Discovery Networks Reality Shows

Thread Starter
I have not found a thread on this, so I thought I would start one.

I normally do not like "regular" TV shows and I despise Reality shows, but I really like the majority of the Discovery Networks Reality Shows.

Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, American Chopper, Miami Ink, Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, and now Ax Men are on my DVR record list.

Anyone else out there a fan of said shows?

Yeah, they're usually pretty entertaining, although an article I read recently that revealed Deadliest Catch's "devastating edits" to be fraudulent (e.g. shifting the timeline of events to create drama) diminishes all of them for me.

The search sucks. There are several threads on each of the different shows though.

It's rather obvious though that these shows don't follow an exact chronological time line for their scenes. However, you can't deny some of the stuff caught. Like the man over board rescues.

There are pretty much the only shows I watch with any regularity. Well, these and "The Soup." Yeah, they're edited for drama, but I still enjoy them.

We're all agreed that Captain Phil is the coolest captain, right?

Best episode ever on DC had to be when they put that truck onto another crew's pot string.

I never call any of these shows by their given name, they're all variations on Deadliest Catch. So we have Deadliest Truck, Deadliest Tree, Deadliest State, etc.

What do you call Dirty Yobs?

Agreed.

I didn't hear about the tricky editing thing but I guess it's not a surprise. I mean, they are making a TV show. It's the same thing with the Man Vs. Wild guy. Sure, he might get a little help off camera but he's still drinking water from elephant poop.

Ah, shit. Captain Phil had a stroke.

That blood clot he narrowly avoided a few seasons ago should have been a sign.

I really like these shows. They probably have a higher quality to volume ratio than any other shows on tv-except Dirty Jobs. It's not bad, but I'm just bored of basically the same thing every episode. Seeing Mike Rowe run for his life from ostriches was one of the funniest things I've ever seen, though.

I don't mind cutting stuff on Deadliest Catch to make it seem more dramatic. I mean, I just assume that happens. But what bothers me with the editing and narration is I never have a clear idea of just how long a season really is, and how long guys are at sea.

The show and narration jump from boat to boat so often, and forward and back explaining how fishermen do their jobs, that it's like they forgot the most basic thing-just provide a basic timeline of events.

I'll see a ship go out, set all the pots, fight some storms or ice, then get the pots for 72 hours straight. But it seems like it's rarely played out in that order. And when they get back to dock, do they immediately go back out to sea again? There's no recap or formal intro to get you to understand just what they're in for. I know the fishing season is strictly regulated, but it's really frustrating just how episodic this show seems when I'm curious as to what the feats of endurance these guys actually go through are.
