Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III

Tha Carter III has leaked, and it's fucking outstanding. My favorites include Mr. Carter, Lollipop, Inside the Fire, Let the Beat Build and the amazing closer "Misunderstood".

Anyone else heard this?

Something about the production does it for me in a big way. I was not digging it until the lush synth pad comes in. Plus the vocals are all vocodered and bizarre. It almost reminds me of Crystal Castles.

How can you have this thread and not post the brilliant cover image?

Allow me to repost my thoughts from the hip/hop thread:
So Lil Wayne pissed off a Mixtape DJ and now Tha Carter III has leaked. This is actually the first time I've listened to a Lil Wayne album, and I have to say.....it's a really great album. He's like some kind of idiot savant when it comes to rapping; he has some of truly bizarre lyrics (Fly, go hard like geese erection.) and about as much regard for the beat as Ruggero Deodato had for animal rights, but somehow it works. The way he uses his voice is like a jazz artist in New Orleans, it's very interpretive of how he feels at the moment and you get the impression that he's just making it up on the spot. There's a few too many slow jams on the album and the length of the CD is longer than the wait for the CD itself has been, but it's already got a space cleared in my Top 10 for 2008.

Standout tracks are 3-Peat, Mr. Carter, A-Milli, Got Money, Phone Home, Dr. Cater, and Let the Beat Build.

Wasn't lollipop the name of a 50 Cent song?

I think you're confusing it with "Candy Shop".

Heard most of the songs, but I'm still picking this up after work. My favorite track is probably Dr. Carter. I'm not a Swizz fan at all, but he did a great job on that one.

It's a toss between Dr. Carter and Let the Beat Build as my fav. song on the album. Sonic's right about the Swizz beat...beat; it doesn't sound a thing like him and surprisingly minimal. I like the nice touch of how it builds as it seems like the patient is getting better before cutting off to a small piano lament as he passes as well as the bass/heart beat.

Let the Beat Build is probably the most listened to so far because..well...the way the beat builds.Unlike Dr. Carter, the first time I heard it, I figured it had to be made my Kanye West, and sure enough it was. Wayne recognizes what he's been given and brings his A-game to the track and makes one of the best tracks of 2008 so far.

I went ahead and picked up the CD today, and aside from some rearranging of the tracks, it's the same thing. Still it's worth the purchase and you can probably pick it up on sale this week.

It has a subversive anarchic energy that reminds me of Slim Shady LP (without all the mean spirit), and Misunderstood is a fucking amazing end to an album.

The label is saying they might outsell Kayne's 957,000 first week for Graduation. That's just insane.

That album cover is fucking amazing.

Does that take into account online sales?

I don't think so. I think that's physical copies.

That's a great read. Thanks Russ.

Wow.

I must say I'm a little shocked at the reaction this is getting over here. Considering the buzz that Wayne has built up for himself over the past 4 years (leading many to crown him the greatest rapper alive) this project felt very half-assed to me. To the point that it comes off as sort of a glorified mixtape.

Admittedly I've never been much of a Lil Wayne fan (and I'm talking ever since "the Block Is Hot"), but part of me expected him to really capitalize on that buzz with an instant classic. Something that would really solidify him as the "People's Champ" of the current generation of rap fans.

Maybe I should give this a few more spins. Judging from the reactions here I might need to open my mind a bit.

....although I wasn't very impressed with the album on first listen, I must admit that A-Milli goes harder than just about any track in recent memory. The track itself is fast becoming the current standard for mixtape freestyles. Jay-Z did one that is all over Hot 97 at the moment. Fabulous also has one out

I've heard that from a lot of people, actually. (I haven't heard the whole thing, only a couple songs.) But reading that link I threw up yesterday, it's not hard to see why that would be the case. This shit came from all over.

I was actually hoping Jay's freestyle would be stronger.

As for the album: yeah, it does have a mixtape feel but I think anything he releases will. It's just the way he works., Throwing all of these songs together, recorded seperately over three years, isn't gonna be the model of cohesion.

I really liked it on first spin.

I think the lack of cohesion could very well be a sign of things to come. In recent years, the focus of the rap industry has shifted from LP's to singles and ringtones. Having a "hot album" is no longer a prerequisite for being the "hottest rapper in the game".

For me great rap comes down to creativity, and in that sense this has to be one of the best albums in the past ten years. Dr. Carter, Mr. Carter, Lollipop, A Milli, Phone Home, Misunderstood, and Playing With Fire are all classics IMO. Wayne sounds like he's freestyling the entire time, what I love about him is that it's inconceivable that anyone could ever ghostwrite for him, his style is that distinct. You gotta stand out like Andre 3K.

Great rap album in my opinion. The one with him and Jay-Z, Mr. Carter is probably my favorite.

I like this a lot. Sure, I've heard just about everything on here already and the 20 million mixtapes prepping this release have only put this thing on a thousand-foot high pedestal (again with the hyperbole), but it's still great. Plus, it's nice to have an official copy without DJs yelling shit over the songs.
