Ninja Gaiden 2 - Page 2

God, this game just BEGS for custom soundtracks. Nothing like jump kicking the heads off of werewolves while the long version of the 'Power Rangers' theme plays. It's both super nerdy and oddly appropriate.

Some of the later bosses are surprisingly easy. I took Volf down in one try. His scythe in the ultimate weapon. You're pretty unstoppable with it.

The more I play, the more I think the difficulty is horribly unbalanced across the game. Most of the bosses are very easy. Then theres shit like the Armadillo, which will kill you after you've killed him if you don't think to block. Cheap as fuck.
Maybe you didn't think to block because both your character and the boss were hidden behind a door because of the camera. I played the demo and, while it's fun to chop limbs and stuff, it is the opposite of fun to babysit the camera while I'm surrounded by bad-ass ninjas hellbent on separating me from my head.

I also wonder if Itagaki is the ultimate example of a man-child. I mean, even for a demo, this thing is tits-and-goreapalooza.

Rented this. Can't beat the level three boss. Considering restarting on Acolyte just so can maybe finish the damn thing. Good solid fun, glad I rented it.

Objectively, I know the camera is bad. It was a big point in the review I just wrote. But personally, I'm not as bothered by it as I thought I would be.

I've had a lot of conversations about game cameras with developers and journalists in the past week, in part because of things that came up at Capcom's event. I find that compared to other people, I ride the camera constantly in some games (GTA4 is a big recent example) to get the POV where I want it. NG2 really isn't that different. The camera here is certainly more aggressive in moving where it wants to go (i.e. looking right at Ryu instead of his enemies) but between keeping a thumb on the right stick and popping the right trigger occasionally I have a handle on it.

(And the Armadillo is super-cheap. You 'kill' it, then it explodes. If you don't block, you die and have to do the battle over. Very very lame.)

Not to derail too far, but the GTAIV vehicle camera is screwed for me. The zoomed-out mode is too far and the zoomed-in mode is too close. I'm constantly holding the right stick slightly north of center to get the right angle on the road. On foot, no problems unless I'm trying to lock on a guy right around the corner I'm covering behind. I hope whatever camera issues you had at the Capcom event weren't related to RE5. Based on RE4, the camera system finally works with the controls. It'd be a bummer for that to get borked again.

Anyway, that Armadilllo blast sounds cheap as hell. Especially when every other boss explosion in the history of video games has no effect on your character.

Same thing in my experience, but is it a problem? Never was for me; I've always had to ride the camera in GTA somewhat, and the action is now second nature for me. I'm not distracted by having to control the camera. Doing so is simply part of the game, or how I play it at least. Considering opposite extremes, I'd rather be constantly controlling the lens than be shoved into a fixed perspective. Same thing in NG2.

(And re: Capcom and cameras, no not RE5. The conversation was born from talking about GTA and NG2 actually, but then continued into Bionic Commando. Some of it shows up in my Bionic Commando interview I posted here last week.)

I'm the same way; I'm always adjusting the camera. What bother me about NG2's is, as you said, it's really aggressive. You bump it up and it snaps right back into a tight shot of Ryu's back. Sometimes I wish you could lock it into place. Still, between the right stick and the right trigger I'm having a much less difficult time that I thought I would.

Thanks for the heads up about the armadillo boss--when I get there I'll remember to block.

So I'm interested in knowing everyones weapon(s) of choice. I'm a big fan of the dual katanas, falcon claw, and scythe (which seems a tad overpowered)

As in the first game, I usually stick to the Dragon Sword. The Flying Swallow (is that what the jumping dash attack is called?) is just too useful of a move to give up. Still, I do like the Lunar Staff quite a bit, and I've found it especially handy for tight spaces with lots of fiends. I'm not too fond of the Falcon Claw so far; I did pay to upgrade it, however, despite the fact I hardly ever use it.

Oh my god super fuck this game on Chapter 8. Fucking multi-rocket douchebags and large mechademons, all of which conspire simultaneously to hit you from off-camera with no audio or visual warning, break your block, interrupt your combo and obscure your view? FUCK THAT.

Seriously, fuck that.

I want to love this game. The majesty of whirling around and shredding limbs with a giant fucking scythe while Zero plays is action gaming-bliss.

But oh my god super-fuck this game on Chapter 8 (Warrior difficulty). Fucking respawning multi-rocket douchebags and large mechademons, all of which conspire simultaneously to hit you from off-camera with no audio or visual warning, break your block, interrupt your combo and obscure your view? FUCK THAT.

Seriously, fuck that.

I downloaded the demo and everything I liked was completely overpowered by the horrible camera. I played through the whole thing, got to be pretty decent with combos and then realized it was worthless to get good with combos because playing this game would make me violent trying to keep that camera under control.

As I was playing my memory floated back to Super Mario 64 and I remember one particular jump that I tried over and over. I'd run on the top of a castle and had to jump off at a particular angle. Right as I reached the spot where I'd jump the camera would spin around by itself and I'd fail the jump over and over. I realized that this simple jump had been made insanely difficult not because of anything I would consider fair, but something that was either horrible programming or a horrible idea to handicap the player.

Ninja Gaiden would be like playing that jump over and over.

I always wonder if I sound this insane whenever I defend a game I like that has major problems.

