The Office Season 5 Discussion - Page 16

I think my favorite moment was the Vance refrigeration guy watching Erin dance from the hallway.

I loved the feel-good ending of the season. The character moments were so good and so fun. My only question is where was Toby?

"I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure I'm in a dance-off!"

Just a couple minutes later Kevin and his girl were necking against the wall. I couldn't stop laughing.

What was it that Dwight said to Phyllis when she asked him to dance.? Something like, "Normally I would say no, but a) she need to loosen the muscles in her back and b) this is great song!"

I expected Meredith to be a little more crazy on the dance floor, but the danceoff was pretty great.
Did anyone else expect something truly horrible to happen at the end of this episode?
It was a nice break from the tense craziness of the Idris Elba arc. But for as fun as it was, it still had one of the most sad lines I think I've heard on the show. "Might as well call it dinner." Good lord. Holly needs to come back.
Wasn't Holly supposed to make another appearance at the end of this season?

Such a fun episode. Dwight treating Phyllis like a horse.... SO funny.

If there was ever a way to show how all these employees both loathe and have a lot of affection for Michael, this was it. I bought it.

Who was the actor who played Erin's visitor friend? You barely got to see her face.

Really cute episode. The only bad thing about it was the slightly creepy B-plot about Dwight massaging Phyllis, who is worried that Bob's cheating on her. I have a bad feeling that may come up again later.

Plus, I was tickled pink by Andy & Kelly's dance-off. Here's hoping she didn't pierce his "gay" ear afterwards.
I thought Phyllis' husband asking her to dance quelled the affair rumor. He was quite smitten with her.

Also, Holly makes an appearance in the finale.
Oh, I thought the Cafe Disco episode WAS the finale. Cool cool.

I don't think so. Even Phyllis' laughter right after the reveal seemed genuine, that these thoughts bouncing around in her head were totally ridiculous.

I did like that they made Bob's receptionist look exactly like her only younger.

I loved that Stanley was asleep in his chair while everyone else was in Cafe Disco.

Nah, that was a sweet litle callback to Dwight and Phyllis being friends-remember she reached out to him when all the Angela stuff went down and he had that little angry epiphany during an interview to camera. "She tried to be my friend!"

The first half of this episode was not working for me, but ultimately it just won me over. I'm always surprised when they can find new ways for Dwight to be hilarious. It seems like such a one note character, and yet he's consistantly been my favorite for five years. Credit Rainn Wilson.

And Ed Helms turned out to be a fantastic addition to this show. I think I'll have to watch The Hangover just for him.

He wasn't sleeping. He's dead. Break out the paddles!

Does anyone else think the obvious answer is for Jim and Pam to have their wedding at Schrute Farm?

Couldn't agree more. I was wary of his casting in the beginning, but he's turned out to be a terrific addition to the ensemble.

I could see that. I liked the suggestion that after hanging out in Cafe Disco they realized that they actually wanted these people at their wedding.

He DID have a heart attack... hmmmmm.
I'll third or fourth the Ed Helms love, as well. The character has gone from obnoxious to weirdly endearing.
Can anyone explain why Andy calls Jim tuna? I must have missed that episode.
From my recollection, it was simply because Jim had a tuna sandwich for lunch one day (back when he worked at the other branch) and Andy really wanted to give Jim a nickname.

I think it was actually his first day at the other branch but that's how I remember it as well.
Thanks. I missed the whole season at the other branch. Never bothered to catch up.

That same episode (I think it was) that Andy gave him the Tuna nickname was memorable just because Jim played the same joke he'd played on Dwight by putting Andy's stapler in jello and Andy goes absolutely nuclear.
That was a damn fine ending to a season (branch closing awkwardness aside).

I concur. Put a smile on my face. Well done.
I don't know, the Jim/Pam reveal was a little weak in my opinion. Who knows...maybe I'm just tired of that relationship.

On the positive side, I loved everything dealing with Dwight in this episode. That's the first time I've been able to say that this season. I laughed my ass off when he kicked the volleyball into the woods.
I'm 50/50 on the "reveal" - who didn't see it coming and we're now headed in that direction five seasons in. On the other hand, Daniels & Co. were to able to keep the relationship interesting and enduring even after season three. So...they'll make it work imo.

I also loved the sadness yet determination of Michael to fight for Holly.
Damn, it took me off guard that this finale was only half an hour.
I kind of hope they're done with the hour long episodes. They always tend to lose steam about 40 minutes in. Thirty minutes is about all they can do.
Part of me wanted this to be an hour-long, but I actually liked the pacing of this episode. Pretty good closure to the season.

