The Office Season 5 Discussion - Page 3

HR just wanting the signatures turned in is one of the most realistic 'office culture' moments the show has ever put up.

Just me, or is Wilson cracking up in the 'Galactica' scene?

Agreed, there should have been something involving Creed and a stash of stolen supplies.

I loved how quickly Jim anticipated Dwight turning around every time and raised his hand with the stopwatch accordingly.

Also loved Dwight's side glance at the camera after his 19 minutes and 48 seconds of "personal time" with Angela.
Like everyone said, the scene with Jim talking about BSG with the stopwatch was great, but the unsung hero of that scene is Andy. As Jim is going on an on about Ewoks in BSG and it being a shot for shot remake Andy is actually believing him even though he has seen the original series, and at the end when Jim said something completely outrageous Andy calmly says "That doesn't sound right at all."

That's the line that got me.

It's the calmness with which he delivers that line which makes it funny. I have a friend who's way into BSG and my thoughts went to him the moment this scene started. I guess many of his friends thought of him too, as they forced him to watch the scene later on.

Fun episode. But now it's too short! An hour is too long, and 30 minutes too short! I can never be happy...

By the way, who's Herc?

"Would you steal bread to feed your family?"
"Trick question. The bread is poisoned."
"Uhhh..."
"Also, they're not your family. You've been cuckolded by a smarter, stronger male."

I'm just dreading what is going to happen between Michael and Holly. No matter what, it is just not going to end well...

That was Dwight's line of the night for me, and lends credence to the "Angela is pregnant" theory.

I guess the censors don't know what a "Golden Shower" is.
"The Simpsons" got a golden shower reference into an episode about 8 years ago.

Figures I missed it. I know the first 9 seasons or so by heart, anything after that is sketchy. Still seems like a joke they'd have to sneak by the censors, though.

Good episode. Pam and Jim plotline is getting a bit predictable again. At least it wasn't the focal point of the episode.
There were some funny moments ("I performed my own circumcision) but The Office needs to remember it's not a drama.

Creed's Omaha Beach line was yet again another gem.

I spit up Gatorade when he said that.

It was the New Springfield episode, fwiw.

QFT. I was laughing too hard at that line and the way he delivered it. And yay to Holly and Michael. I want more of them and less of Jim and Pam. I really like Holly. It's sad knowing she's not going to be on much longer.

And awesome singing voice, Jan....

I'll admit it, I sang along. But I've been drinking/smoking.

Season 12, season premiere I believe. It's sad that I didn't even hesitate to post that.

Ladies, I'm single

There were a couple of things in this episode (Michael hugging Holly for what seemed like an eternity, giving the baby to Phyllis when he realized that it didn't feel right) that gives me hope that Michael Scott isn't a complete social and emotional moron.
I thought it was a great episode. Loved the more "dramatic" moments and Carell was fantastic.
Odd that we never got a payoff on Dwight trying to destroy the stroller.

Loved the Holly/Michael hug. Stuff like that makes the show, as far as I'm concerned.
My new guess is that Holly is a main character in the spin-off. Knowing she's not meant for The Office long term I have a hard time believing that they're going to just cut her loose with how much time and effort they're taking for us all to know and like her.

Dwight had some great moments last night. My favorite part was "Michael was unable to mark the baby. That could be anybody's baby. Except Michael's."

I imagine the scene got cut.

How long is Pam supposed to be away?

Yes. I loved that stuff. And I loved how Michael went down to the warehouse as if Darryl were Don Corleone. This was a great episode for Michael.

I did really like the closure on the Pam/Jim stuff at the end of the episode. In this case, it just seems like the show is showing the difficulties of maintaining a relationship at a distance as opposed to really trying to screw with them for dramatic purposes. The episode does end on them on a bittersweetly positive note.

EDIT: Jan is evil. Also, I loved how her forbidding him to date Holly finally pushed him to actually go for it. And Holly flubbing one joke and then trying to cover it up with another bad joke to Jan was great. "Waaaa, buy paper, waaaa! ... ... She's on a coffee break."
I love how Holly is essentially the female version of MS if he wasn't an asshole. It makes her attraction of MS much more believable.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this can be screwed up in the most uncomfortable fashion possible.

Well, the show runs in pseudo-realtime, so: (1) she's in a 6-month program, and (2) she left in June or July (when did the weight-loss contest start?). Therefore, I'd guess that she'll be back around Christmas/New Years.

Holy shit that Pam/Jim ending was monstrously terrible. And on the heels of something genuinely sweet (the Michael/Holly moment) before it, no less.

Really? I liked it.

