Rescue Me fans: season 5 info.

The bad news is that season 5 won't be airing until 2009. The good news is that when they do come back next year it will be 22 episodes and hopefully the time in between seasons 4 and 5 have really allowed Leary and Tolan to fix up some of the bad writing in season 4.

Anyways... I came across an interesting article with some pretty cool news about the minisodes and season 5.

http://www.tvsquad.com/2008/06/19/de...x-and-writing/

Quote:
Denis Leary and Peter Tolan are busy men. As the two executive producers behind FX's phenomenal drama Rescue Me, the two have had their plate full ever since the WGA strike ended. For those that haven't heard, Rescue Me was renewed for a network-length 22 episode season scheduled to air in spring 2009. I had the opportunity to sit in on a conference call with Leary and Tolan earlier today and both pointed out that this is an entirely different animal since they're used to producing 13 episode seasons. Leary was quick to make a sports analogy: they pretty much have been working on season five since last year's football season and they probably won't wrap until next year's basketball playoffs. He also made an alcohol analogy: it's like they're in TV rehab. Coming from the guy who plays Tommy Gavin, I'd say that's fairly appropriate.

Of course, the entire point of the call was to discuss the upcoming string of Rescue Me minisodes set to premiere on FX this coming Tuesday, June 24th. So here's what I can tell you about them now:

I've seen the first three, and much like the comedy short they produced a few years ago, they are funny as hell. However, Leary made it clear that won't necessarily be the case for all for all of them. He said that while black humor is organic to any firehouse, that's not all there is to it. So we should expect some of the new shorts to have a more serious tone.

If you miss the episodes on TV, don't worry - they'll be available on Crackle.com the day after they air.

That being said, there will be some tie-in to past events (the second minisode deals briefly with Tommy's drinking issues) and even though all ten haven't been shot yet (they're working on them in between season five episodes as the schedule allows), Leary and Tolan said to not rule out the possibility that one of them may set up something for season five.

FX President John Landgraf came up with the idea of the minisodes since the show would have been off the air for almost a year and a half.

And... that's pretty much all there is to say about the minisodes. Myself and everyone else on the call figured that out fast though as questions quickly shifted to the new season.

Here are the highlights, but be warned as some of it may be a little spoiler-ish:

All of season five's 22 episodes will air uninterrupted. I suppose that could change between now and 2009, but for now, it looks like it'll just be billed as season five and not seasons five & six.

Leary and Tolan both said that the first six episodes of the new season are hands down some of the best written stuff the show has ever had and that they're definitely worth the wait. Leary also said that they seem to write better whenever the Red Sox are playing well. Call me crazy then, but I hope that isn't true because the whole American League East has been sort of mediocre so far this season...

The season five premiere has the most amazing fire scene they've done to date.

Charles Durning will be back! Tommy's dad is indeed dead, but they're planning a scene (ala The Iceman Cometh) in which Tommy will be visited at a bar by all of his ghosts. That leaves the window open for Jerry too. Leary did say that he and Jack McGee had patched things up.

Regarding Tommy's dad's passing, I asked about Timo and Rosemary - the lost Gavin siblings. Are they ever gonna come back? Leary responded that it's a big Irish family and Tolan said that they just ended up focusing instead on Maggie and Johnny. Which I suppose makes sense. There are a lot of characters on the show and you've can't stick with them all unfortunately.

Leary and Tolan said they do have plans for how the series will end. They even went as far as saying they were committed to it and they were fairly certain that something like it hadn't been done before. Some characters will get happy endings. Tolan said they can't be mean forever.

No worries about Tatum O'Neal either. She'll be featured in plenty of episodes in the new season.

As far as guest stars, they confirmed that Karina Lombard (The L Word) would play a French journalist writing a book on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. I'm sure that'll go over well with Tommy.

There is one other guest star they wouldn't name. Tolan did say this: he's hoping the role will garner an Emmy nod for actor (actress?) in a guest role. Sounds like a good one then.

That's all I got! Read the season five stuff slowly though because we won't know if any of it comes true until around this time next year. Also, check back here on Tuesday nights. I'll be reviewing the minisodes all summer long.

Based on season 4, an expanded fifth season doesn't seem wise.
While I am excited for more Rescue Me, I'll have to share Molt's hesitance to embrace an expanded season. It's becoming painfully obvious, especially in network television, that brevity is the soul of awesome. Lost benefitted from it. BSG is floundering a bit, but it has an end date. The HBO series work best in 13 episodes. But in Rescue Me's case, even the shortened season 4 was awash in plots that went nowhere and bad writing.

