Please elaborate. And I played Saints Row for at least another ten hours after beating it because there was more fun stuff to complete, unlike GTA IV which had...pigeons.

I think you're giving GTA too much credit because it was the progenitor of this kind of game and you're overlooking GTA IV's obvious faults while not recognizing what "Saints Row" did right and how it expanded on GTA's gameplay. Everytime I jacked a car with someone in it in GTA IV, I was a little bummed I didn't have the option to take them hostage like I did in "Saints Row".

"Saints Row 2" has every right to point out GTA IV's weaknesses. The question is whether "Saints Row 2" can back up their mockery with a good game.

Probably because we don't agree with you that it's mediocre.

I didn't play Bioshock anymore after I beat it. That's got nothing to do with its quality.

All great points.

Alex, you're just wrong. I'm baffled why you can't see the improvements Saints Row made to the underlying GTA game mechanics, nor appreciate some of the subtler touches: wider variety of missions, insurance fraud scams, GPS, etc.

Saints ain't no perfect game. I can see why someone would like one or more of the GTA games more. But, to say they aren't in the same ballpark of gamedom is stretching it.

Eh, other than the insurance fraud missions(and their totally random monetary rewards), which were fun, and the character editor, I also disliked Saints Row, quite a bit.

Not that my opinion on the matter counts for jack shit, but I had no problem with the aiming system in San Andreas(the lock-on was another matter), and the car handling in GTA4 is a-ok, it just takes a good deal of adjustment. I can drive my ass off in that game now. The GPS waypoint system is nice and all, but I never really needed it in the first place, I enjoy making my own route(I know many people disagree).

You must not have read when I wrote about the improvements Saints Row made. They did polish it up, of course. The game was enjoyable, for the most part. But it also was bland, had the most stereotypical and dumb story in video games, and got incredibly boring near the end. And even though you may have been happy with the character creation system ("He looks just like me!"), they should have learned from GTA3 that a mute protagonist is the wrong choice for a sprawling world like this. One sided conversations with a guy who goes along with everything is the fucking worst.

I have the suspicion, Matt, that you might've enjoyed the extra stuff in GTA IV more if you hadn't been fighting to get to 100% in a week. I've still got a ton of stuff I still want to try in that game, while after beating Saints Row (and really, I was playing just to get it over with for the last few hours) I felt no reason to ever return to the game world.

I do hope they do improve things on Saints Row 2. I hope their promise of a darker game is true. Co-op campaign could be incredible, and they've got some other good ideas they're playing with. But for me to sink so many hours into another sandbox game they're going to have something special here, something that wasn't present with the original.

Somebody's never played a Final Fantasy game.

Actually, I agree fully about the mute hero. That's just lame. And now that Mass Effect has proven that you can have a customized hero do lip-synced dialogue, I'll be showing less patience for that sort of thing.

I sense much anger in you.

Y'see I'd take GTA 4's living, breathing world, over the option to parachute any day. GTA IV is a title that you really do need to invest time into, and I think rushing through the game to do everything within a set time limit is just a really retarded way of approaching the title. There's so much character and backstory built into the little touches in GTA that every activity starts to actually get its own context.

But hey you can't parachute out of fucking helicopters so it must be a failure.
Hey man I never said it was a failure. It's flat out fantastic. There just may be a smidge much love thrown about without considering some of the flaws. Albeit there aren't many.

I totally agree with you and others that no other game has built a living and breathing city and it is flat out amazing. And I did not rush through it. I just finished it last night with about 75% completion and 44 hours of gameplay. I wouldn't call that rushing through. My complaints come from what I feel are very repetitive mission structures, unmemorable characters in the latter half of the game which I felt lessened much of the narrative drive established in the early stages of the game when dealing with Vlad and Dmitri. Granted the payoff at finale offsets some of those complaints. I felt the Assassin missions could have bee a chance to introduce some interesting new gameplay elements but...nothing new.