"No, see, the camera is supposed to be completely fucked! It's the developers commentary on how we as a society are never in control of what the media tells us. It's fucking BRILLIANT (and not shitty game design at all)!
Got this game yesterday. And its good fun but yeah... the camera is broken.

Also (maybe its just be in the first level) I'm finding it hard to discern where I am in between all the enemies. I'm black.. my enemies are dark grey.. its night time, I kinda just get lost in the midst of all the gore and flying limbs.

Not even gonna bother playing this on anything but easy. I'm just weak, I know.

I just beat it on Warrior and am heading back in on Mentor with some new costumes.

I just beat this one on Acolyte, and now moving up to the next dificulty level...also beat DMC4 on medium dificulty this weekend too, so Ill also step up the next level of challenge on that one.
Both were great experiences, minus some small issues...got only one framerate slowdown in NG2, though there were dozens of enemies onscreen that one time.
Also, I gotta ask: Does anyone else's 360's fan/drive act at its loudest while playing this game? Mine sounds like a jet engine with NG2 running, and its a fairly new model.

Higher difficulty levels upgrade the enemy types. So instead of fighting ninjas at the start, you're fighting incendiary ninjas and bazooka troops.

Oh well that's fun, isn't it?

I'm not even half way through the game yet; I need to pick up the pace.

I kept waiting for my console to lift off while fighting the Armadillo boss.

I actually have had multiple slow-downs while playing-- one while killing the endless hordes of bone scorpions prior to killing the bone giant boss, one while fighting tactical ninjas in a small corridor with bazooka ninjas peppering me with rockets, and one while fighting the Armadillo.

Weird, mine's very loud all the time, but I only experienced slowdown in the small corridor/army of ninjas battle.
Also, after clearing chapter 3 in Warrior, count me in on the hate for the electrical flying fish boss....fuck that thing.
I was actually surprised about the slowdown during the Armadillo fight. It might have something more to do with my particular console than anything else. Though perhaps the "enrage" phase of the fight where he's glowing orange and constantly farting out meteors is more demanding on frame rate than the rest of the fight.

I wasn't surprised about the slowdown during the bazooka group-fuck in the tiny corridor. That was the hardest "boss" in the game. Stuff like that is very, very annoying. I also wasn't surprised about the slowdown during the skeletal scorpion fight just due to the sheer numbers.

And yes, fuck the flying electrical fish thing. Though I preferred fighting that to Genshin (for the first time).

I should note that my 360 is almost always loud when playing, it just so happened that it was at it's loudest during the Armadillo fight.
I haven't experienced any slowdown yet or atleast I didn't notice it. Currently hacking werewolves in Venice at the moment and as much as I liked the Dragon Sword I find I need to use the Lunar Staff against them. They're too tough and can roll thru my attacks to hammer the hell out of me. The staff can atleast break up their attacks.
And to hell with the water courses in that level. It's painful to go thru and no fun at all.

I also must suck at this game cos I haven't been able to upgrade my weapons at all yet. All my cash has been spent stocking up on healing herbs and stuff.

Upgrade the Dragon Sword ASAP. Each increase in level gives you an additional hit with the Flying Swallow attack and that may be the most useful move in the game.
Flying swallow is about the only move i do about 90% of the time. Alittle bit of hope of actually beating this game flickers alive everytime i get a 1-hit decap on a guy. Problem is i still suck, so i cant save up the 30k to upgrade the sword again. Are there any spots where you can revist and the enemys will respawn? I just started chapter 4 and just to chim in on it all....fuck that metal worm. It was such an awesome idea to have a insta kill attack fired directly with a near unavoidable attack that juggles you in one spot.

I don't know of any spots with respawing enemies. The Tests of Valor can certainly yield lots of essence, but they're also hard as hell. Keep in mind that the essence you get from killing an enemy depends on how you kill them. Flying Swallow is super-useful (especially in a pinch) but it doesn't really give you much of a return. I'd suggest getting really familiar with 2 or 3 of the combos and start working those in. The Dragon Sword has some wicked moves that leave enemies in pieces, usually bumping up your karma score and giving you a bigger chunk of essence. Also, the walls are your friends, and the blocking roll/dash is the best move in the game.

Speaking of Tests of Valor, fuck that fifth one. Machine Gun Ninjas, Bazooka Ninjas, AND giant robot fiends; yeah, fuck you. Also fuck it because after all that you get a devil gem and a box full of ghost fish. That test is an asshole.

I think I may have found a place with respawning enemies. You know the area with a big pile of bones where you had to make your way up after fighting that massive skeletal boss? Well that area you can respawn those skeleton scorpions again in those corridors if instead of flipping your way up out of the caves, you drop straight down all they way to where you fought the boss. Make your way up again and you'd see those damn scorpions again but not the, I don't know what to call them, bladed spiny snake things?
I did it as many times as I could until I was nearly dead and I came out of it with enough cash to max out the Dragon Sword, upgrade the twin swords and purchase a life essence. So I guess if you're better at the game than me you could easily max out everything if you spend enough time there doing that.
I'm making my way through this game, and I'm enjoying it much the same way I enjoyed the first one. It's one of the best action games around, but I don't think I can stomach any more cut scenes. This has got to be some of the dumbest shit I've ever seen. It's like watching Heavy Metal without the soundtrack. Or a bong.
