Bubba Ho-Tep discussion

Well it was released this past weekend. I saw it yesterday, and I loved it. It's a fun film from beginning to end, that will have you laughing all the way through.

Anybody else see it yet?

Saw it when it showed here in Oregon. Dug the fuckin' hell out of it. A great, subtle, well-made film. Bruce Campbell rocks! Great score, great cinematography, really nice (and original-looking) lighting, and of course the script was grand.

And gotta love Bubba and his bored writings on the bathroom stall wall. "Cleopatra does the nasty."

Really looking forward to seeing this..hope it live up to the hype.

I caught the tail end of "Fresh Air" on NPR radio last week and there was an
interview going on with Don Coscarelli discussing
"Bubba Ho Tep" and "Phantasm."

At the end, the host asks Don what's
next and he responds that right now he's just been
focused on promoting "Bubba" and getting it out there for people to see and in the theatres. But he says he and Bruce Campbell have discussed sequels if the film makes any money. "You can take 'bubba' and put any monster name on the back and you've got a movie." He discusses "Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She Vampires" which would have Elvis vs. She Vampires or "Bubba
Sasquatch" which would have Elvis vs an army of killer Bigfoots.

I haven't seen the first yet, but I'd pay to see the Chin fight she-vampires and Bigfoots

Um, what became of the Coscarelli interview for the Creature Corner?

This flick deserves much love.

EDITED BCAUSE MY COMPUTER CRASHED AFTER I WROTE THIS BEAUTIFULLY LITERATE REVIEW......nOw it's 2 beers later and i can ONLy staTE wHat'S important:

I enjoyed it while I saw it, but it's really the fact that, days later, the damn thing sticks with me. I read the Lansdale story years ago and the film really captures his voice (get thee to thine bookstore if ye have ne'r read Lansdale.....he's all over the map genre-wise...which is a good thing, trust me).

Campbell gives a godamn fine DRAMATIC performance. I was surprised...you might be too. Coscarelli manages a unique blend of comedy and pathos...reminded me of the peculiar depth of the first PHANTASM film (I found depth in PHANTASM, anyway..something affected me).

I can't call it horror, but it is good and DIFFERENT than anything else you're likely to see this year. In my retrospect, it's shaping up as one of the most memorable movies I've seen this year.

I can't wait for this one. Read the Lansdale story (The Writer of the Purple Rage for those of you who would support Mr. Lansdale via www.amazon.com or another of your favorite literature establishments) (Ahem) years ago, and it's stuck with me ever since.

I've already been on the phone with a local indie theater in the city and told the guy to watch for this one. I have high hopes it'll show up in central Mass soon. I mean, this is the same theater that managed to get ahold of Cronenberg's Spider for me six weeks or so before it hit DVD.

It is soooooo good. I loved it. Triumphant and touching and funny. Betrayed by its budget at times, but still very excellent.

I saw this movie well over a year ago during that San Diego con. I remember that it was one of the funnest films I've seen. The Chain really is at is beat in this. I wish it was playing somewhere near me so I could see it again.

Very nice Coscarelli interview, guys. Thanks.

Best of all, THIS quote:

"The next tier [for theatrical releases] has got to be Boston, D.C., Kansas City, Denver…"

Yes. Oh please, yes.

Great interview. Dying to see this film.

Just a heads up for any Toronto dwellers, Bubba Ho-Tep is going to be playing this weekend at the Paradise Theatre. Friday to Sunday only. I am freakin' psyched! Probably going to be the only chance to catch it in theatres.

for Toronto Dwellers

I went to the Saturday show at the Royal and it was incredible! I lucked out and saw it last year at the festival, but it was so much better watching it this time.

I was there 30mins before show time to buy a ticket and I wasn't even sure I was going to get a seat, the place was packed! And it was great. When I was waiting outside, surrounded by other people who really wanted to see this movie, I was overcome with joy. I felt so happy that this movie is in such demand that there was a chance I wouldn't be able to see it that night.

The screening itself was great. The entire audience was into it. AND, they played the trailer for Krull before Bubba started! Good times.

only real problem with the movie is the up close shots of old elvis, you can realy tell the make-up was laid on thick

but this one great movie, saw twice when it came to alabama, it just gets better on the second viewing for me

I raised holy hell because this movie didn't come to Pittsburgh, but when it FINALLY did show there I couldn't make it! Damnit.

I'm dying for this to hit DVD.

Caught this in Philly last week. Definitely glad I got to see it in a theater. Great little flick. A lot more dick jokes than you would expect from an Elvis & JFK vs. A Cowboy Mummy movie.

the black nurse was kinda hawt

loved how the movie wasn't just about the mummy.....but the elderly as well

lovely movie

Much love for this film. I'm a big fan of the original Phantasm, and I've always enjoyed Coscerelli's visual style. My son, who is 14, made me take him to see Bubba twice; he was that impressed by it. Personally, I think Bruce Campbell should have received some recognition from the folks in Oscar Land for his performance. It was touching and funny, and didn't seem in the least bit forced. He actually made you care about his character. Ozzie Davis was wonderful as well, and the two played off each other brilliantly. To be honest, when I first heard about the plot for Bubba I thought it could never work: Let's see, an aging Elvis and his black companion (who just happens to believe he is JFK) save a rest home from an evil mummy. Uh-huh. However, Coscerelli pulled off. The thing I most appreciate about this film is its originality. It was truly a breath of fresh air amongst all the cliched Hollywood offerings. I'll definitely be picking this one up on DVD.

Agreed! I FINALLY got to see it last night! Awesome! The funny thing was trying to explain to my girlfriend what the movie was about as we headed down to see it. She was not impressed with the plot synopsis ...but... she loved it. Pure fun!

What really surprised me was the music as well! I thought the music was great, set the mood perfectly, and kicked ass at all the right moments.

I ordered the DVD this week, and just watched it. God, do I love this film. Bruce and Ossie and fantastic.

I can't even express how much I loved it. I'm a fan of Lansdale's but hadn't read this story. Bruce Campbell finally gets to show his chops without snappy one liners and the film has a depth that is rare in the horror genre. These are big words but I feel Coscarelli has finally made a film that equals Phantasm. Lansdale's voice is all over it, which is never bad. It's a nice little gem of a movie, and it sticks with you.

I picked up the DVD back in August. Great movie, and so damn respectful to the Lansdale story.
