Olympics 2008

Because I don't know what happened to the old Olympics weird logo thread...

Probably the most exciting this I watched this weekend in High Definition. Diving and gymnastics trials.

but Track & Field trials are this weekend.

I think replays are being shown on Universal HD too.

I'm with ya.

I think we got a good Womens diver and a good Womens gymnast. However like one of the announcers said, our athletes need to focus on consistency.

Also, I'll be catching the live streams online when the Olympics start up.

If you saw the gymnastics competition this weekend, then you saw this.

SADness

I keep forgetting this is coming. Whenever I see a commercial for it, I'm surprised. I only watch the opening/closing ceremonies anyway. When Ali lit the cauldron that one year, I lost it crying.

I'm always a sucker for seeing the teams walk into the stadium during the opening ceremonies.

Likewise.

That'd be the Atlanta Games in 1996. I basically plunked my ass in front of a TV for damn near everything that year. The night of the bombing, I watched coverage til the sun came up...

Since then, I've restricted my watching to the sports that I follow. Or should I say, what NBC deems worthy of televising, as their coverage is far less wide ranging than, say, CBC's. The difference between American and Canadian coverage was startling, to say the least, when I was in Buffalo attending college during the 1998 and 2000 Olympics.

Sorry, I've bitched about that every Olympiad since, and with the massive time difference this time around, I'm sure it'll continue. Apologies, carry on.

Especially the countries with like one or two dudes, followed by the 1,000-member USA right behind them.

Yeah, they kept on going back and filming her after that incident.

I'm pretty sure they had a designated camera man to follow her every move.

The US basketball team will probably choke again. They need to select more defensive specialists. No Celtics were picked either. : /
post #10 of 597
How are the soccer teams chosen? I thought I had heard we were allowed 3 designated "veteran pros" to play alongside the amateurs, but can't seem to find a roster for each country.

You're correct. I assume that the European countries are going to make the announcements after the Euro ends. Looks like the deadline is the end of July, or thereabouts.
I heard that Michael Phelps could become the most decorated Olympic athlete ever. I usually just watch the swimming, b-ball, and maybe soccer.
I will watch men's basketball, men's soccer, women's beach volleyball, and sit uncomfortably while my wife watches women's gymnastics. That is all.
So what's the violent tragedy going to be this year? Another bombing? Peaceful protest gone wrong? Perhaps a natural disaster? It's China(town), something has to go wrong. I'll be cringing for the next couple weeks if anyone needs me.
The city of my residence (Minot, ND) has two people trying out for swimming (Matt Lowe and Dagny Knutson), but outside of that I have zero interest. If one of them makes it I'll watch their event.

What's really interesting about this year is the use of these special swimming suits to cut down on the time. It amazes how far technology has gotten since the days of Mark Spitz winning all those medals with a mustache no less.

I watch pretty much all of it except for basketball. Something I discovered during the last games: women's fencing is sexy as hell.

Women in puffy full-body suits, pads, and face-obscuring masks? To each is own, I guess. I'll stick with beach volleyball. While it's sexist as hell of me to do this, a simple Google image search of the two terms tells the story:

Women's Fencing.

Women's Beach Volleyball.

And just like that, women's fencing is added to my list.
Bump!!

I find myself going from not interested to checking out the schedules for individual events.
So, what's the count? Two beaten reporters thus far and a banned gold medalist?
It just won't be the same without Jim McKay.

I've been watching the Olympics since 1964 as a wee lad, and not having the Official Voice of the Olympic Coverage around will make me more than a little sad.
For once, I'm kind of glad the Games are almost a day ahead of airing in the U.S. If any shit goes down during the Ceremonies, I don't really want to see it happen live.
The fact that we'll be able to read/see the results before the events are shown here in the USA will limit my viewing, unfortunately.

Except for a few events, I actually prefer the Winter Olympics.
Anyone else watching the opening?
It's gorgeous.
They aren't showing it here until tonight.. and of course I have to work. Jerks.
Really? No sports network broadcasts it live? Or the games?

Even we have full time coverage.
We're watching the opining live in my office, but only because we're using Canadian satellite service. Can't believe NBC isn't broadcasting live when the ceremony started at 8:00am eastern standard time.
They are saving it for the primetime blowout at 7:30 EST (I believe). Not nice. :-(
post #31 of 597
You can watch online.

Coverage you likely won't hear on NBC:

(from the CBC broadcast)
Ron MacLean: "The flag bearer for the United Arab Emirates is tae kwon do athlete Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who, according to Forbes Magazine is 17th on the list of the 20 hottest young royals."

Peter Mansbridge: "..."

MacLean: "I just report the news, Peter."

Maybe you can, but I can't. I surfed that site for 10 minutes looking for a video link and could not find it anywhere.
Anyone else get a real 1936 Berlin vibe from these Olympics? Except, of course, for the asbestos factory level of air quality?
See the watch now section? Click there. It will open up a video browser.

BTW, anything that is going to be broadcast on TV will not be available online until after it's shown on TV.

There's some other streaming sites from local broadcasts in that area, but I'm at work and haven't verified them. I'll post links when I can find some that work.
Here's a video feed link. It might work for others.

BTW: A football game is starting soon. (CIV vs ARG)

The soccer match between Argentina and Ivory Cost was yesterday, Spoiler: Argentina wins 2-1.

Unless you are referring to woman's soccer?
Yeah. These are Day 0 videos. On the NBC website, if it was or is going to be broadcasted, it will end up as a video feed on their website.

Only events that aren't going to be shown on TV will be streamed live on their website.
I was reading the story about the American boxer, Gary Russell, Jr., who collapsed out of dehydration in a failed attempt to make his weight, and I was admittedly filled with mirth to learn that he has four brothers... all called Gary.
Goddamn, the George Foreman method is still out there.
Full NBC olympic listings here.
http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_on...gs/online.html

When a live feed is available you just click on the link.
Do the live feeds also include Bob Costas not shutting THE FUCK UP?

I mean, personally I could listen to that asshole prattle on from his crib notes all fuckin summer. I'm just trying to be considerate and think of those few millions of intelligent audience members who don't need to be wet-nursed through every god damned second.
Thankfully, they are raw feeds. So, no BS commentary. Watching the horse events right now, it is quite relaxing, not having a commentary track.
Attention to detail is important to the Chinese - even when they are cooking Big Macs! Christ these guys suck.

Ceremony is awe inspiring in the sheer human mass it represents. I particularly liked the massive canoe display. Bring on Dirk and zee Germans!
What's up with all the Mexican music, are they playing it every time a country from the Americas shows up???
The buddy I was watching it with was wondering why bagpipes kept playing.

That was phenomenal. I hate heights, so it was an uncomfortable watch at the end there. Too bad NBC couldn't show it live. Seriously, what's the harm in broadcasting the thing twice?

Should have been a live feed at 8am (I know I looked for it this morning), then a replay at 8pm for everyone else. I bet that's what the CBC did. Then again, the CBC didn't spend a couple billion for the rights...
I hate the Olympics for their utter boredom factor. But I'll be damned if that wasn't the best opening ceremony ever. That was fantastic. Kudos to the Chinese for that, that was fantastic.

I was partial to the archer in 1992 and Ali in 1996. Not anymore.
