Final Crisis: WTF? - Page 2

What a shocking ending. I mean I really didn't see that coming.
New Gods lineage question? Orion is Darkseid's son, but who is High Father's. I thought it was Kalibak but others say it's Scott Free.
Scott Free is Highfather's son who he traded with Darksied. Kalibak is Darkseid's hairy loser son.
So in the latest issue, the New God who I think is Granny Goodness, thinks she's talking to Darkseid but in reality is talking to Orion, who might be able to pass as Darksied in his new flesh suit?

I don't understand the DC hate here, is this a thread for Marvel angst or something? Geoff Johns and Paul Dini have made a lot of "fun" issues with their runs on Green Lantern and Detective Comics. Morrison's stuff on Batman has been compelling to say the least, but I can see why people are still iffy about it.

What has Marvel done lately? Primate Super Heroes? A red Hulk?

Thats sucks, but glad to see he wrote that many scripts; if the new creative team doesnt appeal to m, ill be dropping the title.

Well they haven't done that yet. It's solicited for September I think.

And DC already did it.

I'm guessing in Countdown or some other Crisis?

Still, what a dumb idea.
I'm not getting the hate. FC #2 is self contained, the plot is advancing, big name heroes are being brought down, future plot developments are being foreshadowed, and the big return moment is promising for issue #3 to really pick up on the action. Evil is winning, convincingly.

Yeah, it's not the greatest thing that Morrison has ever done, but it's also not reliving the past ala Infinite Crisis or threatening to go off the rails into sleaziness and plot illogic ala Identity Crisis. Nor are the heroes apparently going to be running around in the Savage Land for at least half the event in order to pad out the series for more tie-ins. Yeah, that's setting the bar pretty low, but I think it's at least reasonable to say that it's still more promising than a lot of recent events.

No, it was back when DC did Annuals in their titles that were all part of an event. It was under the title JLApe.

Fuck. Reading that made my ballbag ache.

So...Turpin's possessed by Darkseid, right? That's why the Apokoliptians are greeting him warmly in this issue, and why he gets all violent on the Mad Hatter.
Yeah, I had to go back and check the first issue. Dark Side says the human bodies decay fairly quickly and at that point he must have jumped from Dark Side to Turpin; which is funny considering Darkseid kills Turpin in the Superman Animated Series.

I always hated that because it would have been easy to bring Turpin back. Darkseid's omega beams also transport people. When they had Darkseid come back again it should have shown Turpin on Apokolips startin some shit.
I like parts of Final Crisis...mostly the Green Lateren parts.

Still better then Secret Invasion.
Yeah, I don't get the hate. It's shaping up to be a sequel to Morrison's Seven Soldiers "Mister Miracle" series...how's that a bad thing?

I can't speak to Final Crisis, as I'll probably just wait to read the trade when the library gets it, but that reaction doesn't surprise me, as Mr Miracle was the one series of Seven Soldiers that seemed to find disfavor with even a lot of GM's disciples.

Wasn't all that wild about it myself, though I think it might have turned out better had DC allowed Ferry to finish the art.

That would have undermined the whole Superman/Darkseid relationship in the animated series, though. Darkseid is the only being in the universe that Superman truly HATES, with every fibre of his being. Largely because of the whole 'brainwashing him and turning him against Earth' thing, but the root of it was the murder of Dan Turpin.

As long as DC is making a lot of money for Warner's,Didio's job is safe . If he leaves, it will because somebody made him a better offer.
The stockholders and management don't care how big a rut DC is stuck in as long as it is a profitable rut.
I just can't figure any of this shit out, and I've been reading comics for 15 years.

Granted, I'm not the biggest DC fan, but between Batman, Superman, The Flash, etc, couldn't they have come up with something just a little more accessible than this?

The whole concept of The New Gods is such a weird and specific niche thing. I don't know any of these characters, and this is supposed to be DC's answer to Secret Invasion?
Just one question:

Why does Morrison apparently insist on rebranding 'Darkseid' as 'Dark Side'?

He did it in the Mister Miracle mini, and from what I've heard he's doing again in this series.

What a bizarre and unimaginative choice.
The ending of Issue 3 was brilliant. Great issue. It's finally gathering some steam. Apparently I need to read Seven Soldiers now.

There's been speculation about post-Final Crisis DC. Did Neil Gaiman just let something slip?

Quote:
“It’s one of those things where they phoned me up and said, ‘This is what we’d like you to do,’” Gaiman started to say. “It wasn’t even ‘This is what we’d like you to do,’ it was, ‘This is what’s going to be happening with Batman. Would you like to write the last issue of Batman and the last issue of Detective Comics?’ And when they make an offer like that, you say yes.”
The last issue of Batman and Detective? Maybe Final Crisis IS the Final Crisis for the DCU and a full reboot is on the way.
You're half right.
You know what's been kicking my ass? How awesome the Final Crisis Legion mini-series is.

