Teeth (2007)

I think I may have just seen the most oddball superhero movie ever.

It was about an hour into the picture before I realized what I was watching, but it's undeniable beyond that. Frankly that was the point when I realized I was completely in love with this movie.

Jess Weixler is fantastic, she deserves every bit of that award she won for this performance at Sundance. The film is all over the place tonally but she somehow manages to make every moment of it work and make it believable.

I hope the writer/director sees more work come his way soon.

Just saw this, too. I think you hit the nail about the tone being all over the place, and I don't think it was entirely successful because of that. I couldn't tell if the movie was mocking her and condoning her or both. Or if this was supposed to be a satire or taken seriously. And the whole subplot with the stepbrother was telegraphed way too early.

I agree that Wexler did a hell of a job with what must have been a tough role. Didn't hurt that she looked like a Bizarro World Heather Graham either.

I saw this at the our local film festival a few months ago. My female friend loved it!

My first thoughts were that the movie was hurt slightly by the fact that there wasn't a single sympathetic male character - they may as well all have had horns - but, on reflection, that probably helps. It is all over the place, but on the whole it's good fun. I like Jakespeare's interpretation of it as a superhero origin movie, actually.

As mentioned Weixler was great and, hey, who doesn't enjoy copious shots of gaping crotch wounds! <--- I've invisi-texted that just in case!

Hey, Dawn's stepdad (Lenny Von Dohlen, yeah!) wasn't a bad guy. And while his fucknut stepbrother character was a turd, I thought John Hensley did some interesting stuff that semi-humanised him.

Pretty cool movie, this one, and Jess Weixler was terrific.

This one was a disappointment. Jess Wexler was great and the penis devouring scenes were everything I could have hoped for, but the script needed A LOT of work.

FYI: Netflix has it as an Instant Play option.

Just posted this in the thread in CC

Spoilers

Nearly every guy in the movie tries to rape her, or molest her, I half expected her dad to make a move after the mom died. I thought the fact that they all deserved it to be boring, and a less interesting path to take. At least maybe make the first guy an accident. Then there was all that musing about adaptation, which would be an interesting concept to expand upon, that maybe she developed these teeth in a defense to the misogynistic threats of the world, but then they have a giant nuclear plant sitting in her backyard, and it's really just a freak mutation. Finally the movie just sort of resolves itself with her chomping off her step brother's penis, then she heads off to wander the lonely roads. Like Bruce Banner, but with a shark fanged vagina. Avenging women everywhere.

edit: That is to say, I didn't like it. Thought there wasn't much there beyond the shock value.

I actually thought this was pretty awful, great premise aside. I REALLY wanted to like it, but like people said above, scripts just all over the place. I dont think the Director/writer had any idea what kind of movie they wanted to make, or at least thats how it feels.

I just wish one critic would have thrown out a blurb-worthy review stating that "Teeth will do for fucking, what Jaws did for summer swimming". I guess it was not to be.

I thought it was a good film. I felt at the beginning that it was mocking Weixler's character and choices, but by the end it felt that it was really to setup her delusion that she was a weapon for God against sexual predators. It wasn't perfect, but it sure was different.

Toss me in the great performances, sloppy execution camp. Saw it last week, and wanted to like it a lot more than I did. Upon a second viewing it was obvious the film needed some work. It also bothered me that basically every guy she came across wanted to rape or molest here. I mean, she was what, 18? Guys just suddenly started finding her attractive, and in a week long period multiple rape attempts? Just seemed so silly.

I will say, the severed penis fx were nice...and made me very paranoid.

Just watched this. Interesting vaginal imagery all over the film (extreme close-up of a hole in a tree, for instance). The two nuclear plant smokestacks in the background also seemed to be evoking...something.

The tone is somewhere between Saved! and Ginger Snaps. Definitely made me uncomfortable, but a lot of fun! God bless Netflix instant for finding crazy shit I'd never hear of otherwise.

Incredibly fun to watch with a crowd, or at least a big group of friends. I can't imagine watching it by myself and enjoying it as much.

I saw this with friends when it came out and we had a blast. I was surprised it didn't gain a following and apparently drifted into obscurity. I considered it a horror comedy and one of the better and more clever ones I've seen.

Give it some time... I still believe in this one.