So focusing on one comment about parachuting is a bit asinine. This sounds like I didn't like the game but I DID really fucking like the hell out of it. I just feel that following San Andreas GTA 4 should have been a bit more of a leap forward. I mean it took me something like 80 odd hours to beat San Andreas the first time around and I only completed the final mission then because I wanted to see what happens not because I felt I was out of other gameplay and exploration to do. Whereas in GTA 4 it was the exact opposite for me.

So I mean for me I missed many of the options included in SA that were then nixed for GTA 4.

With such a richly designed gameworld introduced in GTA 4 I just wish Rockstar would have given me more to do in that world. I just think sometimes you have to realize that although the game is amazing there ARE some flaws. Some of which may be addressed in DLC.

So....GTA San Andreas-10/10 and GTA 4 9.4/10. Not like I didn't like it.

Why are people getting so pissed off when anybody suggests that GTA4 could have included this or that? Nobody's saying that it's crap. This is a game that has a 98% score on Metacritic; 45 out of its 73 scores are 100's. Are people going to get pissed because not all of them were? There's something creepy about this insistence that everybody declare it perfect. It reminds me of the Lord of the Rings fans who got angry at Roger Ebert for giving Fellowship of the Ring a positive review because it wasn't five stars. Relax, people.

Incidentally, Saints Row has an 81. If liking the game is delusional, clearly some critics require medication as well.

People get worked up over the weirdest things. I prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla, but vanilla ice cream's pretty good and tasty too.

I'm barely 25% of the way through GTA4 (I just started dabbling in multiplayer and that's taken me away from the main game for a while), but I bought a used copy of Saint's Row at the same time and I fully intend on exploring it when I'm through with Niko (although I also want to play Bully.) From what I can tell, it seems as though GTA4 has more depth while SR (and SR2, I suppose) has more breadth.

Alex has had the most valid point here.

Fuck Saint's Row - Mercenaries is where it's at.

When the sequel arrives, all your problems will be solved. Including ones unrelated to gaming.
When it arrives? It's supposed to have been here twice already, hasn't it?

How does a sprawling world have anything to do with a mute protagonist? I like that Niko says things when he orders a hot dog or hijacks a car, but it wouldn't exactly ruin the game if he didn't. I think you can have it both ways. If you want to craft your own character from scratch, then that's cool. If you want to have a fully-realized character like Niko Bellic, that's fine too.

Perhaps. But I have no desire to surf the in-game Internet for their parodies or watch TV. I was tired of the mini-games before I was done with the story and I especially hate being dragged back to them by bitchy "friends". And races, vigilante, and most-wanted missions are not innovative. What game before Saints Row had insurance fraud where you could beat the shit out of your character for money or activities where you could try to pick up as many whores as possible and race them back to a brothel? Sure, they don't make Saints Row a watershed game, but it offered new things you could do in the sandbox gameplay and I didn't see that kind of imagination in GTA IV when it came to side-quests.

And by the way, customizable characters aren't just about making someone look just like you. I've never done that, personally. My Saints Row character was actually Santa Claus.

I only remember the February date being pushed back? What was the other one?

As long as it arrives, it doesn't matter. Something that manages to solve all problems is worth a wait.

Has anyone seen these commercials with Gary Busey promoting Saints Row 2?

Because if it says Busey, you know it's going to be good.

I hope those weren't the reason he turned down Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust.

Well the Saints Row gig had a big bowl of blow right out on the craft services table.

Michael Dorn couldn't sound more out of place if he huffed helium before every take. And why does he do the Worf voice every time he's hired to do voice work? It's not his real voice.
If I remember correctly he did have a slightly different voice in Gabriel Knight, could be wrong though havn't played it in forever
post #74 of 77
I think that trailer may have spoiled the ending.
Not that anyone should care. I doubt anybody's going into this for the plot.

I think that scene with Keith David would probably be quite close to the beginning.

Despite what I said about GTA IV, I still am looking forward to this. I really liked Saints Row a lot and Saints Row 2 looks like a lot fun (just not as much fun as GTA 4).

I can't wait.

GTAIV is a glorious achievement, but I miss mid-mission checkpoints.
