Name the last good horror movie

Thread Starter
For the life of me, i can't remember the last good horror movie I saw, and the Mist doesn't count. Everything is cheesy and derivative, or a remake. What was the last truly good horror movie?
I'm assuming this thread was inspired by the latest CHUD podcast?

It took me a minute or two to think of one but I'll vote for 28 Days Later. I think that movie's a masterpiece, as well as one of my favorite films.
I thought The Ruins fit the bill nicely. But I guess everyone was too busy watching Prom Night to notice.

What, name the last good horror movie, but the last good horror movie doesn't count?
Yeah, I'm a little curious: why does THE MIST not count?
I think he wants original stories...or something.
Fropm what I hear, The Mist should count. However, it hasn't reached this country yet, so I can't quite confirm that one.
The Strangers is meant to be another candidate, too.
As far as my own experience goes, I'd nominate Sweeny Todd.
Well the correct answer is 'The Mist'.

I also liked 'The Orphanage' but it's more supernatural chiller than horror.

Other than that it's hard to think of a recent one. Dog Soldiers? Slither?

ZOMG really?! That's awful. We got it late, but not that late.

Such a good film though.
Never reached theaters here either, I ordered mine as soon as it came out on amazon. It's due out here on DVD Next month I think.

Theatrically, I think.
It's been far too long a wait, though.

The Host and Pan's Labyrinth are much more deserving of mention than Dog Soldiers.

THE DESCENT was pretty good. Oh, and I saw [REC] recently - that was pretty nasty and intense.

How is a haunted house story not a horror movie? It's a quintessential horror movie! And it's the last good one I saw. Before that there was THE DESCENT.
I've got high hopes for BOTCHED after Alex's endorsement.
I was also going to mention The Descent, though I'd still say that The Mist is the best recent example and should count.
I would have gone with The Oprhanage too, even after that somewhat botched ending. It had atmosphere and smarts to spare and the scene with the medium alone made it worth recommending.

Prior to that, or maybe a different kind of horror, would be The Host, though that film is pretty much uncategorisable. And ignore anyone who tells you 28 Weeks Later. Its not a horror film, its an action film. And not a very good one.

Isn't anyone going to talk about The Signal, which released yesterday?

Haven't seen it, is it good? I'm usually late to the party with a lot of movies--I didn't end up seeing The Descent or The Mist until fairly recently.
Not counting THE MIST? Probably WRONG TURN 2.

Dunno, but everyone was talking about it in '07, so it's weird that no one's talking about the DVD release. It's sitting on my coffee table right now, so I'll probably watch it on Friday.
THE MIST doesn't count because it was "Great". He's only looking for "good" horror movies.

I was going to say that as well, but I don't think it's what our little warrior angel is qualifying as "good". It's derivitive and cheesy, but it's enjoyable if your a fan of the slasher/mutant/Henry Rollins genre. A similarly enjoyable one is the Hills Have Eyes remake which falls into the slasher/mutant/Ted Levine genre.

You know, I'm about this close to cancelling Netflix if they don't send me that already. This close, I tell you!
Well, I liked The Strangers.
The Mist is the obvious answer, so why wouldn't it count? I know everyone has already asked that, but it's a fundamental flaw in the question. The Ruins isn't the worst answer either, although it's definately good, not great. Personally, I got nothing from The Orphanage.

Um, you need to buy the 2 disc, so you can watch the B&W version STAT, I tell you!
The Strangers, obviously. Than the Mist, than you have to go all the way back to Hostel.

I don't buy a DVD unless I know I'll make time to watch it a few times.

Bob, I'm sure you've heard this ad nauseum, but make sure you have an opportunity to see the Black & White version, as well. Also, I'd say The Mist is well worth the blind-buy.

As for me, I'd say The Mist, Wrong Turn 2 and Sweeney Todd (all of which have been previously mention), although I'm tempted to include Beowulf, as well.

I also have high hopes for Botched should Netflix ever see fit to, y'know, actually send it to me.

But, you totally skipped over SLITHER.

Since '05 (the year of HOSTEL), I really liked THE DESCENT, THE HOST, ABOMINABLE, EVIL ALIENS, and THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake.

And not many people have seen them, I'm sure, but I really got a kick out of the trashy and goopy Kurtzman flick, THE RAGE, and the Troma-esque DIE YOU ZOMBIE BASTARDS! (edited by Chewer, Daniel Strange), ALTERED, and THE ROOST.

DARKMITE8 Honorable mentions to the acquired tastes, BIG BAD WOLF and GRAVEDANCERS.

The 2 different versions, plus the Darabont audio commentary make it worth it, trust me. Only $10 on half.com... A steal!
I certainly don't think you need to go back that far, young Ripoll, if you include non-US releases and straight to DVD stuff. But, certainly, American theatrically released horror is in a bad state. That's why The Strangers is such a breath of fresh air, even though it stumbles on the way to an ending.

Plus shipping? Maybe you can afford to drop that much coin, Trump, but I'm a working stiff!

Ah, yes, Ted Levine or Henry Rollins. The eternal debate, the eternal struggle.

Wrong Turn 2 is the derivative and cheesy, but completely enjoyable, tribute to 80s horror that Hatchet wanted to be (but failed miserably).

Also, no one has mentioned Behind the Mask, although it's somewhat of a parody of the horror genre.
Did anyone here see Altered (06)? Surprisingly decent alien horror. It was definitely buoyed by low expectations, but it's awesome for a DTV release.

I didn't like The Hills Have Eyes remake or The Descent (It was tense and scary until goblins showed up) and I haven't seen the rest that Darkmite listed, so I'll concede that.

And yeah, I keep forgetting to mention Slither cuz I hardly consider it a horror film. I'm not saying it isn't one, I'm just saying the comedy elements were SO strong, to me, it's a comedy. The same way Shaun of the Dead was a comedy.

That's a good one, but not a GOOD one.
Too crazy for Boystown, too much of a boy for Crazytown.
I saw INSIDE just a week or two ago, so I guess that would be my answer.
Poultrygeist, if it qualifies. The Descent, Inside, The Host, The Ruins..

The Mist stands head and shoulders above everything for me though.

Ever notice that lots of horror movies start with The?
Lots of comedies too. And action movies. And dramas. Weird...

Worth a blind buy? It's been very long wait on NF for weeks.
SLITHER was more of a sci-fi spoof with some horror thrown in for good measure.

For the same reason my vote is THEM.
Well, this thread is good for reminding me of shit.

Adding Inside to the Netflix queue and buying (possibly) [Rec] from Amazon UK. I'd like to see it before the American remake sweeps the nation.

Yeah, I edit-added it to my list^. Plug!

BAD BIOLOGY, BOTCHED, and TEETH are on my radar in a big way.

Inside, which I ordered off of Amazon immediately after watching a burned copy my brother sent me. It arrived yesterday, I can't wait to show it to everyone I know. Not many movies get under my skin, but this did.

No one likes a smartass, smartass! ..except on CHUD..

Well in comparison, there's seems to be a lot more 'The noun' horror movies than dramas or action or whatever. I'm sure if you spent the weekend on imdb making a long detailed list you might shoot that down, but off of the top of my head I can name 10 horror movies that match the scheme for every 1 of a different genre.

I mean more along the lines of THE MIST, THE FOG, THE RUINS, THE THING than THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON..
