Film Festivals and Contests: How useful are they?

Is there a specific contest that is best to register for?

What type of experience have some of you had in terms of their value? What type of advice would you offer to someone thinking about entering one? And I guess more specifically, what type of advice would you offer for someone trying to get their short film off the ground? Are contests the best route?

Apologies for the noob questions.

Use www.withoutabox.com . It's the best way to track down the best rated, best attended, and best costing festivals to submit to so you don't waste your money.

And festivals are, without a doubt, incredibly useful--even if you don't screen in competition, your work is still up there on the big screen, and more often than not there will be a director's luncheon that lets you network with all kinds of industry people. I screened Cup of Joe in New York last summer and made a LOT of contacts that have come in handy.

If it's a festival that's close enough that you can personally attend, absolutely take the opportunity to see your movie with an audience. At the very least you'll get to hear a lot of battle stories from other filmmakers and learn from their mistakes, find out cheap ways of making your own equipment, or guys that will build equipment for you for a modest fee.

Thanks for the link. I've only been able to take a peak but it looks fantastic.

Cup of Joe?

My friend who I've been working with writing shorts and features (unofficial ones of course) got a part in a small film with the exact same title here in SA. Coincidence?

Well, we shot it using theatre majors from SHSU in November/December 2006, so unless he went to school there, I guess it's a coincidence. Here's the imdb link so you can check...:
