The Kid nears 600

Have I just not been paying attention, or has the coverage on Ken Griffey Jr's approach to this milestone been relatively silent?

The fanfare has been fairly quiet. I was thinking about it the other day when they mentioned it on ESPN, and came to the odd realization that the man would end up with 600+ homeruns, yet the first word that comes to mind when you say Ken Griffey, Jr to me is "disappointment".

It took him like a month to get one home run, at this pace it'll be the end of the season before he hits 600.

Ah, what could've been...

That reminds me of the quote about Mickey Mantle - "the guy has a career that puts him up as maybe one of the 10 best players in the game's history, and people talk about how good he COULD have been."

That is a great quote. It is hard not to think that, when at one time Griffey was either the best player in baseball or second best (Bonds was taking that title around that time). Then injuries set in and he became mediocre. You always wonder what could have been if he stayed healthy and consistent.

He just hit 599 in the first. A few weeks back Pie took back a HR on a great over the fence catch. That HR would have been 599.

This is the type of end career Bonds should have had.

He's still a first-ballot HOFer. Which none of the steroid-era guys will be.

Jeter and Manny are probable clean first ballot-ers.

Steroid-era as in "those brought under question of using steroids," sorry if I was unclear. And to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if Jeter had to wait a year or two. When it's all said and done, people are going to start looking at his career numbers in a vacuum and compare them to other SSs in the hall like Ripken and Yount.

Average season:
.....................................AVG HR RBI OBP SLG ........TOP TEN IN MVP
Yount (over 20 seasons) .285 ...14 ... 80 ...342 ...430 ......2 (2 wins)
Ripken (over 21 seasons) .276 ... 23 ... 91 ...340 ...447 ......3 (2 wins)
Jeter (over 14 season) .316 ... 17 ... 82 ...387 ...460 ......6 (0 wins)

Just sayin'.

Griffey and Jeter will be first ballot. Jeter's numbers will be solid, and he has those world series wins. Plus he is ultra-hyped by the New York media, hell, all the sports media. The thing with Griffey was that he went from possible all time best, to just a hall of fame member. That is till a great accomplishment, but not what it looked like it would be in those carefree, fun Seattle days.

Also, Jeter has remained scandal-free while ALSO being balls-deep in every chick on the planet.

And that is no hype !

Yeah, I suppose if he was up for the same Hall of Fame as Wilt Chamberlain, then he would be first-ballot.
