The Pixies: what am I missing? - Page 3

Excellent news! Thanks for the post, Raz.

Shit. Both Olympia gigs sold out!

That's my plan banjaxed then. Something tells me they won't be making it up here.

Yeah, there's pretty much no way sales for these didn't blow up the moment the notification went out. The obvious having now been stated, I loaded "Last Splash" and "Pod" onto my mp3 player earlier this week, and I'll be damned if those still don't hold up really, really well. I initially bought those albums, gave them a couple of listens, and set them by the wayside, so it was a nice little treat to queue those up and get blown away.

I managed to get tickets for the last of the Brixton shows this morning. Should be great! I saw them at Alexandra Palace a few years back and loved every minute.

Before that Pixies tour in the fall, FB is touring through my local neighborhood summerfest. $5 bucks to see one of my favorite artists? I don't care if its gonna be a madhouse (or that it won't also be the Catholics), that shit is fucking stellar. Hopefully after the Pixies hit Europe, they'll play in the US again. I missed them the first time through and I completely regret it.

Yeah, it's pretty miserable, Bobby. I was late getting onto Ticketmaster, but Apparently bought nights sold out in a couple of minutes anyway.

That makes me feel a little better about being too shattered to fathom anything other than sleep and lying down during those moments between 9 and 2/3 minutes past 9. The preceding sentence is a hyperbole-free zone.

Okay, I feel (only very) slightly better about the US not getting any Pixies dates. Apparently they're only doing tracks off Doolittle and its respective b-sides for that record's 20th anniversary.

Thanks for the advise regarding Francis solo career. St. Francis Dam Disaster (Dog in the Sand) is IMO one of the best songs ever.

Grand Duchy is Black Francis' new band with his wife. As is typical for his post-Pixies work, its at once familiar and new. (Instead of obtuse Spanish lyrics, this time its French.) The prominent female vocals recall Kim Deal in spirit if not in sound. The drummer/programming recalls David Lovering's tight dance-friendly beats in many places. The droning synth parts don't really remind me of anything from the Frank Black solo albums.

If I were to sum it up with a few words, the album is a collection of solid pop tunes, with a distinctly darkish new wave kind of edge. And after my first few listens, some of them are pretty great.

Ok, there's one bass line that sounds just like Gigantic and it makes me wonder wtf they were thinking, but for the most part this is a cool new territory for the guy.

A follow-up to my previous post, if anyone's interested...

The album is quickly becoming my favorite of the recent releases under the Black Francis moniker. The songwriting is a nice mix between his and his wife's. The production is fantastic (which is an admitted weak spot even on the Pixies records,) Arguably this record sounds better than any previous of Charles Thompson's records.

The album might be too mellow or sweetly pop for most rock fans, but considering that much softer music is getting to be so popular, this should fit in with the current flavor. Personally, when the songs are this good, I don't care.

That's coming right on the heels of my vacation, damnit. Time to grow that Money Tree!

Funny cause it's true, too. We still have a few months to go, but Pavement reunion is shaping up to be my 'rock disappointment' for the year. Sheesh, that was one unexciting gig.

I've heard a few people say that, and I have to say I don't get it. I know I wasn't at your show, but I thought they were incredible. Loud, engaging, great set list. What else were people expecting, exactly? Fireworks? Pyrotechnics? They're Pavement, not Kiss.

My only experience with Pavement live is seeing them right before they split up and it had to be one of the worst concerts I've ever seen. Granted that was obviously a terrible time to see them, but even in their prime they had a reputation for being really hit or miss live. It always sounded like if Malkmus was having an off day he'd just phone it in.

I saw one of their reunion shows a few months ago and it was great. Maybe it's because they had played in their hometown the night before, but they had a lot of energy and really engaged with the crowd. And Gary Young was there! He spent the first half of the set wandering around the stage, but he played some "Slanted and Enchanted" songs towards the end of the show.

God that would have been awesome. I'd love to see Pavement put on a good show. Much like the Pixies I kind of wrote of ever getting to see them live, but the Pixies came around are now fantastic live. If Pavement comes back to Seattle and isn't part of a festival I'll give them another shot.
