I did a search, but I didn't see a thread for Brian's latest article, so I thought I would start one up.

I've often said that within the framework of Wood's ridiculous opus is the germ of a pretty decent big-budget horror flick about aliens re-animating the dead to take over the world. Looks like Brian sort of agrees with me. Hopefully this will turn out more awesome than stupid.

With this seeming an inevitability, I'm glad we're not getting a comedy version of it. Plan 9 only works as a comedy, because it doesn't know its a comedy. In my mind there would be only two ways to make this, dead serious (like Wood himself intended) or a comedy with better talent in front and behind the camera. It would be nice to see a fully realized version of the film in honor of the 50th anniversary.

I really love the original. First of all, it's a wonderfully absurd concept. Secondly it's so thoroughly, consistantly "bad' it really does turn into some kind of stylized piece of pop art (ALL of Burton's films reflect Wood's influence). But as the article mentions, what makes it work is how seriously Wood approaches the material. If this were remade with even the hint of intentional camp, it would be a failure. Playing it straight is the only way to go. BUT, in order for that to work you need it to be a gloriously retarded mega-budget Michael Bay affair.

I agree with you, but I'm betting on the latter as far as the final product goes on the rehash.

Too bad Bruno Mattei is dead, he would have been the perfect director for this.

Remaking Plan 9 is almost as stupid as being named John Johnson.

Sid Haig for the Tor Johnson role!

I'm being serious too by the way.

but one thing he was not was boring and unoriginal
Yeah, but didn't he make a movie almost entirely out of stock footage?

I just finished working as a zombie extra on John Johnson's most recent film - Skeleton Key 3. I posted a pic of myself in make-up about a month ago.

I was wondering if the movie sites would pick this news item up, since Darkstone is a small, Charlottesville Virginia-based film company, I thought this might get overlooked.

I think Johnny might be able to pull this off. I've seen his flicks at Horrorfind in Baltimore every year (that's how I started working with him on a couple of his projects) for the past few years and he's got the self-awareness of how cheap and corny his flicks are down pat. His movies aren't masterpieces, but they are pretty funny and fun to watch. He has no qualms about making fun of himself or his movies in the films themselves. And if he's going to take this one seriously, he may actually end up with the same result Wood did, which could be a good thing.

Crap. Now I sound like a shill. Don't ban me!
