Timothy Spall (Peter Pettigrew from Harry Potter) gets to go completely scene-chewing nuts in this Danny Boyle directed, made for BBC tv movie.
The story centers around Pete, an unemployed young man who gets a job as a vacuum salesman in order to keep his girlfriend from working as a strip-o-gram stripper. He is assigned to be mentored by Tommy Rag (Spall), an incredibly aggressive and morally bankrupt salesman who will literally do anything to close a deal.
The story seems to have a touch of Swimming with Sharks and Glengarry Glen Ross as we watch Pete try and figure out the world of sales and Tommy tries to lock up the "Best Salesman of the Year" award. As mentioned before, Spall is just batshit crazy, and a real pleasure to watch. It's also easy to recognize this is a Danny Boyle film from the wonky camera angles and accelerated scenes.
All in all, this was entertaining (I'm simply amazed at what you can show on European television - nudity and more f-bombs than you can shake a stick at) because of the performances of the main cast, but definitely not Boyle's finest work. Worth a rental though, especially if you're a fan of Trainspotting, etc.
