Deep Impact (1998)

It's playing on TNT ("More Movie...Less Commercials!") right now. I remember being firmly planted on Deep Impact's side in the Deep Impact-Armageddon war but watching it now...it's not that great.

I love disaster films as much as anyone but some of the characters in this film are so god damn stupid (Tea Leoni pisses me off to no end) and the space ship stuff isn't interesting at all. Though I do have a massive crush on Mary McCormack and you can't go wrong with a little Favreau. And Kurtwood Smith is in it!

Anyway, it's a little disappointing to come back to this film and realize it wasn't as great as I remembered. Anyone else catch this one lately?

Not lately. I'm fairly equal on both. But for pure spectacle, I actually prefer Armageddon.

Haven't seen it in a while, but I certainly do remember all the ARMAGEDDON Vs. DEEP IMPACT discussion that went on at that time. I never really understood why we couldn't all agree that both films were about as enjoyable as dysentery.

Something happens to me inside when I look at Mary McCormack.

Thanks to this movie, I know that its possible to outrace a coment with a dirtbike.

Wait, would that be a written comment or a spoken one?

I hate this movie with a hate disproportionate to its blandness.

Depends on how fast the written comment was thrown.

I always thought that Deep Impact was the "teenage girl" version of the killer asteroid movie, while Armageddon was the "12 year-old boy with ADD" version.

Deep Impact is the pussy passive agressive bespectacled wallflower of asteroid movies, where Armageddon is the drunk demolition derby loving wifebeater.

Pretty much sums up their directors

Still love that scene of the comet hitting the earth though:

Edit: Mimi looks like a "Mimi". Michael looks like, well....an asshole.

A pimply-faced Logan Echolls is in this movie proclaiming that Elijah Wood will have so much more sex now that he's famous.

Also, a fresher-faced Dougray Scott as Leoni's cameraman.

I'm with stelios on this.  The blandness of this movie (fittingly scored by James Horner) makes me long for Armageddon.  Damn you, Mimi.

Drunk, demolition derby-lovin' 12 year old wifebeater with ADD... ALL THE WAY.
