New Kings Of Leon due in September

That was quick. I know DaveB doesn't care for them (he's all about the angular Lithuanian reggae) but I know that there are others on the boards besides myself that like them:

Oh yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to this.

They've got one of the best rhythm sections going on in the rock world right now.

Aha Shake Heartbreak is one of my fave albums of the decade. While I enjoyed Because of the Times, I missed the melodic fervor that was prominent on their first two discs.

From the article:

Three days after his surgery, Caleb says he removed his arm from a sling and began writing: “I don’t know if it was the pills or what, but the melodies were so much stronger than anything I’ve ever done — it’s just really beautiful songs.”

If that's accurate, one of the best albums of the year is waiting in the wings.

I love these guys and can't wait for the new album. Regarding DaveB and his opinion, I guess by now he's earned the right to occasionally be WRONG about music. So if he actually "doesn't care for them" - we can allow him a get-out-of-jail-free card.

For the record, I don't hate them. The swagger in the vocals sounds too affected for me to fully get into them, but I actually liked some of Because of the Times. "Charmer" is a nice riff on the Pixies, and there are a few songs that remind me of the Constantines, whom I prefer.

If my dissenting opinion has to be remarked upon, it would probably make more sense in the billionth NIN thread that gets started here.

Was half messing with ya, Dave. You and Ray actually helped me get into this group in the first place.

Only by the Night out on Sept. 23rd

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/..._id=1003819785

Kings Of Leon unveiled its fourth studio album for media last Thursday (June 19) at a bar in New York's East Village, but band members snuck off before the playback began, perhaps not wanting to influence opinion.

Eleven tracks were played from "Only by the Night," due Sept. 23 via RCA. A pinging keyboard sound introduces the spacey opener "Closer," highlighted by a soulful vocal from Caleb Followill. Fuzzed-out bass drives a great, funky groove on "Crawl," while "Sex on Fire" is a strident rocker with a sultry undercurrent.

The new album is the follow-up to 2007's "Because of the Times," which has sold 180,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Kings Of Leon will be on tour in Europe starting June 27 at the U.K.'s Glastonbury Festival, and will return stateside for an Aug. 9 set at the first All Points West festival at New Jersey's Liberty State Park.

Can't wait for this, I loved Because Of The Times.

You can hear both 'Sex On Fire' (the 1st single) and 'Crawl' on their home page (hit the "Music" link):

'Manhattan' played live:

One word: SMOKIN'.

They're opening for Radiohead in NY tonight. Wouldn't that be something?
Saw them live in Sydney at the start of the year and they were fucking incredible, I've adored them since first hearing Youth And Young Manhood while streaming London radio off the net back at the end of '03 and Because Of The Times was my favorite album of last year.

Yep, Im a fan, and Im giddy at the thought I'm getting another chunk of awesome from my favorite current American band so soon after last years brilliance.
I've only listened to them a couple of times each, but "Crawl" and "Sex On Fire" are pretty good simple-headed songs. I'm liking "Manhattan" and "Use Somebody" a bit more than those right now, though. Looking forward to hearing all of Only By Night when it comes out.

I couldn't convince anybody to go with me to KoL's upcoming Atlanta show, so I'll be missing them live again. Apparently I'm the only 30-something human in my little circle who still likes to go to a few concerts over the course of a year.
It hath leaked.
Just finished my first listen. Vocally, Caleb has never sounded better. There's so much soul in his delivery. It really is a beautiful album on a purely musical level. This is one of those discs that'll be exciting to rediscover as the months go by.

If you're already a fan of the band, you'll dig it. If you're not, I think there's something here that'll catch your ears, even if it won't change your opinion of the band completely.

Glorious.

I'm totally throwing in the towel with Abed on this one. I was a bit skeptical of Sex on Fire, because it felt like a Top Gun soundtrack B-side, but I still enjoy it on a level. The rest of this album though? Jesus. Caleb is bringing his A-game, and it shows so well. I love all of KoL's stuff, but this seems to be the most cohesive and aurally pleasing effort from them. I can't wait to hear where they go from here. It's just a very tight, meaty album. Caleb's tendency to chirp and yelp (from the previous records) is replaced by a cocksure soulful sound that's just fantastic. I'll be listening to this fucker for a while.
This is tres good.
I seriously fuckin love it. Listening to it for the first time right now as we speak, and its yet another step forward from Because of the Times.

Just so solid, the boys haven't sounded more confident in their arrangements and Jakes right, Calebs bringing his a-game and then some.

Awesome, this is going to be a huge summer player for me over the coming months.
Seems the overall response to this album by listeners has been lukewarm. A lot of people like it less than Because of the Times. And people here aren't saying much about it lately. I like Only By the Night so far, but I'm also finding more and more that it's a mistake to judge an album until it's been out for a couple of months. Any thoughts on how this is holding up or has it not aged enough yet?
I like it, but I haven't had the urge to listen to it since it leaked.

