I'm gonna die if the media doesn't shut up about Russert.
He's getting more press than the deaths of Reagan, Diana, and John Lennon combined.

But frankly andrew its exactly the same here - and in the uk if I recall when I was there. When given the oppurtunity to fellate itself, mainstream media will happily have those two ribs removed and turn stuff like this into a gigantic back-patting exercise....

Geez, what a surprise that MSNBC is going to be covering this all the time. You watch the other networks and that is not the case, stop being outraged over nothing.

Yes, everyone, just shut up and take it.
I wasn't saying that per se, I was just pointing out that the problem has been going on for longer than Tim Russert was alive.

I've been reading through this thread and just noticed this. According to Neilsen's overnights for yesterday (I think the first number is overall viewers and the number in parentheses is the 25-54 demo):

Quote:
8PM - P2+ (25-54)
The O’Reilly Factor- 2,892,000 viewers (686,000)
CNN Election Center– 826,000 viewers (214,000)
Countdown w/ Olbermann – 1,241,000 viewers (414,000)
Fast Money- 149,000 viewers (54,000)
Nancy Grace – 614,000 viewers (242,000)

And here are two week-long looks at the head-to-head ratings in June. Olbermann will occasionally top O'Reilly in the 25-54 demographic. But O'Reilly seems to consistently double the amount of total viewers Olbermann gets. Honestly, it just floors me that every weeknight a combined 4 million people will watch partisan blowhards yelling at the other side to shut the hell up.

As for Russert, I tend to agree with what El Capitan has written. I loved watching Meet the Press. He was a tough, but professional interviewer and moderator. He could always be counted on to throw the guest's words back at them when they acted or spoke in a contrary manner. For those with a fondness for the hyper-partisan commentators on cable news, Russert probably came across as timid. To me, he was a professional. He'll be missed in my household.

Crazy. That's what I get for listening to anecdotal stuff rather than actually using my brain and looking at the Nielsen ratings. Thanks, JVC.

Funny thing is I had heard the same thing you did and sort of took it for granted for the last few months that Olbermann's numbers were bigger. If it weren't for my weird obsession with Googling everything I possibly can, I wouldn't have come across these numbers. I do know that Olbermann's numbers have skyrocketed in the last year or two. Or, wait. Maybe they haven't. Back to Google!

I believe Olberman is counting DVR to boost his overall number. You know, because the kids are hip to the technology.
No, all of the Olbermann stories -- at least the several that I saw -- were about how he was leading in the younger demographic. I suppose some people took it the wrong way.
Nielsons usually includes DVR in their published data, but you have to watch it within two hours (or three hours?)
From what i have read, Olbermann only beat O'Reilly in the 25-54 adults demographic.

O'Reilly is still up overall. That said, the 25-54 demo is what matters.

I guess Americans are more inclined to listen to a liberal, self-absorbed blowhard than a conservative, self-absorbed blowhard.

For all his blowhardery, Olbermann covers a lot of important stories the corporate media won't touch with a 15 meter cattle prod -- like hacking the vote, the political prosecution of Gov. Siegelman, etc. I can put up with his self-important rants for the important work he does.

But Olberman is part of the "corporate media".

I can't stand the guy anymore. As their shows grow more popular, the annoyance and arrogance factor goes up.

More reasons to miss Tim and his presence in Meet the Press ...

I think you're piling on the Olbermann hate too much. yt's got it right. He's the only one in the mainstream media who is talking about some of these crucial issues. Sometimes he takes himself way too seriously, but his show is produced with a sense of humor so that helps.

Considering there's about a dozen right-wing television blowhards for every Olbermann, I'd give the guy some leeway.

Plus, the guy can be funny - really funny - when the mood strikes.
