don't worry, my next one will definitely be about film. It's television's off season...

I agree with your about Californication. It's definitely a guilty pleasure show for me right now. Duchovny truly is a master of dry with and hopefully he does springboard from this into a better movie career.

Then we can watch the dry wit cage match between him and Robert Downey Jr we've all been waiting for.

I discovered the joy of Danish film several years ago...after seeing Mads Mikkelsen in 'King Arthur' (the best thing about that movie).
They certainly know how to make memorable movies.

Green Butchers, After the Wedding, Flickering Lights, Brothers, Open Hearts....I could go on... I'm looking forward to see what you think of the Pusher Trilogy...Awesome films!!

Oh wow! You just named all my favs! Well, I haven't seen Brothers yet, but that's next after Pusher 3. What's the deal with these guys? Got any more recommendations? I may have exhausted netflix's reserves but maybe I missed a few. I got everything I could attached to Anders Thomas Jensen, Mads, Susanne Bier, Ulrich Tomson, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and the dude in Pusher, cant recall his name right now. But theyre missing so many I want to see! I also got some Lars von Trier on there but I think he's a very different type of filmmaker and now he's basically Hollywood anyway....
Mmmm....Lars Von Trier just doesn't do it for me. I don't know how he became so important to the Danish film industry, the few films of his I've seen are crap if you ask me. So I'm not interested in seeing any more.

But Anders Thomas Jensen, Susanne Bier, Ole Christian Madsen, Nicolas Winding Refn...they are great filmmakers!

Have you seen Adam's Apples? I love that one too! How about Bleeder, or Vildspor, or Prag? (All of those star Mads )
Or try Nattevagten (the original Danish version of Nightwatch starring Ewan McGregor in the US) - it stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (recently seen on US TV in New Amsterdam).

I also loved Kinamand, a great little film that doesn't star any of the big names I've come to know from Danish cinema.

Another good Danish drama is Fetsen (The Celebration) - has Ulrich Thomsen & Paprika Steen.

Oh and Reconstruction! That's a good one too! A little confusing...but very good. Stars Nikolaj Lie Kaas - I think I got that on the Netflix used DVD sale for 5.99 or something.

Kira's Reason is a good one too....with Mads older brother, Lars Mikkelsen.

See what you started!! LOL!

I'm sure I can come up with more, if I think about it....

hmmmm cool. Agree with von Trier...not the best from his own country. Netflix doesn't have those Mads films except Prag which is just a save for a "unknown release date." Where did you see those? There's a bunch of Jensen films not on netflix like Stealing Rembrandt, Clash of Egos and a few more from the last 2 years or so. Have you seen any of those, if so, where?

I had to buy a multi-region DVD player several years ago just feed addiction to Danish films. I order a lot from Denmark and some from amazon.uk.

I have been wanting to see Clash of Egos! It looks hilarious! (In that Danish sort of way of course.)

I just ordered that set about 4 days ago because a trusted friend told me to watch it, all three, in a sitting. That's how much he loved the films.

Plus anything with Mads Mikkelsen tends to be watched by me at any given time.

So reading the review of the series from you gives me even more hope. Great article.

I can assure you that you won't be disappointed! If you want come back round here and share your thoughts.

I saw the entire trilogy back-to-back a few years ago at the Toronto Film Festival....oh man....they are amazing! I had seen the first one (I'm a huge Mads fan) and had been dying to see the 2nd (my favorite too) and so I made a special trip to see them and it was SOOO worth it! (Plus we had the added bonus of actually meeting Mads and NWR) Each film can stand on it's own, but you get so much more out of them when you have the others to look back on.

I think Pusher 2 is one of my favorite movies...ever.

Interesting.

But you really should make it a point to watch some of his films. There is an auteur quality to them. They're awful. But awfully interesting as well. I have fun following the "evolution" of his career.

(Incidentally, One of his early movies - Heart of America - is not that bad. There's a clunky ineptness to it, but it seems like a promising student film and worth watching for that reason)

By the way, he doesn't think Michael Bay is a good director. He hates him and puts him as an example of what's wrong with Hollywood today and why his work is so much more worthwhile.

As for how he keeps making movies? Maybe some of them look "okay" on paper. They seem to be accessible genre projects with brand name recognition. Or maybe people thing he's a genius in Germany. That's where he gets most of his money. Probably because of a tax shelter.