Dear Science has made every album released this year seem like studio leftovers, and reminded me that true-blue classics aren't entirely extinct. Putting things into context, Only by the Night feels stagnate when it comes to artistic growth, even though it delivers with confidence and satisfaction what you'd expect. In that sense, it's a minor success.
If nothing else, I think Caleb's vocals sound stronger and more confident on this album than ever before. As for their music in general, Kings of Leon have always had a pretty basic, classic-rock tinged sound. Perhaps the fact that they aren't the go-to band for anything exceedingly groundbreaking is disappointing to some. Although that's a fair criticism, I personally don't need that from every group I listen to. I think they're passionate about what they're doing and it usually pays off well enough for me.
I'm definitely not expecting anything groundbreaking from Kings of Leon, just like I don't expect anything groundbreaking before I listen to a new Pearl Jam album. My above criticism wasn't really a criticism, just an observation. I think the Kings might fall into my Strokes category--entirely enjoyable but so ever slight. They've got the trimmings of a well-oiled machine, but they usually fail to push my emotions onto another plane (something a Pearl Jam or Zeppelin does quite often). You know, that feeling.
Oh no doubt, Ray. This band is certainly not in the same league with those deserved giants you listed. You know, I hadn't thought of this until now, but I think I like KoL best when they groove. Maybe that's why I prefer their first two albums over these last two so far. And by the way, Ray, my last post wasn't really directed at you as much as I was commenting on the criticism I'm seeing about the new album online in general. I think it's better than people are giving it credit for, but I'm starting to think I'm in the minority there.
I've seen the name around from time to time but never gave them a listen Caught a clip of them performing Sex On Fire and I dug it enough to check out the album. Now that and Because of the Times are in constant rotation on my iTunes. Great band. As Ray said, the rhythm section is fantastic. I love "Closer" and "Manhattan".
Just started listening to them and I'm rather surprised at the criticism of them overall and this album in particular. They're not trying to be groundbreaking. They're just a fun rock band with a great lead singer and some snazzy melodys. And I certainly don't think they're forgettable.

They're just a really good rock album. It's depressing that thats still better than 90 percent of what considered "good" mainstream rock today (Ya i'm looking at you Hinder)
Nah the hipsters will never accept a band just wanting to be great, rather than groundbreaking apparently.

Luckily, we don't have that problem in this country as much, we just dig awesome rock - and this album well and truely qualifies for my money
post #25 of 35
Just listened to Youth And Young Manhood. Its hard to believe that its a debut record. Very accomplished and very very rocking. i can't wait to listen to Aha Shake Heartbreak.

By the way its interesting that they are constantly compared to The Strokes. I'm just saying that because i seem to be in the very small minority that just does not get The Strokes.
Oh and Trani is a an amazing amazing song.
I had to bump this thread back up, if for no other reason than to say: "Kings of Leon are officially mainstream kings."

I never would've fathomed this would be the album that would bring them such crossover appeal. 'Use Somebody' has become a Top 40 hit. They've had a huge following in the U.K. for awhile now, though.

It's probably my least fave album of theirs. Go figure.

Put in Because of the Times a month or so ago. Still rocks my socks off.
Saw them at the Forum last weekend. It was awhole lot of fun and I had a great time with my friend although I was kind of annoyed that they basically came out and played their songs note for note with no kind of spontaniety or anything. I mean it was a great time but i couldn't help notice it.

It got even more noticeable when I saw The Dead Weather at the Wiltern who rocked the place and couldn't be louder and more in your face.

By the way The Whigs opened up for KOL and they were great. Ive never heard these guys. They sound like 70s Neil Young and The Crazy Horse.

If I never have to hear "Use Somebody" ever again, it'll be too soon.

This is the only song I've heard of theirs and its officially made me hate the band. Not because its a terrible song, just overplayed. Sorry, KOL. Maybe someday I'll give you a chance.
I've had (and like) "Youth and Young Manhood" for awhile now but that's the only Kings album I've listened to until recently downloading this one. It's definitely mainstream; i don't listen to radio anymore so hadn't heard "Use Somebody" before but it's easy to understand how it would be played out pretty quickly.

Still listening to it, but the early Tom Petty/Heartbreakers influence I liked form "Youth and Young Manhood" seems to have been traded for a Big Head Todd and the Monsters groove. This is not a compliment.
Plus Followill's chocobo-esque "YARK" on some tracks grates hard now, whereas it didn't so much before. Ah well, it was fun before hipster backlash kicked in.

You haven't heard 'Sex on Fire'? Not as overplayed as 'Use Somebody', but it hit the mainstream pretty hard.

A truly great song can withstand overplay. 'Since U Been Gone' has been played a gazillion times, and I'm still not sick of it. My main gripe with 'Use Somebody' is, musically, it's so, so boring. Add in the lame-o lyrics, and you've got a recipe for easy-to-digest populace tripe.
