I just wrote about discovering Black Flag as a youth. Kinda' just now - pretty wild to read your musings immediately thereafter. I found Black Flag in 1986 - about six seconds after they broke up.
It's funny that the punkers are supposed to be so..."whatever" about shit, but every deviation from what they see as the playbook causes them unbelievable pain. Black Flag was accused of "selling out" over Process and Family Man (the A side was Rollins' spoken word - B side was instrumental). Ginn and Henry were often quoted as wondering - "if we 'sold out' - where's the money?"