I hope Leary and Tolan can pull it together. But we'll wait until after the All Star Break, that's when the BoSox start sucking.

Word. I could let some of the shitty story points go but what they did to Jerry really fucks with me to this day.
The bit about McGee coming back as a ghost isn't...yeah. Goddammit, Tolan and Leary.
Yeah, I love the show so much, but there were a few things wrong with Season 4.

That said, Season 4 is still miles beyond most shows on television, but I hope that Season 5 does a lot more.

Although I HATE BOSTON SPORTS.
Not to climb the hate bandwagon, but Season 4 left much to be desired. It seemed like a great big time waste. Other than his dad dying what really happened to further anyone's storyline?

Complete agreement with this. This type of show works better with shorter runs.

I don't know why more cable shows are doing this. Well I do, more episodes means more money for everyone on the show. That makes sense. But from a creative standpoint it seems like the best dramas are the ones who keep it around 13 or so episodes per season. You start hovering at 20 and everything just seems to drag.

I personally thought this show hit its zenith with the second season, and has been slowly going down ever since, with S4 being pretty terrible. This show has gone from being a good ensemble drama into The Adventures of Denis Leary, Playboy Fire-Fighting Superman.

I have all 4 seasons on DVD now and watching season 4 on DVD without any breaks I have to say that it was a lot better than I remembered it last year. Sure, it was nowhere near as good as it was from seasons 1-3 but not as awful as some people make it out to be. I think it started off strong, got weak in the middle and ended strong. I really liked the last few episodes and especially the season 4 season finale.

The minisodes start this Tuesday. Can't wait.
I'm really excited for S5, but yeah, I was disappointed with S4 as well. I just got done with the DVD and will agree with Upgrayedd. The middle is absolutely mediocre, and entirely forgettable.

The first "minisode" (can't even call it that really since it wasn't even 5 minutes) was pretty funny and reminded me why I liked the show. The show needs more scenes like that.

Then I read a new article which has an interesting quote by Peter Tolan...

Quote:
The minisodes don't connect to the new season, but they do answer fan calls for more comedy. "They said, 'We miss the guys talking in the kitchen about sex, their lives, and foolishness in the (fire) house,' " Tolan says.

"One involves a flashback that explains something that goes all the way back to the beginning of the series, and another is a dream sequence tied into Tommy's psyche," Leary says of his character, Tommy Gavin. "It starts out as a really sexy dream and ends up as a nightmare."

Tolan hopes they help erase a subpar fourth season: "The story choices we made took us away from our main guys. It was sort of treading water."
I hope he's right.

Here's the link...

Edit: For those who missed it here's the "minisode" from last night.

At least Tolan acknowledges that season 4 had many problems. Like I said I hope they can go back to doing more scenes like the "minisode" in season 5. It's what made the first 3 seasons so great, IMO.
I'm glad that Tolan acknowledged that too. They spent a lot of their goodwill from me with that lackluster season and the debacle with the Chief, and as a fervent defender of the show up to that point, I really, really, really want them to get their steam back, and them taking the hit from the writers' strike doesn't help their situation any as far as more casual fans are concerned.

That being said, I can't wait to check out the webisode tonight!
Tolan describes them as "treading water" last season . . . I don't think a 22-episode season order is going to lead to tighter story arcs with more sustained momentum.
The first season was so legitimately great--and such a breath of fresh air--that the following seasons all seemed flat. Still, as others said, even last year was above average TV. I hope they finish strong.
That was a great minisode. Rekindled that fun banter that wasn't there in season 4.

I think the writers strike will actually be what turned out to help them. They had/have more time to come up with better ideas and if Tolan can admit that they made some mistakes in season 4 then hopefully they can fix them in season 5.

While I loved season 1 I have to say I liked season 3 the most. Season 1 was good, season 2 was good when it came to drama but the storyline with his son kind of took the fun away from the show. I think season 3 has the absolute best mix of comedy and drama and was my favorite so far.

Thanks for the updates, 'grayedd. I just realized that you're the same Upgrayedd that posts on the Rescue Me messageboards, where I lurk occasionally. Elementary, Watson, etc.

I only hope that the time between seasons actually allows them to come up with a nice series ender.

These mini-sodes have been sucking a Tijuana donkey.