It illustrated that they're still in sync and hints that the show isn't going to predictably throw in some third-party love interest to make their separation have impact. The separation, itself, seems to be the point; Jim is bored out of his skull without someone to commisserate with, and Pam's loving her classes, but isn't "moving on" from Jim. She wishes he were there with her.

The show suffers a little without Pam in the office, but it seems like the writers have a plan here.

Yeah, that was really great writing. They both think they aren't "in sync" then their messages prove otherwise.
Well, I think the idea also was that they were both mature enough characters to know that it was just one of those off-days. They don't experience an inability to hear the other person as some excuse to explode into theatrics. They're just kinda bummed about it. And washing lipstick.

Jim's reaction to Pam's story over the phone was pretty realistic, I thought. I've definitely had to listen to those kinds of rambling phone stories where I can't get names and events straight.
I also loved Phyllis taking about how happy she was to be out from under Angela's thumb, and then Mike Scott comes up and treats her exactly the same way.

PUMP FASTER!!!

Three months, I believe. It's a summer program. Unless something changed (I am totally unspoiled).

I loved the ending with Jim and Pam, because it struck me as being very well-written and real. I also found it reassuring, because it doesn't seem that they're going to do the silly, high-drama television relationship thing with them. They're together, they're communicating, and they're happy. Well done.

Michael + Holly = adorable. I love that she teared up when he hugged her. I'm not looking forward to how that's going to fall apart.
Was anyone else reminded of a similar scene long time ago when Jim is bummed about not having had a chance to talk to Pam all day (I can't remember the situation) but then checks his messages at night to find a ton of messages from Pam?

It's cool that they managed to do a scene that felt similar but didn't feel like a retread. If this new episode had showed each of them actually HEARING their respective messages, it probably wouldn't have been as good.

That's what I thought, but if so then she should be back in a week or so (based on the weight loss challenge taking up 2 months of the summer).

I dread the Michael - Holly parting.

Angela and Andy putting Assterd in the little thanksgiving-vegetable-whatever-the-hell-it-was was aces.

And yes, that story Pam tries to tell Jim is totally realistic. Many times have I experienced the "Oh? Oh uh...that's funny...oh it's not funny? Okay...who was it again?"

They were trying to do an Anne Geddes shoot.

And the payoff with Dwight and the stroller was his casual "I took the liberty of putting it in your trunk."
The Michael and Darryl stuff was great.

"You're not a babydaddy!"

"Do you feel connected to his baby?" "Do you feel connected to this?" (Holding up plastic bag)

I had to explain to my husband what a 'golden shower' was. God, he is so innocent sometimes.

Jan singing was a highlight. I was half expecting her to whip out a boob and start breastfeeding right there.
My wife didn't know what a golden shower was either. I decided to let her continue leading a charmed life and didn't bother explaining.
I, on the other hand, was waiting for the golden shower joke.

I'm not sure what this says about me.

No suggestions, please.
I had to look up "Golden Shower" on Urban Dictionary. Guess I don't get out much...

I thought it was a good episode. Not terribly funny, but very sweet. Except for Jan, of course. What a beeyotch. Ah, the joys of post-partum hormones (although I don't think that's a viable excuse for Jan).

Also, I used to think the name Astrid was cute, but henceforth, I will always think "ass-turd."

Michael's long long hug, combined w/Holly's teary eyes, sealed the deal for me. I love Holly and am dreading her inevitable falling-out/departure. I also enjoyed the Jim/Pam conversation, even if it was a bit contrived. I like that the writers are keeping them a "real-life" couple; hopefully they'll stay out of soap opera territory.

Darryl's conversation with Michael was tops.

More "Angela-is-pregnant" clues; she got so offended by Andy not recognizing her baby picture & calling him a "pervert" for liking Phyllis' picture.

I also loved the scene when Jan described her tub birth, and everyone walking out of the room in disgust.
I just thought it was too on-the-nose and edit-focused on a show that doesn't have its reality based in that. But I'm also pretty bored by Pam and Jim's relationship so far this season.

I feel the same way. I mean, it's pretty predictable, despite Pam not finding another guy at school, which would have been cliched and kind of soap opera-ish. The Pam and Jim story lines have been my least favorite part of every one of the episodes this season.
I liked it a lot. Specially Michael and Holy.
The random shot of Creed bandaging his foot was great.
Once again, Creed has the best moments of the episode.
I want bad things to happen to Roy.

great moments:

Michael confusing Bruce Springsteen with Huey Lewis
"The last person who stole from me disappeared. His name was Creed Bratton."
"I could use a hug. Will you give me one?" "Not here!"
the ominous last line.
Just when things were going right for Michael Scott ...
Gonna miss Amy Ryan. Lots. That character has succeeded more than even the writers might have expected.
Ryan's dorkiness is adorable in all the ways Michael's is not.
