HD-DVD clearances - Page 2

That's just Kate.

Truth be told I don't feel too passionately about the whole thing, at least on any deep level. It's a minor annoyance. I'm PO'd about the state of digital distribution, what with our backwards IT infrastructure in this country, and I'm annoyed that I can't watch many HD movies because of what I view to be some shady business with the studios when it comes to the downfall of HD DVD. I also prefer the logo ETC of HD DVD. I don't really view the DVD FORUM thing as a serious moral consideration. I am willing to use it as a justification for my position because I've dug my heels in, and have decided it feels best to tilt at windmills with full force rather than sulk about not owning a BLU RAY player

If I were forced to really think on the matter and research it, perhaps I'd find SONY's position sympathetic, but for now I'm content to hold a grudge

Well, at least you admit it.

As crazy as Kate may sound sometimes, I actually do understand the seeds of what drives her.  I've definitely been in situations where it's just so much more satisfying and righteous to hold a grudge.

maximum video bit rate - 40 Mbit/s

HD-DVD:

maximum data transfer rate - 36 Mbit/s

maximum video/audio bitrate - 30.24 Mbit/s

maximum video bit rate - 29.4 Mbit/s

A single-layer blu-ray disc is indeed 25 gigs, but most blu-ray movies use dual-layered discs that hold 50 gigs.  So like dual-layer DVDs, you don't have to flip or switch to another disc.  Of course, sometimes it's the studios that cheap out and put a movie like Speed Racer on a single-layer blu-ray and not add a lossless audio track.  But that's not really the fault of the format.

Since I clearly don't get as passionate about things as you do, I took my failure to pick the winning side of the format wars without much fuss.  I chalked up my Toshiba HDDVD player as a loss and got a PS3 later.  It's great.  It looks and sounds... PERFECT.

HDDVD isn't going to come back.  Not even as a niche market.  People just don't care enough.  It couldn't win even with the earlier (and less buggy) launch and the support of the porn industry.  Anyway, blu-ray is already seen by some as the last physical format for movies.  Nobody is going to try to bring back a failed format in that kind of situation.  And blu-rays are already taking good care of most people who want HD content on a physical format.

In terms of my own personal preferences, blue is probably my favorite color, so I immediately preferred the aesthetics of blu-ray cases to that of the maroon HD-DVD ones.  I disagree about the quality of the HD-DVD logo as well.  To me, it just looked like what it obviously is: the standard DVD logo with an HD tacked on to the side, which is basically what HD-DVD was.  Based on that, I definitely prefer the blu-ray logo.

So why did I pick HD-DVD at first?  I just thought that was the one that would win.  It wasn't better, but it was cheaper.

Perhaps you are right, Nooj. I don't really know much about codecs ETC so I will just say you might be correct

as to the rest..

I happen to like the LOGO because I love the DVD logo. It's one of my favorite logos of all time. If you asked people what a DVD logo looks like, they could all tell you. If you asked people what the official CD logo looks like (there is one, its on nearly every case somewhere), they'd draw a blank or be unable to describe it

So, IMHO, the DVD LOGO is iconic

As for BLUE and RED? RED used to be my favorite, but now I've decided I no longer have a favorite color. I actually prefer the color blue on electronics, but the point is - for me - cancelled out because I hate the entire idea of those colored bands on top of cases anyway. They ruin the cover art

So glad that you can understand, McNooj. I like to write, and it's cathartic to pen great odes to HD DVD ETC, when the subject crosses my mind. I can understand that if people misinterpreted it as something I took more seriously, it would be odd

It's just how I approach the world, and it's who I am

I really don't know what to say to this...

It's a really frustrating response.  I honestly don't care one way or the other. I chose Blu-Ray because the PS3 happened to play Blu-Rays.  But to admit that you're making a conscious effort to be willfully ignorant on a subject because basically, to me anyway, if you'd do some research you might have your opinion on something you've arbitrarily decided is "the best" (which is based on nothing) changed . . . How do you do that and feel okay with yourself?

It's a really frustrating response, because it's hard to have a legitimate, thoughtful conversation with some one like that.  It's like trying to have a conversation with a crazy religious person.  Because eventually, probably very quickly, the person is no longer having a conversation with you.  It's just a series of defenses and willful ignorance.  It's fine if you LOVE the hell out of something and HATE the shit out of some other thing, at least articulate why.  "Because" is so damn frustrating.

The stuff that truly bothers me (politics, environment) I've basically been avoiding discussion on all together lately, haha. Less cathartic to dwell on those than to refight the format wars

At some point, you just have to put up your hands and say... "That's as far as this is gonna go."

You have to have come to some kind of conclusion about Kate's posting style if you've been here for a while.  One does not simply walk into a debate with Kate.  Those black gates are guarded by more than just logical fallacies!  There are grudges there that do not sleep and her eyes are ever watchful!  Not with all the logic in the world could you do this.

IT IS FOLLY.

Unless you're just procrastinating like I am, of course!

Yes . . . it seems a more teacherous journey than I thought . . .

And don't begrudge all Multi-cam laugh-track sitcoms.  I love me some M*A*S*H!

I'm cool with laugh-tracks on older sitcoms (Cheers, Frasier, Seinfeld).

I just pour hate sauce on all current sitcoms that use laugh-tracks.  Those are usually the ones that aren't funny and feature laughter CONSTANTLY.

I'll at least say that the HD-DVD add-on for my 360 hasn't been unhooked yet, and isn't liable to be. All the movies I own on it are exactly the same as their Blu counterparts, and in some random cases better--my HD DVD of The Thing with the Terror Takes Shape documentary continues to laugh at everyone--and it's on a system I actually play games with. And snatching up high-def movies for pennies is joyous.

So, there's that.

I did try to give a detailed explanation of why I feel loyal to HD DVD, including my history with the tech and my feelings on the logo ETC. I look forward to future debates with you, hopefully we'll be able to have an edifying dialog

Yes, I find the absurd level of laugh tracking present on modern sitcoms extremely vexing. I never seemed to notice laugh tracks back in the day, and when I've watched reruns the laughter seems well placed. I don't really watch modern TV sitcoms (did IT CROWD have a laugh track?), but when I've caught snippets it seems that the laugh track is tittering away constantly, even when characters are just talking and not saying anything particularly clever

Amen! So glad you're still enjoying HD DVD too. I'm so excited for my BLADERUNNER set. At sleep away camp back in the day I was running around telling everyone who'd listen that Ridley Scott was my favorite director, and BLADERUNNER my favorite film. Most of these people had no clue who or what those things were, but I was just elated to declare my love out loud for such a wonderful movie. I didn't get the  COLLECTORS SET when it came out due to costs, which was very tough for me because I'm someone who once had my mom drive me an hour round trip to the mall in the early aughts on the rumor that a new BLADERUNNER DVD was to be released that day

Finally owning the set, in HD, and getting the amazing COLLECTORS EDITION so cheaply.. it's literally a dream come true. I'm going to put Gaff's unicorn right on my book case as soon as the set arrives
