DVD Shelving

Thread Starter
My DVD collection keeps growing and the Mrs. has decided it's time for some new organization. I've been looking around at different shelving options, and can't really find something that fits my needs.
I'm looking to shelve about 300 DVDs, with shelving that is more vertical than horizontal (the taller the better), and which I don't have to pay more than $100 on.
Any suggestions?

Since you live in Brooklyn- National Wholesale Liquidators. I got my cheap particleboard unit there for 50 bucks. Holds about 500.

Ikea has a great $20 bookcase. It might be larger horizontally than you have space for, but they have some great, cheap options.

There are great shelving units available, vairous manufacturers, that are units that rotate on a pedestal -- I have a four-sided affair that spins. It's about 4 feet tall, makes a 2'x2' footprint and holds about 300.

Just don't be lame and put it in a CD booklet.

I second ikea, cheap stuff.

Another totally different option:
You could also just buy an external hard drive and rip them and try to setup a streaming media network. Might take some time and work depending on what equipment you have. We keep a tetrabyte hard drive next to the PS3 filled with movies and music. All the CDs and DVDs are kept in the basement in a box.

I saw what you did on your Twitter. You threw all your DVD cases away.

How could you? How could you?!!!

I hit up a Best Buy outlet and got a three part 1280 interlinking unit for about 150 dollars.

I had to replace an older case that broke.

I've got over 1500 DVDs and am moving to a new apartment (you know those file storage boxes you can get at Staples? I filled like 30 something boxes) and everything I've found is both too expensive and doesn't hold enough. I think I'm going to have this builder person I know build me something to my specs.

I'm to this point as well. I don't have 1,000 DVDs, but I probably have 200-300 or so, and my cleanup goal for this year is to get everything off the floor. I've got 4 different mechanisms for holding DVDs right now, and almost all of them are full.

For my CDs, which I have many more of, I'm ripping them all to my computer, then boxing them up and will store them...somewhere. Don't want to put them in the attic because of the drastic weather changes. I guess I'll stack them in a guest room closet somewhere.

Went with two of the Atlantic Oskar multimedia storage things. Says it holds 504 dvds, and best buy had 'em for 100 bucks (while amazon had them for 140). Reviews on them are middling, some saying they're great and some saying they're pieces of shit. I'll put them together when I move in this weekend. Might get another one if they work out and I have the room. Figure I'll put one on each side of this TV stand I bought. Should look pretty good.

I did it, and I'd do it again! Bwahahahaha!

Threw away all my cd cases as well. It's very freeing, you should try it.

My father-in-law built me a custom solid oak case that has two cupboards with 4 sliding drawers each. Whole thing holds at about 1,000 DVDs. However, I've had to buy an IKEA shelf to hold the spillover so I've reorganized it to hold all my "steelbook" and other collectible types. I don't know how much longer I can realistically support this. Blurays help with their smaller cases; however, at the rate I buy them I'll quickly run out of room again! I try and purge my collection of duplicates/unwanted every year or so, but I've pretty much tapped out that option at this point.

What I want is a design like http://www.mmdesign.com/ DiscSox but cheaper... I can't justify spending $2000 bones on dvd cases. The prices they're charging are unreal! But this solution really is perfect for the enthusiast.

I love those shelves. I have three of those big ones and six of the smaller ones. We had to split the DVDs throughout the house because we have so many shelves. One small one in my son's room, my wife has two in the bedroom for "her" DVDs, there are two in the living room with Blu Rays and Criterians on it and the rest are in the guest room.

According to DVDProfiler, I'm up to 2300

I used to clock in around 3000, but I've been streamlining.
