I am a massive fan of Hostel II as well, Gabe, also finding the torch wielding angry geek mob who were out for Roth's blood equally baffling.

Cheers for that, I enjoyed reading it immensly... was getting bored of the lists until then.

You been reading the top ten Horror lists on the usual sites by the way? My god I really don't think that half of them see enough films in the genre they are supposed to love. On the plus side I have seen THE BURROWERS pop up a couple of times... so there is hope!

I fell sooooooo far behind last year on horror films I figured I didn't really have the right to make one of those lists. If I made one it would be pretty dull. Review-wise I keep seeing older films. 2009 introduced me to every Hammer Dracula flick, The Devil Rides Out, Hardware, Grapes of Death, Night of Death (the French one), and a million cheesy monster flicks.
Sounds like alot more fun to be honest... similarly I discovered many more Gialli films, 60s Italian Gothic Horrors and the great Hammer Horrors 'Plague Of The Zombies', 'The Gorgon' and 'The Reptile'.

Am just about to get stuck into a bunch of Code Red goodies as well. Messiah Of Evil has given me a taste for American Independent Horror.

I have to admit that I lost contact with Code Red out of a lack of time in the day. Their discs have been swept a bit under the carpet. I've heard The Strangeness is a must see.

I'm actually 'acquiring' Plague of the Zombies right now. I'll add those other two to the list. I forgot I also caught Vampire Lovers and Quatermas and the Pit this year too.
THE STRANGENESS is the one with the slimy stop-motion fadge monster in a cave isn't it?

I need to bag that one... Sole Survivor, Dead Pit and Beyond The Door are well worth the watch tho' (actually Dead Pit is a bit shit... but I have a soft spot in my soft brain for it)

The Reptile is definitely the lesser off the three... The Gorgon I did not expect to enjoy so much but it has an atmosphere that is vey alluring to me.

Quatermass And The Pit is excellent... I have The Vampire Lovers on a double bill DVD with Countess Dracula but I have never seen it as I always end up watching that instead!

I've got reviews of Sole Survivor, Deadpit, and BtD on DVDActive, but after that I lost contact. The Unseen really isn't worth it. Look for Synapse's Night of Death release though, it was a huge surprise. I'm working on another year end wrap up for DVDActive, but I'm losing steam on it.
Shit, of course you have... and I have read 'em too. Having a bit of an extended edition of New Year Duur brain.

I really liked Sole Survivor, am hopping over to the old Amazon marketplace to see if I can Night of Death on the old cheapo. Cheers!

I stop over on DVDActive every other day so I'll look out for your article... my god though, you have some omelette brains over there in your feedbacks tho'. That knicker stain that moaned at you for spoiling My Bloody Valentine by putting up gory pics was a real class act. Keep up the grand work tho' Gabe.

Thanks man! It's pretty clear why I come here to talk about movies when you see the DVDActive boards and talkback.

ETA: This was originally going to be 10 films, including Night Watch/Day Watch, The Life Aquatic, Superman Returns, Spider-Man 3, and Land of the Dead. It was just taking too long to write.

They're making Down & Dirty Pictures into a dramatic film for I think one of the cable channels. Also, I was surprised you liked that American Nightmare documentary, as I thought it was kind of lacking. The production values were not good.

I suppose American Nightmare gets on my good list because there aren't any more docs on the subject, and it's one of my favorite subjects. I'm probably being way to soft on it.

A Quick List of Alternative Vampire Films for the Weekend

Don't see Eclipse, discover something new. Kindly suggest some more, please.
John Carpenter's Vampires is pretty damn good, and the source book has become a big favorite of mine, since it turns a lot of the "romantic" mythology of vampires on it's head.

Let's Scare Jessica To Death is a CREEPY movie. Not the usual vampire movie either.

Blood For Dracula. Udo Kier as Dracula. 'Nuff said.

30 Days Of Night. Some would say it's a terrible movie, but with an original plot device, and vampires that are just plain ferocious animals, it's a really great movie to check out.

Great write up, Gabe.
I'm gonna throw in some obvious ones in the form of FRIGHT NIGHT (oh yes!), LOST BOYS and VAMP to a far lesser extent.

John Landis' INNOCENT BLOOD though is an often overlooked gem worthy of mention as is Tobe Hooper's SALEM'S LOT...based on seeing it waay too young that kid at the window still makes poo come out of my bum.

Nice pick there with LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH Rene... only saw it recently, damn good understated stuff... loves some of your suggestions Gabe; I have DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS and VAMPYRES sitting here still in their shrinkwraps fo fucks sake!

