit they are. A pop fan who remained oblivious to their activities after "Creep" or "Fake Plastic Trees" (I'm sure they exist) could buy this and be satisfied, yet still be completely taken aback listening to Kid A all the way through for the first time.

I wish they'd approach this more like an album, despite the notion that is a "best of" as the name applies. I'd like to see something that could work as a cohesive whole, not necessarily remixing all the tracks, but finding a way to glue them together like George Martin did with that Beatles LOVE album. And some of the B-sides would've been nice - sure "Killer Cars" or "The Amazing Sounds of Orgy" aren't show-stoppers, but this would be the perfect place to put songs like that since they didn't full-length LPs to call home.

I might buy this CD just so I can stick it on the shelf with the rest (I'm a completest).

I already have all the discs(sans Pablo Honey) so I'll just make my own.

I'm sure Interscope Records is working on one of these for Nine Inch Nails as we speak. As soon as the major label no longer has the band/artist, it's often the best time* for the cash-in.

*Well, second best. The best time is when the artist croaks, sadly.

You can say that without leet speak? Learn something new every day.

DaveB said what I meant to say with tact.

That is the sort of thing that would get me to purchase the disc, even if it were a bonus disc with b-sides and EP tracks. I own just about the all the EPs, and have downloaded other tracks, but would appreciate having a lot of them in one place with CD quality sound.

This just means the fella who lived in the dorm room next to mine during Freshman year will finally get a Radiohead CD. That guy loved him some greatest hits CDs. They are, literally, all he owned. His reasoning was "they put all the good songs on the greatest hits CDs. I don't need all the fluff on the regular albums."

A myriad of dick punches is the only logical punishment for thinking like that.
