Revolutionary hero or crazy old coot? I can't decide!

If the Boston tea party took place today I'm sure half the country would decry how they were liberals from the fringe interupting the free market, so.....

You could only import the king's tea, actually, so it wasn't free market.

Well, true.... but.... historical accuracy gets in the way of my point.

I love the random side-trip to Starbucks. Especially when reading the last sentence of that posting.

Do Americans actually 'get' that you've been getting massively subsidised petrol for decades while the rest of us have been paying normal prices?

Because these fuel increases are bringing your petrol price to a level thats still less than what we pay here in Oz and yet you;d think the resource wars have begun already.

I mean, if this is what people are doing now, your country will just fucking implode when oil actually becomes scarce surely.

Yeah, but, we likee our big SUVs over here. And...uh...uh..."USA! USA!"
Indeed. Round here regular 95 costs 1,55 euros per liter. Sort of makes you think about how necessary your trips are.

Makes me sort of think of drilling things and listening to Toby Keith.

What was the price of gas last year? At it's highest?

I don't know the answer anymore, it seems like I'm paying more but everythings blurring together.

What percentage of that 1.55 euros per liter is from a tax ?

edit

found a site... http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx

Yeah... definitly paying more today... I guess this is why I'm buying a Prius next year instead of the new Camero (2010 model gets 60 MPG plus has more oomph)

No, this isn't an "Americans are fat and spoiled" issue, although we are.

The whole global economy is going to suffer until somebody takes the initiative to do something about oil prices and petroleum alternatives.

It's not like any of us can sit back and say "it is what it is". Industry, transportation, production, et al needs to evolve, and quickly

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Australia has to import more and more oil every year. Your domestic production is steadily decreasing.

Here's some stats I found on your consumption and oil production.

This was my quote from when the candidates were talking about the gas tax holiday:

Obama is only paying lip service and raising false hopes when he says he's gonna face the oil companies (and implying he will lower gas prices). He ain't gonna do shit.

You have make adjustments based on the country's mass transit system (which the U.S. has failed horribly to promote), the proximity of conveniences for travellers, etc....

You can't compare the U.S. with the UK with Asia etc because the market is different.

But, Obama is right about the gas tax holiday. And prices aren't going to go down. What we need is a president who is going to try to guide the country's industry to break free of the hold that big oil has on us and start coming up with alternatives to the internal combustion engine. I think the world is wasting their time and starving people looking to biofuel.

This country's biggest failing is our lack to be innovators like we have been in the past.

Canada supplies more oil to the States than any other country, yet I drive into Maine for cheaper gas. It's about $1.38 a litre where I live in New Brunswick and $1.08 a litre right across the border in Maine. That's insulting.

Nice write up, good points all around.

I think the "Gas Tax Holiday" would be a good thing but I'm eyeing those truckers & Small Buisness folk who spend thousands a month on gas.

So, during lunch I had an interesting conversation with a co-worker from Europe and after crunching some numbers, Gas is cheaper in some parts of Europe than the US (excluding tax). (using his numbers)

Let's see if my numbers are right.. anyone want to figure this one out?

Excise Tax = 35% (for oil and gas fuel) + 22% vat (value added tax) (there's also some other tax but the guy's got too high of an accent for me to understand fully)

Now, in Poland, 1 litre = about 5 PLN where a gallon = 3.66 litre's and $1 is about 2.17 PLN

So, gas in Poland is $8.5, so if you back out the taxes.. they're only paying about $3.62 a gallon while we're paying almost $5 on average? with only $0.19 in tax? There's got to be a flaw in my math somewhere, this doesn't seem right.

As long as no one was hurt:

Burn it down crazy old lady. No one's going to miss a Starbuck's either. I'm sure they'd pop a tent up and an expresso maker on the charred ashes about 5 minutes after the Fire Department leaves.