My heart was breaking for Michael, but it seems pretty obvious they can't have Amy Ryan all the time and this is what has to be done. Here's hoping they can move on.

And I actually teared up a bit at the Jim/Pam reveal, if only because that's almost exactly how I got the "news" about my oldest daughter (I was in a hospital for some follow-up X-rays, and just to be safe, I took a test, and --what do you know?). Schmaltzy--yes, but not unbelievable.
Goddamn, that final interview with Michael was fucking heartbreaking.
I loved that the entire branch got along. I really like that these past couple of episodes there has been almost no internal conflict, but these characters started acting like they really care about each other and are friends.

Great finale.

Stringer and Beady!
Loved the way Stanley was totally enjoying himself with his drink in hand.

The whole office getting along really was the point of this season finale. Beginning with the cold opening. Made me happy.

Seriously, Michael becomes totally normal and worthy of my sympathies when he's with Holly.
Regardless of how much I hate the character, I can't avoid admiring Idris Elba's performance as Charles. There's not even drop of Stringer Bell in him.

Idris Elba should be headlining like he's Denzel Washington.
Well considering Obsessed has taken in over $50 million, we may have found the next great Black leading man who can back up his talents with Box Office receipts.

Great Finale. This was damn near a perfect episode. I find Jim and Pam refreshing in that they aren't the main storyline and there is no "forced" conflict.
Dwight was the highlight of this ep. Loved his uber-competitiveness on the volleyball court, his defense of Angela, and his stall tactics for Pam and Jim.

Stanley and Phyllis were hilarious in their brief scenes. I especially loved Phyllis literally sitting down on the volleyball court, and later complaining about a twisted ankle then proceeding to run off the court.

The Jim/Pam reveal at the end wasn't at all surprising, but none-the-less very sweet. I particularly liked that they were so happy. Its rare to see a young couple not react negatively to news that they are having a baby.

He was just as retarded as ever, and completely delusional about their relationship. I would almost feel sorry for him, if I didn't hate him so much.

Yes, exactly. Retardation and delusions are very normal parts of relationships. Hahaha.

I think it really helped that he was generally pretty calm in this episode. No tantrums. No screaming/shouting. Plus he had a partner in crime who is just as dorky as he is. Dulls the pain.

Toby: "This reminds me of the HR convention last fall."
Corporate Toby: "Oh yeah, with Bernie and Ephram. It was hilarious."
Toby: "Really really funny."
Corporate Toby: "Reeaallly funny."

The only thing I didn't like about the Jim/Pam reveal was how it aped the Tim/Dawn final talk in the British version but didn't do it as well. And this is coming from somebody who hates all the comparisons to the two versions.

The Charles character is fantastic. I actually get mad on Jim's behalf whenever he opens his mouth.
Yeah, it would have been a bit of a stretch but I was really hoping Jim was going to throw down with Charles. Charles was acting like a total dick.
I can't tell you how much I love having a relationship on TV that operates like it's between two adults who actually care for each other. I know there's no drama in this but I wish more shows could do what The Office did with Pam and Jim.
When the nurse mentioned Pam shouldn't get an X-ray if she was pregnant and nothing was said, I figured that wasn't a possibility. Nice way to bring up the possibility, dismiss it, and then have it be a surprise when it happens.

Thought the same thing as I watched it. My guess is that it was because I wasn't really all that curious about what was being said between Jim and Pam. It's pretty obvious. With Tim and Dawn, I was like, "C'moooon! I wanna know what they're saying!" And this was even after Tim comes out and says, "She said no, by the way."

The US version has done this silent moment before this though, haven't they?

I envy you. I wish there were episodes I hadn't seen yet. Season 3 is really really good by the way.
My one complaint: Where was Kelly? I would've loved to have seen her playing volleyball.
We had new Kelly playing it. I hope she stays. She's adorable.

Weren't the creators in talks with Ryan to try and get her on more next season as more of a regular thing? Fingers crossed...

I've worked for a Charles before. They can be as rude as they want to you and you can't possibly fight back at all. Feel Jim's pain there.

And here's hoping Dwight and Angela eventually get back together. I just watched "Traveling Salesman" again, and I was reminded of just how weirdly touching those two were together.
I thought it was awesome that Doc Venture was Dwight's best friend, that was great.
Holy shit, that was him? How did I miss that...

I officially hang up my geek cred.
