The EURO 2008 - Page 3

Got some good neutral Belgian beer and some good neutral pizza. I'm ready.

I never thought I'd say it, but no England made the tournament that much better of an experience for me. It just shows how shite we really are, and how far we have to go. Hopefully Capello might actually make a difference, but I'm not holding out that much hope.

Gotta be Spain tonight, if the Germans win after their mediocre performances throughout it will be a damn shame. Gutted that Villa isn't able to play though.

(I can't believe there's no football thread on here other than this!)

Arrgh, can't believe Spain one off that [what I think] lucky Torres move.

I was gunnin' for Germany! Hell, I was hoping for at least more than a 1-0 score. Thought we were in for a 3-3, followed by penalty shootout situation.

:'(

Oh well, will have to wait till South Africa...

Returned from a committee meeting to see the final three minutes. Ugh. So in a nutshell, what did I miss?

Mugatu, we have an MLS thread.

Germany looked like 11 guys trying to play their own individual games. Spain was one team, playing one way.

The final. Eh, sub-par first half, with Torres getting a goal gifted from Lehmann. Probably the weakest defense I've ever seen from Germany, and they deserved to lose. Ballack might be one of the bigger disappointments of the tournament, although Gomez is clearly the winner of that one.

The second half was better, with Spain turning on the style at the end. And Villa's absence didn't matter, as Senna is clearly the most important man in their squad. An understated role, but player of the tournament nonetheless, as I don't think he put a foot wrong in any of the games he was in.

It was a pretty good tournament overall. Congratulations to Spain -- I think the best team truly did win.

This was such a fun tournament.

Took me some days to sober out and come back to this thread though. We have been lucky against Turkey. They put up hell of a fight and I would not have mind if they would have succeeded to the final. But Linekers Law applies more often than not.

But Congratulation to Spain. They absolutely deserved this title. Apart from being the overall best team of the tournament they played the most sophisticated football as well. Though the final was a rather boring game, they surely showed the Kraut-team their boundaries. There was not really a chance for us to even the score. As bad as it must feel for players like Ballack two always end up second this one was deserved.

But thanks to the team for delivering such a great tournament performance, coming up with awesome skills by Podolski et al and just for another summer late night tale of soccer. Now it is time for Bundesliga, Premier League and Champions League again. Thanks to all of you for your input and participation!(Any interest in an comparative football-thread around these parts maybe?).

Once again: Viva Espana! See you again 2010 in South Africa!

I thought the final was damn entertaining myself. Amazing tournament overall, and yeah the lack of England helped it massively. England being there would have meant no Russia and everything that equation would have brought with it.

I'm definitely up for a football thread once the Premiership is up and going, to include discussion of the cups, Champions League etc with me wittering on about the Championship because my beloved Charlton are spending another year in that league!

I can't believe we don't have a CONCACAF thread. Guatemala scares me in the next round.

Agreed. We need a World Cup thread in the fall, especially with the Euro qualifying firing up in the first week of September.

And frankly, all the US has to do is finish second in their group and they're good. Just win the home games and on the road against Cuba.

I've never really gotten into soccer before this year - but I watched damn near the entire tournament and got instantly hooked. I don't know enough to know anybody's name (except Christiano Ronaldo - but mainly because I watched the MAN U/Chelsea final awhile back and was already familiar with him). But I gotta say - that final was not entertaining. That may be because I REALLY wanted Holland or Portugal to win and they both got knocked out unceremoniously after STELLAR previous games.

And they say over here that no-one in the US likes soccer! Definitely up for a English Premiership thread if there's enough interest. Or just European leagues!

The final was excellent, and I'm so glad the better, far more interesting team won it.

I opened an all-out EUROPEAN FOOTBALL thread covering all leagues and tournaments for you to participate. I think a general thread will be better for discussion on an international board like this one. Feel free to trash talk the Bundesliga or whatever you want!

Let the games begin.

Ouch. I've got a soft spot for Oxford though, have done since they dumped Leeds out of the FA Cup.