I made him drink dip spit, ha-ha, no! Bad Rescue Me, BAD!!!

There's another minisode tonight... last weeks was hilarious.

Also... this is awesome news...

Anyway, sources confirm to me exclusively that Michael J. Fox is nearing a deal to join the cast of Rescue Me for a multi-episode arc. He’ll play a love interest for Denis Leary’s on-screen ex, Janet (Andrea Roth).
That would be unreal. I hope it works out.
Yeah, that would be pretty cool.

Question: Has it been confirmed that this is the last season? It sounds like it from the other comments, but I find myself strangly out of the loop.

Pretty funny tonight. I really hope that they include scenes like these in the episodes of Rescue Me season 5.

I'm not sure if season 5 will be the last season. Denis Leary and Peter Tolan have said they know pretty much exactly how they want to end it but they say that when they get the entire cast back and start filming they could continue this for a long time.

Everything that I've heard has been that this is not the final season.

I'm a week late for the dream minisode but I have to say it was pretty damn funny. More importantly seeing Callie Thorne making out with Andrea Roth was probably the best thing I've seen on television in months. Seriously I think it's time that the show moved away from the fireman angle and moved exclusivly onto Callie Thorne and her bisexual antics.

That's why I wonder what they would do on HBO, Showtime or Skinemax.

Great minisode last night. Kind of sad at the end...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z5QL3J7YR4

Oh and it's now official...

Quote:
Michael J. Fox will return to series TV with a four-episode guest role on FX's "Rescue Me."

On "Rescue Me," which stars Denis Leary as troubled firefighter Tommy Gavin, Fox will play a "very funny, very original character," said John Landgraf, president and general manager of FX Networks.

Fox's character, who uses a wheelchair, is the new boyfriend of Tommy's estranged wife Janet (Andrea Roth) and will be introduced in the fifth-season premiere in spring 2009. The episode's air date was not announced.

Fox, 47, a friend of Leary's, was "really excited about the part," Landgraf said.

I couldn't believe it at the end. I think that minisode might have been better than all of season 4 combined.

You're right. While I don't think season 4 sucked as much as a lot of people think I do think it was definitely missing something that seasons 1-3 had. I think that these minisodes are great because of the comedy and it's what season 4 was missing. I mean there were some funny parts in season 4 like Sean burning down Mike's house and the Gavin family AA meetings but it was missing the guys hanging around the fire house and just talking like this. I do think that minisode last night was better than all of season 4 combined and so was the one a couple weeks ago called "Fantasy" with Sheila and Janet kissing.
I do think Season 4 has some great moments, especially the Gavin AA meetings.

Also, I love the fact that Robert John Blake and Adam Ferrara have almost become series regulars and I hope that continues in Season 5.

I'm bumping this up because I found out some new info. Season 5 will start on March 3, according to someone on the official Rescue Me forum who hasn't been wrong yet. The crew will be getting a new member this season (Damien?), Michael J. Fox is set to play Janet's new boyfriend.

Oh yeah and I'm probably meeting Denis Leary this friday here in Chicago. He has a new book out and will be signing at Borders.
Crazy. Damien = MJF's character, or someone else?

Also, have fun at the book signing. I already know someone pissed off at him about the bit that he wrote about autism.

Thanks for the updates!

Ya know after the horrible last season and the huge wait between seasons I really don't care about this show anymore and I won't be watching.

Damien is the name of Jimmy and Sheila's son, isn't it?

So yeah I got to meet him last night. It was freaking crowded... probably a good 500 or more total. I went with my friend and his girlfriend and kids and Denis signed our books and took pictures with us. I also brought my Rescue Me guide book and he signed that no problem along with his new book. It was a real cool experience.

Wow I didn't hate or think season 4 sucked like most of you do. There was certainly a tonal shift from the previous seasons, everyone just seemed tired of life, and I thought this was kinda cool, instead of the same old hyperenergetic wise cracking spiel, don't get me wrong I love the rapid fire banter of the previous seasons, but they are a bunch of uneducated poorly paid fire men, I expect life to suck for them at some point, I expect to see their unhappiness. My main criticism of the season was the direction away from the other firefighters lives, and a larger focus on Tommy Gavin. Season 4 to me atleast helped sooth one of the problems I precieved in the show, the incessant hero warship bestowed on Leary, not just by the characters, but also by the writers.

Also much of the cast became fat in season 4, maybe you guys just hate fatsos.
