Plissken - yeah, I'm new to Bava, and it was a great introduction. What that era lacks in acting it MORE than makes up for with tone - amazing set design considering it was a freakin' soundstage in 1960. Totally underlines the argument against complete CGI sets.

Thursday 11/17/11: The Great Silence

Fantastic write-up!

It's an incredible movie, and in a league of it's own. It's got a winter setting, and a surprise ending. Those 2 alone set it apart from other Spaghetti westerns.

I've seen the alternate ending on the dvd that I own (really wish they put out another one that's anamorphic). It's got a commentary on it by Alex Cox. It really makes no sense. Silence shows up with some kind of metal glove thing on his ruined hand, as does a certain other character that got killed before the end of the movie, and he helps out Silence. Cox even mentions that it makes no sense.

Loved the write up, Shawn!

My god is Lulu awful.  I'm a huge Metallica fan and I had to FORCE myself to finish the whole thing.  Like I said beneath the article, thank heavens they still have a normal album coming out next year.

Yeah, I dropped out of the metallica thing shortly after the black album, which I'll admit is a fine example of a big-budget, big-producer  rock album, and also the only sane follow-up to the technical insantiy of ...And Justice For All. But I've never thought anything they've had a hand in has been as extremely laughable and inherently dispisable as this lulu thing. You're dedication and force of Will is commendable if You made it through the entire album, half of one song and I was on the ground, alternately laughing hysterically and just barely pushing back the bile (although the bile was no doubt more to the veritable death of lou reed before my very eyes. But good for him I guess - he's clearly thinking about the prospects of an old rock and roller retiring in this economy).

Always love to read your comments sir.

Oh, I definitely had to do it in multiple sittings.  There is no way I could stomach that all at once.  That said, I hope someone puts out a fan edit with all of the vocals removed.........cause some of the music itself isn't bad.

What I love about the first four films in the franchise is that fact that each entry his its own unique auteuristic vision.  The same can definitely not be said for the two AVP things.  Thankfully Prometheus aims to get things back on track.

While I don't love it as much as the others, I completely agree that Resurrection is underrated.  The scenes you describe involving the Newborn disturbed me when I saw it in theaters.  Now that I'm a father, they disturbed me EVEN MORE.  I've seen that "seeking approval" look, as well as the look of betrayal (though over nothing anywhere near as severe, obviously) from my own child.  They absolutely fucking nailed those looks and kudos to the FX department for doing so.

I've been looking for an excuse to dive back into this franchise again and you've just given it to me.  It looks like I'll be rewatching all of them at least TWICE before Prometheus hits theaters.

Plissken - as always I LOVE to hear Your input. The idea that once You became a Father and the newborn's scenes affected you that much more - pretty much tells me what I always thought and you perfectly said - Kudos to that FX dept.

And yes, I love the fact that each of the first four films are indeed unique to the creator's visions.

Thursday, 12/29/11: My Top Five Albums of 2011

Sounds like I'll have to give some of those a look.  On the whole, 2011 has been a pretty damn disappointing year for me in terms of music.  It's an "in between" year for most of my favorite artists, many of which had releases last year and will again in 2012.

Monday 1/02/12: My Top Films of 2011

I love films 1-4 on the list...............and still need to see Martha, Tinker, and The Artist.  I have a feeling I'm going to love the first two.......and probably the other as well.

I'll be posting another installment of my own list soon, with the final "Top Films of 2011" list likely arriving towards the latter half of the month.  I have too many films at my fingertips left to watch before I feel comfortable tossing one up just yet.
