The only Shyamalan movie (haven't seen The Happening, yet) that does absolutely nothing for me is Lady in the Water. I gave it a second chance on DVD and reacted to it, moment for moment, as I did the first time around, which was surprising to me.

But I'll give it this: even if it's a failure (which I think it is), it fails on its own terms. I can get behind that. And I'm always very intrigued when people tell me they liked it.

I can't say that entirely agree with you on Signs, Erik. I think that its flaws just barely tip the scales to failure, even though there a few incredibly well done sequences. The home video is still one of the creepiest things made.
But your take on The Village really makes me want to see it again. I remember being so shocked by what happens to Phoenix and surprised that no review even mentioned that bit. And it's a shame that the "twist" overshadows some great work by Deakins. The film is beautiful.

I don't want to take the guy for granted because he's an odd duck filmmaker who appeals to the mainstream. We don't have enough of those. However, his writing seems to have seriously deteriorated. I don't see how that can be denied.

I should add, I've never read such an interesting take on The Village as yours. I think the movie is a very small step down. At this point though, he's falling down the stairs.

Thanx for reading guys... I also took a moment to "defend" Lady in the Water.

Check it out: http://chud.com/articles/blogs/694/S...The-Jesus.html

I'm glad you think my take on The Village may merit it another look. You may continue to dislike it, even then, but the fact I made you curious is interesting. I still think that movie deserved a better than it got. The reviews just trashed it without conceding any of its good points. In particular, Rex Reed's piece is one of the worst bits of "criticism" I've ever read in my life. But, fuck Rex Reed. Ebert hated it too, but at least he did so with actual wit.

By the way, I've decided to keep all my blog posts restricted to one thread, as Nick ordained in his "memo". This is my original blog thread: http://chud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108869

So, if we're going to discuss, let's keep it going over there. Thanx.

I'll be chiming in on your blogs as well. I like being a part of this community. That Sam Strange blog is a pretty original way to dissect movies. Kudos, dude.

Rex Reed is a crazy old man not worth taking seriously. Ebert's review is more interesting (as is his Lady in the Water review) because he was a staunch supporter of Shyamalan from The Sixth Sense to Signs. He was also one of maybe two "top" critics to write about The Happening favorably.
