Ghostbusters: The Video Game - Page 8

As I was playing and enjoying this immensely, despite it's massive failings, I pondered why my standards are lower for video games than movies. If Ghostbusters 3 came out and had half as many problems as this, I'd be very disappointed and irritated, despite having already pretty much allowed that it's probably not going to be that good. But as a video game, which costs considerably more and requires a much greater time committment, I'm having a great time with this. I must have played some shitty video games in my time.

The cemetery level can eat a dick. Those fucking suicide bomber cherubs are terrible. The fights leading up to the final showdown were much harder than the actual boss fight.
Saw the PS2 version at Target today, and am considering getting it since it's essentially the same as the Wii version that Alex reviewed. Also helps that it's only 20 bucks and my PS3 is a 60g so it's backwards compatible.

I'd like to play the "cartoony" version. Maybe I'll just rent it.

Okay. Could use some help. I'm on the island in the catacombs full of black slime. I'm in the room where you need to drain the black slime. I've used slime tether to pull the two things down for the sewer gate and.... nothing happens. It doesn't open. What the hell?

Nevermind. Even though they went down and clearly clicked into place that wasn't enough. Had to use the capture stream.

I had the exact same problem. I was stuck in that room for a good 5-10 minutes trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.
It's nice that I can go toe to toe with a giant monster and take a few hits before going down, but a little fucking cherub takes me down with one hit every fucking time, and all I have is that moron Ray to maybe pick me up before his dumbass gets knocked down. Yeah, fuck this game.
Played co-op on the Wii last night and it was really fun. Trading in the slicker visuals of the 360 and PS3 for better level design and co-op the Wii version really does stand above the other consoles.

I think the online multiplayer is pretty fun. I'll definitely go back to it when I don't want to blast vaguely Middle Eastern terrorists into oblivion in CoD4. The only thing I don't like is that even though it's co-op, it kind of isn't because the money grab turns it into "every man for himself".

In the Wii version of that level you first have to solve a puzzle that involves dancing skeletons to open the gate for the rest of the guys. Later on you have to open that big door but rather than fighting a bunch of enemies that can knock you out with one hit you have to collect 4 different pieces of an emblem to open it. They're scattered around in areas all lit by different colors (so you know which ones you've been to) and in each place there's either a bunch of enemies to fight or a puzzle. Then you have to slime the piece and carry it to the door to fit it in. Oh, and the cherubs don't knock you down.

It's infinitely better.
Finally got past the cherub bullshit and got to the big boss. Had him within one bar of health, and got knocked down. Oh its okay, the other 4 Ghostbusters are still up. Except that when they come over to me they just stand there until they all fall over like dominoes. Fuck.

I'm considering buying the PS2 version too. If you buy the game at Game Stop, you get e-movie cash of up to 10 bucks that's good until the end of July, essentially making the game 10 dollars. That's really hard to pass up.

I was considering picking up the Wii version because of the motion controls. You're review made it sound even better than I thought. I'll probably wait for a sale or a price drop but I'm definitely going to check it out.

Has anyone else had the problem of stupid teammates like MikeShayne? The AI was generally worthless but they were always Johnny On the Spot when I needed to be revived.
I didn't mind them. Once in a while I'd have to babysit them(Museum says hi), but overall they usually got me back up fairly quickly when I needed it, and they shot at and captured some ghosts.
So I still love capturing ghosts, but really, this game can go fuck itself. I can't remember the last time I had to deal with this much cheap bullshit in a game. I'll play through the story, but I see this one going to Goozex as soon as I'm done. Maybe I'll get some multiplayer in before then, but if not, I can't imagine it'll be too much of a loss.

That being said, I'm hoping for a sequel. They got enough right with the property that I hope they'd really be able to nail the gameplay given a second shot.
I beat the last boss on the third try, and I think I too am pretty much done with this game. The multiplayer, when I actually get a match when I hit quick match (seems like about 10% of the time that it doesn't give me a failure notice), gets pretty old. Wonder how much I can get for this and Infamous.

The multiplayer get old, and like you said, thats when I DO CONNECT without can error. What the hell is with the time limits? blah...I bought a second controller only becasue the box said CO-OP.

just make a sequel this time around..all GTA style.

I haven't had any problems finding a multiplayer match right away. I think I got a "can't find match!" message once.

Another annoying thing about people online-everyone thinks it's necessary to slam ghosts all over the damn map before trapping them. No. Just move the bastard to the trap, let him get off the ground for two seconds to trigger the trap opening, and be on your way.
Got this on Saturday and just started playing earlier today. Initially, I was a little underwhelmed, though I started getting into it a little more as it went on. I'm enjoying the voice-work, for the most part (though, Murray does sound über-quiet, at times.)

Also...

I played about 3 hours today and I agree, the other players are pretty useless. I'm fighting 'The Collector' at the library and fucking Ray and Egon keep getting their asses handed to them, shortly followed by me because I'm silly enough to try and save them.

I wouldn't mind dying so much, but the loading times seem uber long to me (Has anyone else noticed this?).

The load time never bothered me. Its the fact that they show you the SAME FUCKING SCREEN every time you die. Makes the experience all the more painful to sit through.

The load times are ridiculous. I never need to hear the first 30 seconds of "Ghostbusters" again.

Key to win, go through the portals around the room. Once you're through stand at the other side and blast him until he takes down your friends and comes for you. Once he's upon you jump through the portal and revive your friends.
I fucking hated that part. That and the Cherub sequence had me shouting at the useless AI. The Cherub fight being the worst offender.

The final boss was infinitely easier and gave me the least trouble of any of the ingame bosses. I think I died more on Stay Puft than on the final boss. Hilariously though, my partners would get knocked down, I'd revive them and turn around only for them to literally fall down a second later, needing reviving again. Fuck knows what was going on there.