Gonna just chuck in Hammers' VAMPIRE CIRCUS as well because, basically, it is fucking brilliant.

Ugh, I really hate Lost Boys myself, but at least it creates some sense of feeling in me.

I just re-watched Innocent Blood the other day on the instant queue, and it's overlong, but it certainly has some great moments. And the Raimi and Argento cameos are wonderful. I'll also back up just about any Hammer Vampire movie. Even the bad ones have their moments.

I still haven't gotten around to Let's Scare Jessica to Death myself, unfortunately, so perhaps that will be weekend viewing, assuming I can get a copy.

Phil also suggested Ganja and Hess, which I need to revisit before adding to the list.
Haha, I knew you hated it from what you said t'other day in the Creature Corner...I dont have the love many do for it but I find myself liking it more with each passing year.

Did anyone mention LEMORA yet? That one is pretty special... once seen never forgotten.

Fuck, I forgot Thirst!!! What an ass!!
THIRST is great... tho' I woulda thought for a modern vampire film that CGI rooftop scene would've been mentioned in the bad CGI thing they're running over LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Saying that, it doesn't make the film worse to me. I love where it ends up taking the relationship and the vampirism and the ending is one of the best in this genre.

Glad you didn't mention INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE; I liked it when I saw it way beck when but seeing it again quite recently I really, really disliked it.

I'm not a huge IwtV fan (or Coppola's Dracula, or Vampires), but I was mostly just trying to avoid the obvious stuff. Blade II is actually a huge personal favorite that I figured didn't need a bump. The weirdo Aussie movie called Thirst is also pretty good.

Another one I haven't seen in too long to remember if its worth a damn is Darkness.
That's the Leif Jonker DARKNESS, right? Low budge-tastic it most certainly is but I seem to remember it being good fun enjoyable schlock. But, like yourself, it has been many, many moons.

Did you ever see the Vampire episode of MASTERS OF HORROR? I think it had Michael Ironside in it as a fanged fucker which appealed to me but I never did get the DVD.
Thread Starter
It's only good for Ironside (who's in it for like a minute) and Dickerson's photography (which is always good), but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
I blind bought Daughters Of Darkness at the Hastings going out of business sale back in February and found it to be pretty dull. Aside from the nice looking ladies that is.

I would have mentioned Thirst, but I haven't seen it yet, so I can't say anything about it.

You should get on Let's Scare Jessica To Death, ASAP, Gabe. It's really good. Brundle agrees with me.
How does everybody feel about The Forsaken? I thought it would be crappy, but I actually ended up liking it quite a bit.

Does that just call my taste into question?
I saw it in the theater back in 2001. I liked it. First movie I've ever seen with the hero being a guy who cuts trailers for movies.
It's the very definition of Dawson's Creek casting, with an assist from Roswell. With that kinda pedigree, how can you not like it?
Kerr Smith was a decent lead, and Schaech made for an alright bad guy. I've never found him that menacing. Well, except when he turned into a drooling rabies afflicted firefighter walking on a broken foot.

Definitely never saw Forsaken, but will admit a general, non-lasting affection for Dracula 2000.
Was it because of Vitamin C's tits? Jeri Ryan's? I must admit, I liked that weird stake launcher. And Gerard Butler before he was a tank.

Still it's sorta amusing.
I saw Dracula 2000 in the dollar movies and thought it was ok. That's one I wouldn't mind revisiting. Never saw the sequels that starred Roy Scheider and Jason Scott Lee either. I've got to check them out.

Per request:Italian Horror Check-List Part One

...there probably isn't going to be a part 2 for a while, unfortunately.
Hey Gabe, that was great! I just got done watching The Church and I love it--flaws and all. Had no idea Phillip Glass was pimipin that shit!

Gotta say...

THIS alone was worth the price of admission:

I'm also about three quarters into City of the Living Dead. Lots of goodness to be had there too! Thanks for the recommendations!

I hadn't seen The Church since around 2004, before I picked up the dvd a few weeks ago. That disturbing scene with the goat demon is on the insert in the dvd.

It's a pretty good movie, despite being really slow for the first half. The Philip Glass music is tops, downloaded "Floe" off of iTunes.

Looking forward to part 2, Gabe, and hope you feel better.

Italian Horror Checklist Part 2

the question now is do i take the time to do the Giallo section correctly, which includes watching quite a few film I've never seen or entirely forgotten, or do I do the more random stuff first to buy myself some time.
