The 70s Ending

A bit of a look at endings in general, and a term I have for a specific kind.
I love that type of ending. I never thought of a term for it but "70's ending" works perfectly. American Werewolf has a great ending, similar to The Fly. But the kicking in of "Blue Moon" in the former really makes it.
While it doesn't cut to black right away, the best example I can think of is The French Connection. When I first saw, it pissed me off so much, I hated the movie. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. We spend so much time with the investigation and to have it end like that, jeez, only in the 70's would they have an ending like that.

First off, thanks for reading.

I have come to really love these endings (if done well). They used to frustrate the shit out of me, I thought they were cheap and relied on shock. When I started to figure out the value of being concise, and the purpose it could serve for a story, I appreciated them more and more.

I'm glad to hear I'm not completely out of my fucking mind with the term.

I had a teacher in 6th grade who tried to teach us about writing stories (I think that's what the lesson was). And he talked about endings. He was of the mind that he didn't like it when stories felt cut off without a proper resolution. But the example that he brought up was Sleepless in Seattle. It was absolutely maddening to him that the movie ended with Hanks and Ryan stepping into the escalator without anymore elaboration on what happened afterwards.

It made sense to me at the time, I suppose. But I guess that teacher (Mr. Frank) would consider that ending to be an example of what you're talking about (in a totally superficial way, of course). Hahaha.

Great blogging!!! Keep it up!

EDIT: Finally got to watch your Jurassic sound design project. Talk about the most awesome assignment! Good job. Whoever did Alan Grant's voice was a pretty good mimic. The Goldblum and Tim voices made me laugh. Fun Wilhelm. Where did the screams come from?

Goldblum & Tim = Me

Alan Grant = Friend of mine, Cameron

Screams/Willhelm = Stock sound. SCAD's sound department has a sound database (licensed from four different sound companies) that contains about 105,000 songs. According to my professor, that's about 5,000 more than Skywalker's general database (keeping in mind that each artist typically has their own collection).

83 Minutes? Naked women? Puns? Hmmm...think I'll pass.

No I won't! Can't wait to see this thing!

I don't comment enough but I assure you I read every time Renn. I like it a lot, and I'm glad to hear you liked Hell Ride because I think it looks pretty fun myself.

Thanks Jakespeare, I appreciate that. Rest assured, Hell Ride is FUN in giant neon-red flaming Ben-Hur letters.

I forgot (and lest we lose consistency!):

BLOG #15:

Hell Ride is only 45 Minutes long.

Here I explain why the newest movie bearing Tarantino's stamp is really less than an hour long.

Dammit Anderson. That one took me a minute. None of us noticed or mentioned a thing about that.

King of Kong is Kinda Worthless

Am I the only one who thought this movie was mean and disingenuous?
Good blog! I love the movie, but somewhat know of the inconsistencies behind it along with the tricky Michael Moore-ish techniques they use to push their agenda.

So when you first saw it, did you already know of the inconsistencies and not ever get to enjoy the film on a purely narrative level?

About the anticlimactic ending with the tacked-on coda. Supposedly, that's really what it was. Earlier versions of the film didn't have Weibe getting the record back. When they got that footage later, it really was just added after the fact.

The loads of unused interviews found on the DVD point to some of the liberties the film took. Mitchell's friend goes some way to defend Mitchell as a human being as much of a douche he comes off on-camera. Odd thing is he never mentions the hidden past between Wiebe and Mitchell you refer to. Is that all on the wikipedia entry?
I'm not sure how anyone can find the pure narative structure of this film to be bad... I mean the even liberties the filmmakers took were make it a stronger, more emotional narative. They contrast Mitchell and Wiebe perfectly.

Anyways... I found it funny, Renn, that you rail on the film for its factual errors but then cite Wikipedia for providing your information.

You sound like one of my professors! I haven't watched the special features on the DVD, so I couldn't reference those. However, there are plenty of websites found with a quick google search (which I do mention) that can provide the same info.

I'll update the Blog with a reference to all of this, though.

There's actually another documentary out there about the subject of classic arcade gamers called Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade, that is supposedly a lot more faithful when it comes to these people (including Billy Mitchell). Probably a much more proper documentary than KoK is, which I never really considered a documentary at all.

For the 2 & 1/3 people who care, I should have some new and relatively interesting stuff up this weekend.

Anybody ever manage to see the "Street Fighter" tournament documentary, BANG THE MACHINE?
Bang The Machine? It's the first I've ever heard about it.
They had trailers and a website and stuff years ago - that G4 clip is the first real info I've heard from the project since their offices got hit on 9/11 and it seemingly fell off the face of the earth. I'd heard they'd been screening an incomplete version at festivals (and Street Fighter tournaments apparently) as they put the film back together, which is why I asked. Figured someone might have caught it somewhere. Chewer eyes and ears are everywhere.