I got about half of the achievements. And I'm totally fine with that, no way am I playing through it again.
Yeah, same here. Beat it, had more than my fair share of fun with it, but I'm in no rush to play it again, if ever.

And yes, the cemetery can go fuck itself.
Is this worth a rental? Especially considering the other games out at the moment? (I'd rather be playing Juarez and FN:R4)
I actually returned it after only a couple of days because the whole time I was playing, I was thinking how much I'd rather just watch Ghostbusters. I thought the shooting felt very inaccurate and it was too, "Hey! You remember the movies, right? Well, now you're PLAYING THEM! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!," which annoyed the piss out of me.
I think if you're going to play the game then just do it on casual and enjoy the presentation etc. Doing it on the harder levels just leads to some frustration that comes close to ruining the game. It's short enough anyway, but definitely worth a rental I'd say.
It's a perfect rental. It has a really fun story, and getting insulted by Bill Murray is well worth the price of admission. At $20-$30, this is a fine buy. It's just the standard $60 tag that would make it a disappointing buy.

I rented it, beat it on hard in 3 days and got every achievement save the online ones and one other. I had a lot of fun, but that's just too short for a full-priced game for me.

The boss fights (and the loading after dying therein) can be a real pain. I cursed at the game and my dumb companions more than once. I probably had to try the cherubs 20 times. The last time, I whipped three into the gate before they even started dive-bombing. An hour of profanity-laden frustration over in 5 seconds. Talk about an anti-climax!
Like it or not, we could be getting more Ghostbusters.

The game only cost $15-20 mil to make, which is lower than I expected, all things considered (not that he has a high price, but Max von Sydow as voice talent? Wow.). And while the game didn't crack the top 10 NPDs (the X360 game made 11th), a million copies have been sold.

I'd of course love another GB game and I'm sure they'll work out the bugs and the mechanics, but they really gotta work on the script, some of the voice acting, and the embarrassing cutscenes. Not just the animation, but the blocking. They need someone on that team that knows how to direct comedy. As for the voice acting, I wonder if having all four actors in the studio at once would have got the improvisational juices flowing. Then again, that's a scheduling nightmare and I don't think anyone will be able to get Murray and Ramis in a room together anytime soon.
Guys, fuck this game. Slater's rage isn't misplaced. The level design in the flooding hotel with the fisherghost is painful. I seriously don't really want to play it any further.

Which is its main appeal for me. Hurm...
And I totally understand that, but it's got that prequel/sequel thing that too many books/movies/tv shows/video games do. They don't try too much new, just remind you of shit you liked the first time. "Hey, listen! Remember than funny line from the first movie? HERE IT IS AGAIN!!!! Isn't it even better the 2nd time? Hey, listen! Wasn't it cool when <blank> did <blank>? Well, instead of trying something original, WE'RE GONNA DO IT AGAIN!!!!" Ghostbusters the game was just one of many straws that broke my camel's back.

That being said, man, I really enjoyed just watching Ghostbusters instead. Waaaaaay more fun.
I think the game does some neat things (I thought tying things into the River of Slime from Pt 2 was a nice touch). But the gameplay is so frustrating. It's only worth playing on casual because the AI is less annoying (They don't get knocked down so much) and the otherwise frustrating sequences aren't so frustrating anymore.

Ok so I'm a massive Ghostbuters nut but the game does not come out on the 360 till the end of the year in the UK. Would I be correct in thinking I would be better off waiting for it's relase than pay the £70 its going to cost me to buy and ship it over here?

Eh, I'd wait for it to come down in price, actually. It's decent if you can get it for $20 or $30, but more than that and you'll be kicking yourself.

Agreed, though I'm starting to think $20 or $30 might even be too much.
You have absolutely no reason to buy this game. Rent it, beat it, futz around in multiplayer until you're bored, and you'll have the complete experience.
Okay honest to goodness guys truth time, if this was just another generic 'shoot at monsters' game without the Ghostbusters brand attached to it, would anyone be giving it a second look?

All I'm really hearing ar a bunch of gamers who also happen to be Ghostbusters fans seemingly making excuses for a game they wouldn't piss on otherwise because of their nostalgia for a beloved old movie - and most of these gamers are the same sort of people who would turn their noses up at shitty modern movie tie in game if the game itself sucked arse.

Fair or no?
It's still worth a rental and/or a $20 deal under those circumstances. There's still a fair share of fun and appreciation to be had that has nothing to do with the more recognizable set pieces.

Probably not, but I think most story-centric games could be dismissed that way.

The action is often fun, and the gameplay is fairly unique. I'd probably have enjoyed the game even if it had been a generic ghost-hunting game w/o the names attached. But the story and the characters elevate it to something memorable.

Totally fair, the game manages to carry itself purely on goodwill.

I don't think the actual Ghost catching mechanic is as broke as people make out it is. I agree the first few times are tricky but after that it's second nature.

But really, it's the goodwill factor that carries the game through its many frustrating moments.

I think that playing the game on Casual provides a much better experience. The frustrating parts are not so frustrating, and your partner AI is better (Ie, doesn't get knocked down all the time).

As my hard drive died, I decided to do a second play through on Hard this time. I'm not having as many frustrations as you guys are having. Then again, I think I'm really fucking good a this game, particularly online. I actually managed to make it in the top 1000 players, which I've never done. Either that or I'm in a sad fraternity of manchildren who have played this game enough to get good at it.

Yes, it rubs your nose in "LOOK! YOU'RE A GHOSTBUSTER!" over and over again, but fuck it, I'm happily letting it slowly slog its way into my nostrils.