So fucking awesome for all LOSH fans.
So has the miniseries been put on hold or something?

The last issue I have is #3, and I'm pretty sure I bought that back in August.

There was a skip month built into the schedule between #3 and #4, so the next issue SHOULD be this month.

That said, there seems to have been a few delays on the ancillary titles and minis so... who knows.

The final issue just showed up in the January solicits, so I guess they think they're on track to release monthly from here on out.

I did notice that JG Jones wasn't listed as the artist in #7, though.
They wanted a month off between issues three and four to allow Jones to play catch up on the art, but he didn't quite make it.

From what my dealer was telling me, they also wanted to give the surrounding titles a chance to play catch up. BTW anyone check out that Superman 3D book? It's so fucking awesome.

Doug Mahnke or Pacheco on the final issue now?
Mahnke.
Final Crisis #4 came out.

Better stuff there. Still, a lot of material from Final Crisis: Submit could've been cribbed into 4 to make it fuller. Still, there was a lot of good stuff all around.
If you took Submit and FC #4 and smashed them together, it would have been a very, very good comic.

Mahnke. Jones issued a public apology a day or two ago, and said DM should have been drawing the whole series.
Yeah, I read the apology. Honestly, J.G. Jones is a cover artist only. He gets a lot of smoke blown up his ass about his interiors.

I love what they're setting up with the Flashes and Tattooed Man. But, Legion of 3 Worlds is still my preferred FC series.

Johns is killing with it.
Legion of 3 Worlds in great...seriously they could blow up the whole DC universe as long as they had that book for all I care.
Comics are at the point where unless it's Green Lantern, Batman or Vertigo I couldn't care less. There's a bunch of small titles I read, but as for the big stuff that's about it now. Superman and Action Comics have been good too, with Action Comics being the better title out of the Superman mythos now that All-Star Superman is gone.
I got the first three Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibuses from the library, and this series makes a whole lot more sense. I mean, I knew the basics of the Apokolips/New Genesis conflict before, but seeing how Morrison riffs on specific Kirby stories helps.

I'm at the same point, and have been for the last three years really.

I was purchasing an average of 8 trades a month two years ago, now I'm lucky if I purchase one.

And for "fun" I wiki'd 52, Countdown, and Final Crisis.

How can anybody make sense out of all of that crap?

You're absolutely right, its almost required reading for this series. Having read those omnibuses, Final Crisis is really kicking ass. Now where are the tiny soldiers and the newsboy legion?

The Newsboy Legion was in Seven Soldiers: Manhattan Guardian (and were scattered through the other SS titles, as well), another series that will probably benefit from a reread with the omnibuses under my belt.

I was genuinely surprised to see them bring back Symian and Mokarri, and to have them using command-D. One thing that confuses me though, wasn't Sonny Sumo stuck in the past last he was seen in Forever People?
If you're following either Final Crisis or Green Lantern (especially) make sure you pick up the Rage of the Red Lanterns tomorrow. The art is great and Johns knocks it out of the park story-wise.

Y'know, after my spleen-cleansing rant a page ago, I decided to put my money where my mouth was, and pick up two DC books. I've been complaining about the lack of fun and quality, but there's a part of me that wants to be wrong. I'd heard that they'd given the MArtian Manhunter a nice send-off in FC:Requiem, so I bought that and FC 1. Then, because you're a consistent GL supporter, I picked up the Sinestro Corp. book from a little while back.

Them's some good comics.

I've tried sampling some others since then, but the results have been mixed to negative. GL and FC, however, are kinda awesome in the best sort of imaginative, idea-laden, fraught-with-danger/evil, yet still hopeful way.

I may still think that the industry's landscape is littered with grim-n-gritty nonsense, but Morrison and Johns really impressed me. I've become a regular GL reader, and I dug the heck out of FC 4. Part of that has to do with my childhood fascination over Kirby's Fourth World stuff, but a lot of it has to do with Morrison's writing - so far, it strikes me as some of his most "linear" work and I think it's better for that fact.

It's nice to be wrong sometimes is, I think, the point I'm trying to make.
You certainly picked a good title to try out in Green Lantern. It's been DC's (and maybe all of mainstream comics') most consistent book since Green Lantern: Rebirth and at this point anything with a Geoff Johns byline gets me interested. I'm glad you enjoyed it and Final Crisis, which has been exactly what I hoped for so far.

Check out Seven Soldiers. It's not really "linear" (just the opposite), but it's something akin to brilliant.
